last year as your rabbi by sharing with you the stories – traditional and per-sonal – that have influenced my think-ing, teaching, and preaching. I hope that these stories will spark conversations filled with your own significant memo-ries and life-changing wisdom.
The Jewish calendar provides us with many opportunities for this sharing. In addition to the High Holy Days, I’ve cho-sen seven (a good Jewish number) that will be “story-driven” and designed to touch the many different communities within community that make up our
“We need to look hard at the stories we create, and wrestle with them. Retell and retell them, and work with them like clay. It is in the retelling and returning that they give us their wisdom.” – Marni Gillard
One of the bookshelves in my office, and one at home, are filled with collections of stories: Jewish folktales from ancient times to the present, children’s stories from other cultures, holiday stories, Elijah stories, “Chicken Soup” for all kinds of souls… You get the idea. I have found over the years that people remember stories best because we find ourselves in the stories, and therein lies the memo-rable wisdom. Think of someone who has made a significant impact on your life. I wager you have a favorite story about him or her. And I am sure you have some anecdotes of your own that you delight in sharing. In the telling and retelling we learn the lessons again, plant-ing new seeds of learning for those lucky enough to hear.
It was a joy and privilege once again to experience the grandeur, beauty, and power of the High Holy Days with you. How wonderful to move on to Sukkot and Simchat Torah together as we round out the Tishrei month of holidays. During the year to come, in addition to our holidays, Shabbatot, classes, life cycle events, programs, and wonderful random encounters with one another, I want to mark my

Mussar and MeditationOur next Mussar and Meditation Shabbat services will be on Saturday, October 7, and Saturday, November 4, at 10:30 a.m. in the Beit Knesset. Explore the wisdom of Mussar practice as we open our hearts through
chant and silence and discuss the Jewish teachings around a particular quality. If you are seeking a soulful Shabbat, but with a little less prayer, this is for you. If you are seeking
ways to grow wiser in your everyday life, this is for you. If you aren’t so sure about chanting and silence, give it a try anyway. You might be surprised at how the combination of music and silence calms us, connects us, and creates space for new ways of thinking and acting to emerge.
Practicing Power with Rabbi LeVineJoin Rabbi LeVine for a special three-part course, “Practicing Power: How to Think Jewishly about Accomplishing Anything Together,” on Sundays, October 22 and October 29 and November 5, from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the CCJDS Makom.
What comes to mind when you hear the word “power?” Is it good, bad, or ugly? Rabbi LeVine will lead us in examining the concept of power, what Judaism has to say about it, and how to practice power more effectively.
Although attending all three sessions will allow you to make the most of the class, please feel free to join us for just one or two sessions as well. The course is free, and no RSVP is required.

Senior Rabbi Search UpdateThe co-chairs of our rabbinic search team, Jill Douglas and Mike Bandler, report that their committee has already received over 20 applications for the senior rabbi position. The commit-tee’s deadline for accepting applications is October 6. Thus far, we are very encouraged by the caliber of candidates interested in our position. The initial candidates have been screened, and about a third of them are scheduled for Skype interviews. After the round of Skype interviews, the committee will ask two or three finalists to come to Temple Isaiah for further screening and then recommend a final candidate to the temple board. If the board concurs, the congregation will be asked to vote to ratify the selection. We are looking forward to completing this process by the end of January.

WOI: Women on a MissionWhile many people are aware of the existence of Women of Isaiah, they may not know about our mission or the types of activities and philanthropy in which we are involved. One of WOI’s primary goals is to actively support Temple Isaiah by partnering with or funding a variety of special programs that enhance our Jewish community. For the past few years, we have eagerly joined forces with Cantor Korn to provide décor and food for his wonderful concerts, and we are avid financial spon-sors and donors to the temple’s yearly fundraising galas. In addi-tion to running the temple’s gift shop, WOI puts on several small fundraisers of our own and uses much of our membership dues to fund our Maagal Tzedakah grant program, which provides a healthy budget to support and provide seed money for innova-tive temple programs like the break-the-fast for Yom Kippur, the engagement committee’s temple-wide name tag program, and many other new and exciting ideas.
Assuring the future vitality of Judaism is extremely important to Women of Isaiah, and we support many of the fabulous youth programs that our clergy, religious school, and staff engage in. Last month, we partnered with Kulanu to help welcome JQuest families at a wonderful pancake breakfast to kick off the school year. Every year, WOI helps fund a variety of youth programming by providing grants to Gan Ilan, Ganeinu, the 10th grade trip to Washington DC, and the Avodah teaching assistant program.
Providing opportunities for spiritual and individual growth is another part of our mission. WOI has sponsored many learn-ing opportunities for the Isaiah commu-nity, focusing on Judaism, women-related issues, health, and spirituality. Some recent programs include “A History of Yiddish”; a tour of the new Sufism Reoriented sanctu-ary in Walnut Creek; seminars on nutrition, breast cancer, and heart health; and our sacred Hebrew chant and healing circles.
Women of Isaiah serves our Jewish com-munity as well as the community at large through social action initiatives and ongo-ing programs that meet the humanitarian needs of those around us. We are actively involved in organizing dinners for the Mountain View Emergency Family Shelter in Martinez at least two weeks a year, and we provide Chanukah gift bags and other necessities for victims of domestic vio-lence through Shalom Bayit.
WOI is not only a place to connect and add value to our Jewish Neighborhood; it is also a place where true sisterhood is treasured. We have some exciting, fun programs that will encourage our members to devel-op meaningful friendships in a more social environment. Maybe you would like to join our Mahj Monday drop-in group, monthly hikes, or our knitting circle. Perhaps you enjoy workshops on nutrition, health and wellness, or trips to museums, plays, restau-rants, or comedy clubs, or playing Bunco. There is truly something for everyone at Women of Isaiah. So check out the wonderful list of activities, programs, and accomplishments posted on our web page and email us if you are interested in getting involved with anything specific. Don’t miss out on joining the fun and bringing new friends into your life. L’Shanah Tovah!

CCIH Homework ClubThank you to everyone who donated backpacks and school supplies for the Contra Costa Interfaith Housing (CCIH) back-to-school drive. CCIH also needs our support to help in its afterschool Homework Club that runs from August through June at sites in Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Pittsburg. Currently there is a big need for more volunteers at the Concord site where (CCIH) back-to-school drive. has extended the program from one day a week to four days a week. Volunteers provide academic and mentoring support to children from extremely low-income homes in grades K-12. The commitment is one afternoon per week (Monday-Thursday) for the entire school year. Adults and high school sophomores through seniors are encouraged to apply. www.ccinterfaithhousing.org/volunteer-interest
Shelter DinnersMonday, October 23 – Friday, October 27
Twice a year Women of Isaiah puts our values in action by providing five nights of dinner for the residents of the Mountain View Family Shelter in Martinez. Shelter Dinners is a Values in Action initiative and project of Women of Isaiah, and it’s open to all temple members.
It’s easy to participate. Sign up to make or buy a dish for one of the nights or purchase some supplies, and deliver your items to the temple kitchen. (You don’t need to cook to participate.) Additional volunteers pick up the food at the temple, deliver it to the shelter, and stay to serve the meal to the residents. An experienced crew chief oversees the meal delivery and guides the servers. Families with kids 10 years or older are welcome as servers.
For more information and to volunteer, visit www.temple-isaiah.org/shelterdinners. Questions? Email Gail Walden at gcj10@comcast.net or Lynn Harrington-Golde at ptlynn@comcast.net.
Chesed Direct ServiceValues in Action advocates for providing service directly where it is most needed. We continue to support many of our exist-ing programs and are working on creating new programs. Our focus remains on food, clothing, and shelter security and on education.
We are expanding our refugee assistance program by part-nering with Lafayette Orinda Presbyterian Church and Jewish Family and Community Services of the East Bay. New welcome groups are forming, and volunteers are needed for various roles.
We also are developing new ways for all of us to help those in need. Be on the lookout for easily accessible bins on campus where you can donate clothing and nonperishable food.
Please visit the temple website for a list of volunteer oppor-tunities.
Climate Action ForumThe Tzedek Team’s Environmental Committee will present a Community Climate Action Forum on Sunday November 12, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the sanctuary with a panel of expert speakers. Wei-Tai Kwok, solar expert and current president of Sustainable Lafayette, Andrew Gunther of the Center for Ecosystem Management and Restoration, and the Rev. Canon Sally Bingham, president and founder of Interfaith Power and Light, will help you understand the science of climate change, the moral imperative for action, and how you can participate.
Join us for an afternoon that will inspire you to learn, engage, and act. Invite your friends and neighbors. The event is free and open to the community.
Winter Nights Family ShelterDecember 18 to January 2Each winter, we heed Isaiah’s call to “share your bread with the hungry, and bring the homeless poor into your house” as we host the Interfaith Council of Contra Costa County’s Winter Nights Rotating Family Shelter. We need over 400 volunteers to help cook and serve meals, shop, read stories, lead arts and crafts and music and games, wash dishes, stay overnight, plan holiday parties, host excursions, and more. All volunteers must register in advance. Watch for our sign-up form coming soon. Questions? Contact tiwinternights@gmail.com.

YOUTH AND EDUCATION
The Making of a MenschTwo years ago we changed the name of our religious school to JQuest. The new name was chosen to indicate that the educa-tional experience at Temple Isaiah should be a “Jewish quest” for kids and their families – an opportunity to explore what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. Each year the quest looks a little bit different, whether the students journey through studies of Torah, God, Israel, Jewish history, prayer, or a variety of other topics. Along the way, one of the curricular topics that weaves through every other topic is Jewish values. We want our kids and their families to learn and live by Jewish values.
When we refer to Jewish values, what do we mean? Sometimes the phrase makes us think about actions like tikkun olam (heal-ing the world) or bikkur holim (visiting the sick). Or we may think about the value of rest (i.e., observing Shabbat) or standing up for the oppressed (based on what we learn from Passover, that we were slaves in Egypt and we must help those who are “enslaved” in every generation). When we think of Jewish values, we also sometimes think of universal human values like kind-ness, compassion, honesty, humility, patience, and generosity. Put another way, we want our students to learn what it means to be a mensch (Yiddish for a good person). We teach our students Jewish values every year in JQuest, but this year we have decided to move Jewish values from the background to the foreground – to teach all our children at Temple Isaiah how to be a mensch.
On the first day of JQuest on September 10, the parents watched a 10-minute video called The Making of a Mensch by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Tiffany Shlain. (You can watch it at www.letitripple.org/films/making-of-a-mensch.) Tiffany Shlain is the creator of something called “Character Day,” and in examin-ing the types of traits that we associate with building character, she discovered that it is possible to learn about those traits in a particularly Jewish way – through Mussar. Mussar is the study and practice of middot (which can be translated as “soul traits”), and is an ancient Jewish practice that has been revived in the modern era.
Mussar has been an important part of Temple Isaiah for the last five years. We have a Mussar and Meditation service the first Shabbat of every month, we continually offer Mussar classes, and
to teaching Jewish values to our children and a Mussar for Parents class. I hope that this focus on making mensches will be a meaningful way for all our kids and parents to learn more about Jewish values and to incorporate those values into their lives in the year ahead.
Rabbi Nicki Greninger, Director of Education
there are a number of Mussar groups that meet regularly. Now, for the first time, we will be incorporating Mussar into JQuest. Each of our JQuest classes will be learn-ing about middot throughout the year in a variety of ways. Moreover, we think it’s crucial for JQuest parents to be part of the learning process. Each family with chil-dren in Grades K-6 received a copy of A Kid’s Mensch Handbook: Step by Step to a Lifetime of Jewish Values to do the activi-ties and discussions together at home as a family. We are also starting a JQuest par-ents book club focused on books related
