May 21, 2017 + Sixth Sunday of Easter Page Three
THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD In the Diocese of Arlington, the observance
of the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord has been transferred to next Sunday, May 28.
Therefore, Thursday, May 25 is not a Holy Day of Obligation; Mass celebrated on Thursday
is that of an Easter weekday. THANK YOU TO GRADUATING ALTAR SERVERS Our altar servers for the 10 a.m. Mass today are among the 14 young men graduating from high school and, therefore, leaving us as servers. Many have assisted at Mass at St. Mary since the 5th grade! My sincere thanks to them (and their supportive parents) for serving the parish, helping make the Mass and other liturgies move smoothly and reverently. We wish them well and pray for them in whatever the future brings. God bless!
MAY PROCESSION My thanks, too, to everyone who helped make our annual May Procession such a delight at last Sunday’s 11:30 a.m. Mass – especially the children dressed in their First Holy Communion finery! What a beautiful way to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron of our parish.
BISHOP’S LENTEN APPEAL Once again, I am amazed at the generosity of Saint Mary’s parishioners in exceeding our assigned BLA goal, which is, as our president likes to say, “HUGE”! Thank you to all who participated and who will participate in the coming weeks. So much good is funded by this appeal that you all share in – the education of our future priests; the care for those less fortunate than we – shelter, food and counseling services; education and programs for our young people; land for new parishes; and many more projects that help the light of Christ to shine more brightly. May God reward and bless you!
ORDINATION ANNIVERSARIES I celebrated my 26th anniversary of priesthood on May 18, happily on retreat with my brother priests at Loyola on the Potomac in Faulkner, Maryland. Fathers Barnes and Andrew have their anniversaries in June…late bloomers! I am so grateful to God for choosing me to be a priest, unworthy as I am, and grateful for the grace to respond to His call at the right moment. I am blessed to serve in this faith-filled Diocese of Arlington and so proud to lead this wonderful parish of Saint Mary…your generosity, kindness and reverence is a blessing to me. This summer, beginning June 12, we welcome seminarian Phillip Briggs. As part of his seminary formation, he will live with the priests in the rectory and experience priestly and parish life from the “inside”. He is from a large family in Front Royal and a graduate of Christendom College. He worked for a couple of years in the Virginia wine business, so it should be a fun summer! Let us pray that many men of our diocese, of our parish and from our families, may respond with joy and generosity to God’s call to serve the Church as a priest. Oremus pro invicem!

Living Faith A Reflection for Sunday, May 21
For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil. 1 Peter 3:17
The old line says, “If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively.
Why me? I did everything right! Here’s the thing — God has a different and better plan in store for you.
WORSHIP, PRAYER & FELLOWSHIP EUCHARISTIC APOSTLES OF THE DIVINE MERCY
Sooner would heaven and earth turn into nothingness than would My mercy not embrace a trusting soul.
(Diary of St. Faustina, 1777) An apostolate of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception under the patronage of Our Lady of Guadalupe, uses a small group or cenacle format to experience our Catholic Faith. The purpose is to spread the truth of the Real Presence in the Eucharist and live the Divine Mercy message based on a deeper trust in God, a greater ability to forgive and be merciful to others. St. Mary’s Cenacle meets the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 10 a.m. in the Fr. Rankin House (314 Duke Street). Contact Lynne or Harry Dolton, 703.960.0592 or hldolton@aol.com.
Every third weekend of the month, join us for wine and cheese after the 5 p.m. Masses on Saturday and Sunday at the Fr. Rankin House patio (314 Duke Street).

the National Shrine. Through your participation in this project you become part of the fabric of Mary’s Shrine. Donate using special envelopes at the back of our church, via Faith Direct or go to www.trinitydome.org.
