Primary research is research to collect original primary data. It is often

undertaken after the researcher has gained some insight into the issue

by collecting secondary data. This can be through numerous forms,

including questionnaires, direct observation and telephone interviews

    amongst others.

Secondary research (also known as desk research) involves thesummary, collation and/or synthesis of existing research rather thanprimary research, where data is collected from, for example, research subjects or experiments.

The term is widely used in medical research and in market research. The principal methodology in medical secondary research is thesystematic review, commonly using meta-analytic statisticaltechniques, although other methods of synthesis, like realist reviewsand meta-narrative reviews, have been developed in recent years.Such secondary research uses the primary research of otherstypically in the form of research publications and reports.

    Primary

    Primary sources

A primary source is an original object or document -- the raw material or first-handinformation. Primary sources include historical and legal documents, eyewitnessaccounts, results of experiments, statistical data, pieces of creative writing, and artobjects. In the natural and social sciences, primary sources are often empiricalstudies -- research where an experiment was done or a direct observation was made.

The results of empirical studies are typically found in scholarly articles or papersdelivered at conferences, so those articles and papers that present the originalresults are considered primary sources.

    Secondary sources

A secondary source is something written about a primary source. Secondarysources include comments on, interpretations of, or discussions about the original

material. You can think of secondary sources as second-hand information. If I tell yousomething, I am the primary source. If you tell someone else what I told you, you arethe secondary source. Secondary source materials can be articles in newspapers orpopular magazines, book or movie reviews, or articles found in scholarly journals thatdiscuss or evaluate someone else's original research.
