Texas Rangers

There were many different reasons why the Texas Rangers were around. But usually they were there to scare off the Native Americans. However, president Sam Houston did not want to kill the natives so the Rangers lost their jobs for a period of time.

When Mexico had war with the United States, the Texas Rangers made a treaty with the Native Americans. Then the Rangers took on to more of a federal role. During the Mexican war, Rangers became very popular. They showed their strengths in some of the major events in the war, such as the Battle of Monterrey in September 1846 and the Guerrilla Warfare. Some of the major people that helped out in this war are Bigfoot Wallace and Ben Mcculloch.

In 1846 the Texas Rangers started to disband as the war against Mexico started to end. However, later a governor named Hardin Richard Runnels raised 70,000 dollars to hire 100 Texas Rangers. When the Rangers were hired they helped campaign against the Native Indians, and the Texas Rangers also helped to stop the Raids of Natives. The U.S. army could only support the border with a thin line of men because the border size was too big. When a Raid of Natives came in, the Rangers on horseback became a big help.

Even tough the Texas Rangers made a huge Turning point in every thing they did, because the issue was not discussed in the solving of political problems they were forced to disband. The union however made another Group called the Texas state police but they 3 years later, were caused to disband again. Even though the Texas Rangers disbanded they still lived on to helpers in Texas. They always helped until the fight of the Salinero Revolt in 1877 where they surrendered. They lost once but, they still continued to fight for Texas.

Fun fact: This is when the Ranger myths started to come up about the Rangers capturing criminals, right after the disbanding of the Texas Rangers.

Just two years after the Anglo-Americans came to settle, Austin made a group of highly trained Rangers to scout the area.

While fighting Mexico, the Rangers gained worldwide fame, known for their fighting forces.

As the war between Mexico and Texas ended, the Texas Rangers started to disband. Later on, a governor by the name of Hardin Richard Runnels raised 70,000 dollars to recruit 100 Rangers. These Rangers protected the settlers from the Native American raids that were common at this time.

Rangers, were ceased of not helping a lot before the Civil War, but when the Civil War arrived the Rangers ran out without question into the battlefield.

During and after the Reconstruction of Texas, less Rangers were used and more police were recruited.
