Charles DeatonSpecializing in Texas Postal History for 40 Years
Economic reasons led to the start and ending of many Texas DPOs. Here is onefrom Polk Country caused by the cutting of the virgin East Texas forests. Valdawas a sawmill town that got a PO in 1890. Only 16 years later, as the forestsdisappeared, the PO was shut down, with mail going to Bering, anothersawmill town nearby.

Two Prestigious Societies Add
Excitement to TEXPEX 2017
We are a few weeks away from TEXPEX 2017,
which is shaping up to be a very significant
event that should enthuse the TPHS member-
ship. The show is hosting both the United States Philatelic
Classics Society (USPCS) and the United Postal Stationery
Society (UPSS). These two prestigious groups will bring a
number of nationally acclaimed philatelists, speakers, and
exhibits to the show. Importantly, there will be several new
postal history dealers working the bourse floor who gener-
ally do not attend TEXPEX. This sets up an exciting time
to potentially add to your knowledge and collections.
Highlighting a full schedule of important seminars will
be Dallas’ own Bill Halstead, who will speak on “TexasRailroads in Philately – Searches Yield Scarce Items” at 10
a.m. Saturday. TPHS members giving talks are Joe Crosby
and Larry Ballantyne. Please see a complete show sched-
ule at www.texpex.org.
Also, Lyle Boardman and Tom Koch will be retiring
from their respective positions with our sister society, the
Texas Philatelic Association (TPA) at the end of this year.
For those with crossover memberships in the TPA, Lyle and
Tom’s retirements along with the challenges they present,
will be a major topic of discussion at the TPA annual meet-
ing on Saturday. Those with dual memberships may wish
to attend.
I hope to see you at TEXPEX.
Forgotten Post Offices Final InstallmentThe third installment of John Germann’s monograph
on Texas' Rural Stations, Rural Branches, and Community
Post Offices appears in this issue. The first part appeared in
the November 2015 issue and the second was printed in the
August 2016 issue. Again, our sincere appreciation to John
for choosing us to debut this research that he has been
working on as a labor of love, mixed with blood, sweat and
tears, over the past 20 years.
2nd Gene Gaddy TPHS Literature AwardThe second Gene Gaddy Literature Award for the
best article appearing the TPHS Journal during 2016 will
be presented at TEXPEX. The award carries a certificate
and $75 from the sponsoring group, the Collectors Club of
Dallas, whose members judge the articles. Our editor is in-
eligible for the prize, so it is an award for the general mem-
bership. Start now on working on a nice
postal history story for this year.

Duncanville,
Texas,
cover from
first year of
operation Though a bit torn in places, this 3¢ green entire from Duncanville, Texasshows a double circle date stamp of Aug. 11, 1883, with the name of thetown’s first postmaster, C.P. Nance. The post office opened on Oct. 2, 1882,making this a first-year usage.
After reading the sketch about the Duncanville,
Texas Post Office in the November 2016 issue of
the TPHS Journal, member Michael Thompson
shared this cover from Duncanville during its first year of
operation in 1883.
Besides using his postmaster date stamp, Postmaster
Charles Palmer Nance canceled the embossed cover with a
solid star cancellation.
Nance was a part of a family that left its footprint on the
southwest part of Dallas County. C.P. Nance (July 10,
1861-Aug. 23, 1944) is buried in Wheatland Cemetery on
Hampton Rd. near Interstate 20. His father, Allen Quilla
Nance, and uncle Otwa Bird Nance built the preserved
Nance Farm in nearby DeSoto, Texas. His brother, David
C. Nance, is the subject of a book, The Ragged Rebel by
B.P. Galloway. David served in Col. Parson’s 12th Texas
Cavalry Regiment that was organized near Waxahachie.
Thompson’s primary interest in Texas postal history is
early material from Collin and Ellis counties. He, like many
of us, acquires other material he finds interesting, such as
the Duncanville cover shown here.
Nance Farm has a state historical marker and includes a
two-story home, windmill, windmill well, bucket well, cur-
ing shed, milking barn, and tank house. The farm was
owned by the family until the 1950s. After it was sold a few
times and reduced to only two acres, the City of DeSoto
purchased the facility for historic preservation.
Above – Nance Farm circa 1883 with Regina Nance, Sarah Nance andbaby Olin Nance. The Greek Revival facade was changed to the Victorianfacade shown below in the early 20th century. – DeSoto, Texas website

Forgotten Post Offices
This is the third and final installment of the historyand listings of Texas' Rural Stations, Rural Branches, and Community Post Offices. The author wishes tothank the TPHS for allotting the space necessary topresent the monograph. He also hopes that the reader-ship has enjoyed the work, and will feel free to addany information about this brief and relatively un-
known chapter of the United States Postal Service his-tory. It's been good, and it's been fun.
(Editor’s note – I thank John for letting the TPHSJournal publish this original research. His study is animportant work that needs to be documented. John hascertainly put his mark on Texas postal history researchover the past 20 years. Thanks, again.)

New Braunfels card tours world, returns home
We start by showing an unusual Texas foreign mail item that
opened on Ebay for $1 and ended up realizing $355 among 23
bids. It is an 1879 U.S. 2¢ blue postal card designated for interna-
tional use that carries the printed lines of Universal Postal Union
and (Etats Unis d’Amerique). Dated on the reverse in manuscript
as 1889, Jul 30, the card was directed to what appears to be “Sole
Kwok Lokwai” at “Customs, Amoy, China.” It has a San Fran-
cisco transit handstamp (Aug 9) and a pair of British Crown
Colony Hong Kong 2¢ issues of the 1880s. The “Sole Kwok Lok-
wai” line is marked out in red. Below that in bold black ink is the
line, “Dr. Siegfried Lederer, Wien IX, Thurngasse 19, Austria.” It
is also marked out with red ink in favor of another line near the
bottom of the card that reads “F. Nehls, New - Braunfels, Texas.
U.S. Amerika.” It appears Lederer forwarded the card back to
Nehls to complete its “round-the-world trip.” There is what ap-
pears to be an Austrian 5 krona rose stamp (1883) at the top cen-
ter on the face of the card. Ferdinand Nehls was the original
sender, as indicated by the line on the reverse, “New Braunfels,
Texas 1889, Jul 30.” This is in the same handwriting as the mes-
sage on the reverse and the same handwriting used in the initial
address, “Sole Kwok Lokwai.” Dates in most of the handstamps
are difficult to read.
On the reverse, in
red ink on top of the
original horizontal mes-
sage is vertical script
that appears to be signed
by S. Lederer. Below
that is a pair of labels af-
fixed over the original
message, one bearing an
image of the addressee,
Dr. Siegfried Lederer,
and another gold label
bearing the image of
what looks to be Nehls
himself when compared
to the black-and-white
image at the left that
came from Nehl’s obitu-
ary in the San AntonioExpress on Sept. 3,
1918. Lederer came to
Vienna in 1889 as a tem-
porary professor. He
was a translator of Ital-
ian novels into German.
He later became a high
school teacher in his native city of Prague. Nehls came to Texas
in 1855 and was a professor at New Braunfels for 50 years. He
served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. His obitu-
ary said he “led a retired life among his books and literature, in
which he always found a deep interest to almost the very end.”
John Germann has an 1898 postal card from F. Nehls in
Solms, Texas, to Austria, written in the “universal” language
called Volapük, a predecessor of Esperanto. The Ebay card bears
similar language.
Texas Philatelic Association Secretary-Treasurer Lyle Board-
man points out that "Fred Nehls" was a TPA member back in the
1890s. He was member number 48 in the original numbering sys-
tem and is listed as living in Solms, Texas, located just southeast
of New Braunfels. Nehls had a son, Ferdinand G. Nehls, born in
1872, who became a liquor dealer. It is likely the elder Nehls was
the TPA member.
TPHS President Vince King suggests the Hong Kong stamps
drove the price into the hundreds of dollars even though the card
was noted to have a crease.
A curious piece of Texas postal history. The Ebay listing:

Austria China Hong Kong. Jan. 16, 2017. Item 201775298832.

This book chronicles the history, development and
usages of county and postmaster handstamps of
Texas on cover known to date. The covers, over 150
of them, are presented in full color. There are two
tables which list the known 221 cancellations
alphabetically and then again alphabetically by
county. There is a rarity guide which sets value based
on years of usage and what has been seen or docu-
mented. Several of the covers are from the
stampless period, a few are from the Confederate
period, but most are from the 1870s and 1880s.
