Surrealism
CMYK vs RGB
Prin5ng Process
• Be sure work is being done in CMYK, if you already know which printer you are going to be using you can ask them what color seCng they prefer or suggest.
• Once the work is finished you will need to save a hi-‐res PDF
• Take the pdf to the printer and have them print you a proof, if they don’t know what that means, tell them you just want to print to check the colors
Prin5ng Process cont’d
• You will most likely have to pay for the proof, but it should be done on cheaper paper, and therefore be cheaper
• Be sure they are prin5ng from the same printer the final image will be printed from
• Bring the comp to class. • Check for consistency of light, shadow, color, etc.
Print Process
• Correct any issues that are seen with the image by yourself, the class, or me.
• Print a new proof, check for inconsistencies at the store. If you are happy, Print your final.
Image Manipula5on
• Possibly the best known aspect of digital art and photoshop is the ability to manipulate “normal” images to create new mind blowing images
• IM can refer to anything as simple as fixing an old photograph or crea5ng a whole new world
• The secret to great IM is making sure that your images are consistent in light, color, value, resolu5on, grain, etc.
• The best way to get consistency, is to take your own images.
Consistency
Image Manipula5on
• Piecing images together in the best possible way, will take a lot of 5me and work to make them look correct.
• Trying to take shortcuts in order to get done faster never helps your work.
• You always want to strive for a realis5c sense of light and space, even if the subject is as far from real as you can get.

Assignment
• A.) Explore surrealism and how to use dreams and fantasy as sources of ideas for images
• B.) Demonstrate an understanding of surrealism through an artwork that shows elements of surrealism
• C.)Demonstrate skill in the use of digital media to create an artwork that u5lizes cameras and image edi5ng soVware.
Requirements
• 1. Image must be in Print resolu5on
• 2. Must show at least 1 par5al person
• 3. Must look as realis5c as possible, while s5ll be surrealist and stylis5c
Process
• Step1-‐ Research surrealist ar5sts, digital and tradi5onal. Deviant art and Tumblr are a great place to find digital surrealists. Print 5 examples. Look at the various ways you can create surrealism, and choose one category (flight, invisibility, destruc5on, etc) for yourself. Using that category, list 10 different ideas that you think you’d be able to create. Circle the three ideas you like the best. Discuss with Instructor
Process
• Step2-‐ Draw 3-‐5 thumbnails of your ideas.
• Step3-‐ Get any models or props you may need. Begin shoo5ng, be sure images are at the highest possible resolu5on
• Get images approved before moving on to next step.
Process
• Step3-‐ Open the images in photoshop and check for inconsistencies or problems in the image. If you need to reshoot, do so right away. Use photoshop to manipulate the images to create the surrealist idea you have. You may use adjustments and filters as well if it enhances your theme. Save a print version (PDF) and a web version. Upload the web version to blackboard for a grade. Print a color comp.
Tips -‐Crea5ng for print will entail using a different color mode-‐ CMYK -‐Comps (or digital draVs) are not the final step, they are the rough draV before the final step -‐Always check the file size of images before beginning any work -‐When shoo5ng for surrealism it’s best to use a tripod, and shoot the landscape without any props or people first. -‐Always clean the camera lens before you work. -‐Shoo5ng the various images on the same day in the same light will save you a lot of hassle later.
