“Oat Bran Reduces Cholesterol”
= YUM!
Prove if eating oat bran reduces cholesterol in males and females
Goal
Cholesterol =
Population- People with high cholesterol everywhere.
Sample-500 patients who have high cholesterol.
Subjects
Gather 1000 patients with cholesterol equal to or above 240 Mg/Dl
Number patients 0-1000 Using a random number generator, produce
500 unique numbers The 500 numbers selected correspond to the
500 subjects receiving a treatment
Selection of Patients
Treatment A is experimental group 8 oz of Oat bran every day for a month
Treatment B is control group No oat bran
Treatments
Vs.
The 500 patients’ number will be randomly entered into a random number generator
250 numbers will be chosen They will receive Treatment A The other 250 will receive Treatment B
Treatments
Blocking will be done by separating genders before random assignment.
Cholesterol has different effects in men and women.
Blocking will allow the tester to compare reductions in cholesterol per gender.
Blocking is used

Blinding is not necessary The results are not
opinionated The results are quantitative
numbers that will be collected through medical tests done by authorized doctors.
Blinding
A placebo is not necessary There is no need to change the perception of
the subjects because the results of treatments will not be opinion based.
Giving the patients something else to eat, even though it is not oat bran, may skew the results.
Placebo
The variable that will be measured and compared is the cholesterol level of patients before and after the month of eating or not eating oat bran.
Dividing the patients into gender allows for a useful comparison to see if there is any change in cholesterol level within males or females
