How to divide syllables (rule 1)

If there is a short vowel sound, it should be a closed syllable

Closed syllables end in consonants

Divide the word after the consonant following a short vowel sound

If there is a long vowel sound, it should be an open syllable

Open syllables end in vowels, or are made of lonely vowels
