Ralph Waldo Emerson Dunham Sr.

Gabriel Duvall shared the name ofhis second cousin — BarackObama’s direct ancestor — andspent more than six decades inpublic life, including serving inCongress. He was a close friend ofThomas Jefferson, but it wasPresident James Madison whotapped him to served on the U.S.Supreme Court in 1811. He wasalso a major slave owner, owningas many as 37 slaves at one point.

Obama’s great-great-great-grandfather, Jacob MackeyDunham was a farmer inTipton County, Ind., in the1870s. He later ownedrestaurants and a confec-tionary in the OklahomaTerritory, where he died in1907, according to researchby David Lee Dunham.

Pro-slavery “bushwackers”burned their home, killedtheir son and nearly blind-ed their infant daughterwith fiery coals.

He was named for one of America’sgreatest poets, but Barack Obama’sgreat-grandfather Ralph WaldoEmerson Dunham never cared forhis name. “It embarrassed him,”said daughter Virginia Goeldner. Dunham was an outdoorsman but hehad a tender side. “He told meonce: ‘If a dad has to tell their kidswhether he loves them or not, he’snot doing his job right,’” Goeldnersaid.“He said, ‘If you love your kids, they feel it.’ ”

Sarah Obama wasjust 16 when shemarried Obama’sgrandfather. She’sreally his step-grandmother, butBarack Obamacalls her“Granny.”
