Rob LegatoVisual Effects Supervisor

The Art of Creating Awe

Remembering how it was and what actually happened

Thesis: Awe comes from the emotions and feelings of the audience and

incredible work of the artist.

Rob grabs the audience’s attention by:

Retelling a story about when he worked on the Apollo 13 movie.

Restating his thesis but in a more fluid and easier to grasp explanation.

Showing clips from work he has done

Explaining an experiment he conducted on how we perceive awe

and how it affects the way we perceive them.

Rob followed two major parts of the

TED Commandments:

IV: Thou shalt tell a story

VIII: Thou shalt remember all the while: laughter is good

Dynamism Level!

3/5Rob’s speech was very well made, yet he had a somewhat awkward approach to his audience. He did not move much, but kept his hands moving and used them to accentuate his tone.

Tips used by Rob from

Raynolds and Duartes:

Duartes Raynolds

He maintains a constant and interesting string of audio and visual examples in his presentation.

As Duartes explained is crucial to a successful presentation

As in Raynolds explanation of Zen and simplicity, Rob keeps his slides simple and with little to no words. He does not need much to explain a lot

What I learned from Rob’s presentation and delivery:

Keep you’re audience happy and laughing. Nothing is more memorable than a good time.

Use visuals and video clips to reinforce examples and grab the audience’s attention.

Comparing Ken Robinson

and Rob Legato

• both kept their audience happy and laughing

• both had a bit of sarcasm in their speech

• both gave deep explanations to their ideas

ContrastingKen Robinson

and Rob Legato

• Ken did not use any visuals, just verbal images.

• Rob has a more logic based method to his ideas. He wanted to know how people felt.

• Ken wants to inform while Rob wants to describe.

Tips for Classmates!if you are explaining something verbally, make sure to give great details to allow the audience to imagine it.
