ETIQUETTE TIP OF THE WEEK:
Lighting Candles
Lighting candles is an important part of Orthodox worship. We light
them as we pray, making an offering to accompany our prayers.
Orthodox typically light candles when coming into the church—and
that is usually the best time to light them, but there are times when
candles should not be lit. It is not proper to light candles during the
Epistle or Gospel readings, during the Little or Great Entrances, the
sermon, or the Anaphora. If you find yourself arriving to church
after the service has begun, first go back and review the Etiquette
Tip of the Week from September 9, 2018 about arriving to services
on time, and then make sure that none of these parts of the service
are going on before lighting your candles.

Our November GWB project will be for the Mat-Su Food Bank. Last
week we collected $557 for the food bank. Thank you for your
generosity. Please make donations of non-perishable food items in the
green bin in the Fellowship Hall. Last year we collected 300 pounds of
food. December projects will focus on our “Adopt-a-family” project
through the Wasilla Homeless Committee.
THE GOSPEL (CONTINUTED) Which of these three, do you think, proved neighbor to the man who fell
among the robbers?” The lawyer said, “The one who showed mercy on him.”
And Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”

A GOOD WORD “Do everything you can to take some wisdom for your soul from
what you read, and emulate it.” -- Metropolitan JOSEPH
“If a man has on one side of him fire, and on the other side a vessel
with water, then if he starts burning from the fire, he takes water
from the vessel and extinguishes the fire. Like to this are the evil
thoughts, suggested by the enemy of our salvation, which like a
spark can enkindle sinful desires within a man. It is necessary to put
out these sparks with the water, which is prayer and the yearning of
the soul for God.” -- Abba Poemen
“If man suppresses his stomach and his tongue, then he will be able
to rule over himself.” -– St. Poemen
“We ate that which was given to us. No one ever said, ‘give me
something else,’ or ‘I do not want that.’ In this way, we spent our
entire life in silence and peace.” -- Abba Poemen
“The more I bow before the icon of Christ, or the Theotokos or of
any patron saint, it means that I am ready to humble myself and
liberate myself and free myself from all evil actions, thoughts and
behaviors.” -- His Eminence, Metropolitan JOSEPH

THE EPISTLE (For St. Menas)
The Lord will give strength to His people. Ascribe to the Lord, O children of
God, ascribe to the Lord glory and honor.
The Reading from the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
(4:6-15)
Brethren, it is the God Who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,”
Who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory
of God in the face of Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to
show that the transcendent power belongs to God and not to us. We are
afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair;
persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always
carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be
manifested in our bodies. While we live we are always being given up to
death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our
mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since we have the
same spirit of faith as he had who wrote, “I believed, and so I spoke,” we too
believe, and so we speak, knowing that He Who raised the Lord Jesus will
raise us also with Jesus and bring us with you into His presence. For it is all
for your sake, so that as grace extends to more and more people it may
increase thanksgiving, to the glory of God.
THE GOSPEL (For the Eighth Sunday of Luke)
The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. Luke. (10:25-37)
At that time, a lawyer stood up to put Jesus to the test, saying, “Teacher, what
shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus said to him, “What is written in the
Law? How do you read?” And the lawyer answered, “You shall love the Lord
your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength,
and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” And Jesus said to
him, “You have answered right; do this, and you will live.” But the lawyer,
desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Jesus
replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among
robbers, who stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead.
Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him he
passed by on the other side. So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place
and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he journeyed,
came to where he was; and when he saw him, he had compassion, and went to
him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; then he set him on his
own beast and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And the next day
he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of
him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’

Greetings in Christ to all Parishioners and Friends of Saint Herman Antiochian Orthodox
Church.
The Parish Council would like to update all the members and friends of Saint Herman
Antiochian Orthodox Church in Wasilla on the exciting developments happening at our church.
We are growing! We are so thankful to God that we are growing. Not only are we growing but
Metropolitan JOSEPH observed during his recent visit in May that our parish is full of joy. He
encouraged us to keep our joyful mind and hearts as we grow—to never lose the joy, no matter
how big a parish we become.
Part of the joy that we experience involves our charitable giving through our Good Works
Basket. In the past year we have done projects to support the Mat-Su Food Bank, Wasilla
Homeless Committee, local Orthodox Prison Ministry, Saint Nicholas Uganda Children’s Fund,
Wasilla Heartreach Center, FOCUS North America, and International Orthodox Christian
Charities. Each month we also continue to support financially both the St. John the Forerunner
Monastery in Washington and the Hogar Raphael Orphanage in Guatemala.
Our Sunday School classes for all ages held after Coffee Hour are well attended. We are using
the Parsonage basement for the children’s classes and the Fellowship Hall for classes too. This
semester the classes are bursting at the seams! If you haven’t attended these classes, please
Come and See what good is happening there.
After much discussion in the Parish Council and meetings of the whole church, we are
embarking on a fundraising venture to pay for God’s plan for a new church building. We are
unsure how this should be accomplished, so we are praying. Every Wednesday night we have a
prayer service focused solely on praying for God’s will and direction for the church building
plans. It is a short, 20 minute service that begins at 6:00 p.m. We encourage everyone to Come
and Pray with us.
We are filling our small temple with people of all ages and it is a wonderful problem to solve
with God’s guidance. If you haven’t visited for awhile, we invite you to Come and See! We
average more than 75 people on Sunday mornings, and about half are children. We are asking
everyone to pray about giving a regular gift to our building fund so we may realize our
dream of a sanctuary that safely and comfortably accommodates 150 to 200 people.
We are also planning some community events to help to raise money to build. Stay tuned for
announcements on these upcoming fun events.
We currently owe about $70,000 on our property mortgage. We would like to retire this debt as
soon as possible. We also want to simultaneously save as much money as possible in a building
fund so that we will be ready to build, buy, or renovate when God reveals His plan to us.
By the way, we now have the capability of scheduling tithes and building fund donations on our
website with PayPal. Go to www.sainthermanwasilla.org and click the “Donate Now” button on
the side. Credit cards can be charged through PayPal. It is an easy process and can be done for a
one-time donation or monthly or weekly recurring donations—whatever suits your giving
pattern.
Do you remember the story where Jesus fed the multitudes? (John 6:1-14 and Luke 9:10-17).
Jesus asked his disciples, “Where shall we buy bread, that these may eat?” Philip said it would
take 200 denarii (200 days of wages) to feed them all just a little bit. In Luke’s Gospel Christ
commands, “You give them something to eat.” He said this to test them. Well, you know the
story: One person offered all he had. Jesus took and blessed the five barley loaves and two fish.
This small amount provided by one young man fed the multitude with twelve baskets of food
leftover. Our Lord would love to bless our offerings and feed our souls even more than our
bellies! Let us give what we can, regularly give, and watch Him bless our giving of alms.
Please talk to anyone on the Parish Council or Father Matthew about ideas you might have or
any comments on this matter.
Come and See how God will bless your Giving and your Life with Joy.
See you Sunday,
Parish Council
