Message from the Director of Sport
Welcome to Term 2 Sport.
The extensive sporting program offered at Terrace will give your son the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of sports at a level commensurate with his ability.
The School is a proud member of the Great Public Schools (GPS) Association in Queensland. While not compulsory, every boy is strongly encouraged to become involved in the sporting program by representing the College in a sport and also by supporting teammates, his Year Group and the wider Terrace Sporting community.
In the following pages, you will find information that we hope will assist you in planning for the commitments of your son/s throughout Term 2 2020.
You will also find contact details for all Sport Coordinators responsible for the sports on offer for your son/s.
Cross Country, Football, Gymnastics and Tennis are the competitive activities in Term 2.
Pre-Season sports include Basketball and Rugby.
The College also offers an Athlete Development program. The Athlete Development Schedule outlines sessions, days and times.
We encourage all boys to participate in the Sport program. Due to the busy nature of the College, there may, at times, be clashes with other sports or activities. Please communicate any clashes with the relevant Sport Coordinator.
Wishing you all the best for a successful term of sport.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I PLAY MORE THAN ONE SPORT?
Balancing your time commitment to the activities offered is a challenge that students often face. Sports that are in their competition phase take priority over all other activities that may be on offer. Sport fixtures and events are often held at the same time, therefore narrowing the opportunity to participate in more than one activity per term. There are exceptions to this rule. For example, Swimming in Terms 1 and 4, which can be combined with Cricket, Rowing or Volleyball. Another activity that allows joint representation is Cross Country in Term 2. It is the athlete and the parent/caregiver’s responsibility to manage their time commitment to all activities on offer, coupled with finding the appropriate balance with the academic program.
SCHOOL TRAINING vs CLUB TRAINING
At all times the representation of the College takes priority over any club activities. Representation of the College is a privilege, not a right, of any student. The privilege of representing St Joseph’s College should never be devalued by a ‘pick and choose’ mentality.
Commitment to an activity is for the duration of the term activity. This commitment includes travelling to compete against fellow GPS member schools such as Toowoomba Grammar School and The Southport School.
WET WEATHER
Twitter is the best way to keep up to date on last minute changes – please follow @TerraceSport and the relevant Twitter accounts for your sport(s) to get all the latest information, including training cancellations due to bad weather.
SPORT LEVY
The College has a levy for all sporting activities. The funds raised through the levies are directly transferred into the respective Support Group’s funds. These funds primarily go to providing the best standard of coaching and resources available to advance the student’s level of skill, knowledge and expertise in their chosen sport. The individual sport levy is charged at the completion of each term on the school fee accounts, unless indicated otherwise.
WEEKEND SPORT SCHEDULES
The GPS sporting schedules are available on the College App under the respective sport (see over page for download details). Sport Coordinators outline the term fixtures at the commencement of each term. The weekly schedules are released by Wednesday/Thursday lunch time, with the team lists being distributed on the Friday before competition day (via email).

CROSS COUNTRY 8 GPS
OVERVIEW
The Terrace Cross Country program introduces young men to the sport of distance running. When one thinks of famous Olympic distance runners, it is clearly a sport with a rich history. On one hand, Cross Country is individual in nature. Students can pursue their own goals and feel a great sense of satisfaction with their own achievements. People can go for a run without requiring others and the solitude can be a wonderful opportunity to think. On the other hand, it is certainly a team sport where the final result is made up of contributions from all age groups. Students know that their result is important to the team, and likewise, that the results of teammates are important to them. This helps foster a sense of team spirit. Training together, travelling to races on the bus, attending the Cross Country camp and working with staff and Old Boy coaches are all great opportunities to get to know each other well, and foster a spirit of fun and comradery within the team. The program develops important life skills such as dedication, thinking and planning ahead, motivation, goal setting, healthy lifestyle and performance, all of which aid runners in their development during and after Terrace. Terrace has won the GPS Cross Country Premiership nine times - in ‘01, ‘02, ‘03, ‘04, ‘08, ‘10, ‘11, ‘13 and ’14 - and won ten Cross Country Shield seasons in a row from 2006 to 2015.

OVERVIEW
Terrace Gymnastics is a school-based gymnastics program in partnership with Brisbane Boys’ College. Gymnastics is a traditional sport that develops physical characteristics like strength, flexibility, coordination, balance and spatial awareness, and develops personal character through leadership, discipline and goalsetting. Development programs progress students from the foundations of the school PE program. Competition classes follow the National Levels Program Manual. The priority in all gymnastics programs offered via our partnership with BBC is the development of the person. Students will have fun developing their potential in the school-based programs being offered. The program operates year-round in preparation for the GPS competition season and offers participants multiple opportunities to experience competition in the sport. The GPS competition is held in Term 2, where boys compete in either Division 1 (the highest skill level), Division 2 or Division 3. GOOD TO KNOW
The 2020 season will follow the direction of the Rugby Australia and select boys in teams based on their YEAR OF BIRTH. This is the same system that operates in the club competition and ensures that boys play against their own age level. Year of school is irrelevant. AGE SELECTION is January 1 – December 31. SWIMMING 8 GPS
OVERVIEW
The Terrace Swimming program provides first class coaching to all swimmers year-round. Terrace and Rackley Swimming are looking to build on the success of previous seasons and develop future champions. In signing up for Swimming at Terrace, boys are automatically a part of the Rackley program, a swim program that is producing Queensland and Australian champions. Rackley provides a pathway to more competitions, including Brisbane Sprints, State Titles and National Age Championships, high quality coaching and the convenience of training across the road from Terrace. Note that training is split between Centenary Pool and the Terrace Pool.
Joining Swimming at Terrace is a two-step process.
1. Sign on to Terrace Swimming via the Parent Portal Signing on to Terrace Swimming via the Parent Portal includes membership to Rackley Swimming at no extra cost. If boys have already trained with Rackley and have their Rackley Swim card, they only need to sign on each term through the Parent Portal and continue with their current Rackley squad. Boys need to sign up each term they are swimming and are encouraged to swim year-round.
2. Attend an assessment/sign on day If boys are joining Rackley for the first time, they will need to attend an advertised assessment day at the Terrace Pool. Once swimmers have been assessed they will be issued with a Rackley Swimming card. The Rackley Swimming card is essential, as there is no training without the card. Training attendance is also tracked through the card. The paperwork and issuing of cards will all take place on the assessment day. If swimmers are training using the Rackley program they are expected to make themselves available for GPS selection by nominating for the Terrace Swimming Championships held in Week 2 of Term One every year.

TRAINING SCHEDULE
All GPS training sessions will be conducted in teams. The seasons will follow (as close to) the same days and times as pre-season training, ensuring minimal change for parents/caregivers and players. Each player has the opportunity to engage in 2 training sessions per week of 1.25 or 1.5 hr. sessions. Some ‘A’ teams will have the option of a third training session. The training programs for GPS Tennis is designed by the head coach and delivered by him, the lead and assistant coaches. A major part of these sessions is that they are delivered with a distinguished competitive component to them. Many of the drills and exercises have a competitive element, while developing relevant tennis skills.

GOOD TO KNOW
How is the GPS team selected? The Open and Age Championships are the two major selection criteria used to decide the GPS Tennis team. These are both held in February, so if players wish to maximise their selection opportunities they need to be preparing and training early in Term 1. Other criteria include State and National results, doubles ability, head to head results against other players, and individual challenge results. How do Match Days run? On most match days there will be 1 or 2 match time blocks, generally 8.00-10.30am and/or 10.30am-1.00pm. Match schedules are usually released on the Wednesday of that week; they can vary from school to school and depending on the number of teams participating that day. The 1st IV matches commence at 8.30am and finish between 2pm and 3pm. We encourage you to come along and support your 1st team as they battle it out against their GPS rivals.
