The Welding Inspector
Is responsible for judging the acceptability of a product
according to a written specification.
The Welding Inspector can be classified as:
Code or governing agency inspector.
Purchaser´s, Customer´s, or Owner´s inspector.
Fabricator´s, manufacturer´s, or contractor´s inspector.
Architect´s or engineer´s inspector.
The Welding Inspectors Work functions can be grouped are:
Overseer.
Specialist
Combination overseer-specialist.
Qualities of the Welding Inspector
1) Physical Condition
Good Physical condition.
2) Vision
Near Vision Acuity natural or corrected vision:
• 20/40 • Jaeger J-2 at 12”• Color perception red/green, blue/yellow (Optional).
3) Professional Attitude
Success will be dependent upon the cooperation of associates in all departments..

Weld and Base Metal Discontinuities (Chapter 9).
Nondestructive Examination (Chapter 10).

Expertise in a number of different areas.
10) Inspection Experience
For AWS certification, must show evidence of having
performed the functions of a welding inspector.
Directly involved in one or more of the following:
Design
Production.
Construction.
Inspection.
Repair
Ethical Requirements for the Welding Inspector
1) Integrity
Honesty.
2) Responsibility to the Public
Preserve the health and well-being of the public.
3) Public Statements
Shall issue not statements in any public and financial interests situation.

4) Conflict of Interest
Avoid conflict of interest with the employer or client.
5) Solicitation of Employment
Shall neither pay, solicit, or offer directly ot indirectly, any bribe or commission for professional employment
6) Unauthorized Practice

Qualifications for the Welding Inspector
7) Ability to Produce and Mantain Records
Develop and mantain inspection records.
Write concise and accurate reports.
Results of inspections, welding procedures, welder
qualifications, drawing and specifications revisions, etc.
8) Knowledge of Welding Processes
Actual experience as a welder or welding operator is valuable
to a welding inspector, but is not mandatory.
Advantages and limitations of the various welding processes.

1) Welders
The welding inspector and the foreman should be in
agreement as to which welders are consider qualified to
produce satisfactory welds.
WI must indicate when parts or assemblies will be ready for
inspection.
