• A symbol is something that is concrete (something that you can touch) that stands for something that is abstract (a feeling, an idea, or an emotion).

Examples (almost everywhere you look!)

• A dove implies a connection to peace.

• Heart = love

• White = purity or goodness

• American flag = American freedom and democracy

What can symbols be? • The symbols themselves can be

objects, actions, and even the characters themselves become symbols – standing for good or evil, for instance.

• Regardless of the symbol and whether it is abstract or literal, symbolism adds another dimension to writing.
