IamSgtLindaPonder,supervisoroftheSouthwestAreaCommand(SWAC) District Representative Unit. We are the communityliaison officers of the Austin Police Department for the southwest partofAustin.ManyofyoumayalreadyknowabouttheDistrictRepresentativeUnitandwhatourroleandjobfunctionis,howeverthere may be some that do not. The concept involves an officer assigned to an area as a liaison between the community and thepolicedepartmenttoassistthecommunityinsolvingneighborhoodproblems.TheDistrictRepresentativeiscalledupontodoamyriadofactivitieswhichinclude,butarenotlimitedto:

1.Communityinvolvementsuchas:a.NeighborhoodWatchprogramsb.NeighborhoodAssociationsc.BusinessAssociationsd.Schools,PTA’s,andcivicgroups

2.Urbandecaypreventiona.Abandonedandjunkvehiclesb. Graffitic.Abandonedresidencesandbuildings

3.CrimePrevention4.ProblemSolving

a.Habitualandhigh-demandcomplainantsb.Cityrepresentativecomplaintsc.Assistthecommunityinsolvingnon-emergencyproblemsandhelpingthecommunitybecomeself-reliant.

We are here for you to help in any way with issues that mayaffectyourqualityoflifeinyourneighborhoods.Iknowthatthisencompassesmanydifferent things,someofwhicharenotpolicerelated. In any case, give us a chance to help you.And alwaysremember, in case of an emergency when you need an officer, call 911FIRST! Someof the things thatwearedirectly responsible for inhelpingyouinyourneighborhoodsareprogramsandpresentationssuchastheNeighborhoodWatchProgram.Thisprogramhasproventobeveryeffectiveinhelpingpeopleto“police”theirneighborhoodsandmakethemsafer.Wehaveanongoingtrainingclassthatisheldthe2ndTuesofeverymonthat630pattheSouthSubstation.Also,wemaybecalledontoprepareandpresentallsortsofpresentationsfromStrangerDangerintheschoolstoupdatesofongoinginitiativestostopcrimespreesaswellasdoingsecurityassessmentsatvariousbusinessesandresidences.

TANGLEWOOD OAKS MEETINGSAllTanglewoodhomeownersarewelcome–andencouraged- toattend theTanglewoodOaksOwnersAssociationboardmeetings.These are held the 3rdThursday of each month at 7 PM in thechurch annex. This is a good forum to find out what is going on inyourneighborhood, to share any issuesyouhaveencountered,or to volunteer your time to increase the quality of life in thecommunity.
