Application
This Technical Data Sheet is designed to provide information of sufficient content and detail as to enable engineers, competent in structural analysis & structural steelwork design to safely design structures incorporating Mass 25. Design Codes
Mass 25 is a modular system primarily for use in temporary works and as such complies with the following codes:-
BS 449:1969 inc. 1989 Amendment - Specification for the use of Structural Steel in Buildings
BS 5975:2008 - Code of Practice for Temporary Works Procedures and the Permissible Stress Design of Falsework In addition, it was recognised during the development of Mass 25 that, with regard to material specifications in particular, the more onerous requirements of the following two codes should be adopted.
BS 5400: Part 3:2000 - Code of Practice for the Design of Steel Bridges
BS 5950: Part 1:2000 and Part 5:1998 - Structural use of Steelwork in Buildings In the production of this manual, analysis has been carried out to the latest revisions of these codes. Eurocodes
The equipment is currently being assessed to Eurocodes. Strengths relating to these codes will be published in a future revision to this document. Please refer to Mabey Hire engineering team for the latest information. Safe Working Loads
The safe working loads for members & joints given in the Technical Data Sheet are generally based on theoretical values calculated in accordance with BS 449 & BS 5975 but with additional safety factors applied to ensure a minimum factor of safety of 2.0. In many cases full scale laboratory tests have been carried out & compared to the calculated values. In all cases a minimum factor of safety of 2.0 against the onset of permanent deformation has been established. All loads are all given as characteristic allowable working loads / strengths i.e. unfactored. In addition, the stated capacities maintain the factors of safety imposed by BS 5400 & BS 5950. Product Use
For the handling and use of Mass 25, please refer to the Product Information & Use Sheet Ref. PIUM25.

2.1 Props 2.1.1 Details
The Prop unit forms the basis of the Mass 25 System. Props are fabricated from twin 4mm thick cold-formed channel sections (Material Grade: S420 MC) and are provided with 18mm diameter holes in flanges & end plates to allow connection of Mass 25 Grillage, Bracing and Auxiliary Components using M16 bolts.

2.1.2 Section Properties
2.1.3 Weighted Average for Deflection Calculations
2.1.4 Load Capacity - Axial
For general design purposes the nominal axial capacity is 250kN otherwise refer to Chart A for compressive capacity for a given effective length of the member. The values below are based on a 2.5m effective length.
2.1.5 Prop Capacity – End Details
Application of the load at the ends of the Props should be through a standard Mass 25 part such as a Grillage Beam, Hinge Unit or Baseplate. In the absence of this, care must be taken to ensure that the load is applied uniformly over the Prop End Plate. Otherwise the capacity may be limited by the local capacity of the End Plate & Channels. 2.1.6 Loading Capacity – Bending and Shear
For general design purposes, the nominal bending capacity is 20kNm otherwise refer to Chart B.
