Technology Increases Student Performance
In Public Schools!!! A student’s performance is at its highest when they are in a hybrid style learning environment according to the U.S. Department of Education meta-analysis research study. A true hybrid environment is 50% online and 50% face-to-face instruction.

THE PROBLEM
Using technology effectively in a public school environment to create a productive,
hybrid learning environment to achieve student success.
“…in spite of so much talk about
technology, and so much money spent
buying it, little has changed in student
achievement.” (Bowman)
“Perhaps attendance
records should include a
new category: present
but otherwise engaged.”
(Freedman)
Those Against Using Technology
COMPUTERS WILL REPLACE TEACHERS!
“…don't see the point in computerizing classrooms while more mundane fixes have to wait, such as repairing roofs, replacing
fire alarms or upgrading buildings for earthquake safety or disabled access.” (Alpert)
A National Bestseller Book!
...but the same has been said about anyone in their
late 40s…and the same was said about young
adults back in the 1960s…which has to make a person wonder???
Those For Using Technology
“…appropriate use of technology can
provide learning opportunities not
otherwise possible…prepare
students for the 21st century.”
(Bowman)
“Technology integration isn't about replacing what we do. It is about doing what we do better.” (Bowman)
“…technology is for: questioning,
exploration, discovery, analysis,
understanding, application, and
communication.” (Bowman)“You're bringing the world into the classroom” (Alpert)
“Teens gravitate to the computers…making them
more likely to tackle tougher work.” (Alpert)
Teachers Need to Be Onboard with the Technology
SUPPORT
REQUIRED
Technology Needs to Flow WITH Instruction; Not Against
Technology Does NOT Always Mean a Student Playing an Interactive
Game!!!
Virtual FieldTrips
Presentations
Explorationand Discovery
REMEMBER!!!
Students need to be shown how technology
can be used for things besides social
networking! Otherwise, all they will know
about technology is that it is for social
networking and nothing more!
Four Recommendations to Enhance Student Learning
and Achievement“Encourage the use of technology for questioning, exploration,
discovery, analysis, understanding, application, and communication and discourage behavior modification and activity replacement.”
“Determine the effectiveness of technology integration, and instruction in general, by the degree to which it helps students
demonstrate achievement as measured against content standards.”
“Focus professional development strategies on the teaching and learning process and the beliefs that underlie effective teaching, using
technology to help teachers enhance their professional abilities.”
“Place technology resources where learning is occurring so that they are available when needed by the learner.”
(Bowman)
