SUNDAY MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
July 21, 2019
From the Pastor’s desk. . .
The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man
availeth much.
(James 5:16B)
I have written this week with the Lord’s help about The Power of Prayer. The scripture text for this article comes from the book of James. This book is one of the General Epistles. These Epistles are not addressed to any particular church, but to believers in general. Each Epistle bears the name of its author. There are seven General Epistles: James, I Peter, II Peter, I John, II John, III John, and Jude. This book is a very Jewish book; and was written about AD 45 to the Christian Jews scattered abroad by the dispersion from the city of Jerusalem. (Acts 8:1) (James 1:1). The purpose for writing the book of James was to comfort Jewish Christians who were passing through severe trials; to correct disorders in their assemblies; and to combat a tendency to separate faith from works. The theme of this book is practical Christianity manifesting itself in good works, contrasted with mere profession of faith. (James 1: 22) says = But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. (James 2:17) says = Even so
faith, if it hath not works is dead, being alone.
For this Pastor’s Desk, we want to focus our attention upon our scripture text found in James 5:16-18 which says = Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit. This scripture is some of the teachings of James about prayer. He teaches about The Power of Prayer and its effect on our lives. James uses the Prophet Elijah (Elias) as an example to all of “us,” of how the effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. The scriptural background for (James 5:17, 18) is found in (I Kings 17:1) which says = And Elijah the Tishbite, who was of the inhabitants of Gilead, said unto Ahab, As the LORD God of Israel liveth, before whom I stand, there shall not be dew nor rain these years, but according to my word. God used Elijah, the Prophet to inform the wicked King of Samaria that God was going to stop the rain
and dew on the land of Samaria because of his wickedness, and by the authority of God, there would be no dew or rain for three and one half years. James said in (James 5:17) that Elias (Elijah) was not any different from all of us. He was a man subject to like passions as we are, but he prayed earnestly that it might not rain. The word, earnestly, means = with a serious state of mind. The Power of Prayer worked; God shut off the water supply of dew and rain upon Samaria for three years and six months. (I Kings 18:1) says = And it came to pass after many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. And he (Elijah) prayed again, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit (James 5:18) The Power of Prayer worked again; God opened the water supply of dew and rain upon Samaria, and the earth brought forth her fruit. Read: (I Kings 18: 41-46) Notice especially (I Kings 18:41) which says = And Elijah said unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of abundance of rain; And (I Kings 18:45) which says = And it came to pass in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode, and went to Jezreel. When we read these wonderful scriptures about The Power of Prayer, we get excited about them, but James is teaching us that the effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man like Elijah availeth much. First of all, he prayed an effectual prayer. When he went to God in prayer, he prayed a prayer that was able to produce a desired effect. Elijah only prayed one prayer: Lord shut up the heavens, don’t let dew or rain come upon Samaria; Lord verify my word which I have spoken to wicked Ahab. Show him that I am your servant and speak and act on your behalf. Then Elijah prayed a fervent prayer. When he went to God in prayer this time, he was fervent. His prayer was very hot, and glowing, and marked by a great intense of feeling. Lord, I want you to confirm the word which thou hast spoken to me. Please Lord, answer my prayer. Don’t let my prayers fall to the ground, but uphold them with thy right hand of power. Bring the words which were spoken to wicked Ahab to pass. I am your servant and I need your help! The effectual, fervent prayer of a righteous man like Elijah availeth much. The word, availeth, means = advantage toward
attainment of a goal or purpose. God heard Elijah’s prayers and he will hear ours too! Zion Temple First Pentecostal Church and all those who read this article, don’t stop praying: Use the weapon of prayer; and put faith with your prayers. The Power of Prayer will change things in our lives! Let your prayers be effectual and fervent. Keep praying and watch God change
things!
