RENU KAPOORGrowing up in India, Renu Kapoor absorbed many childhood lessons from her mother and father about being of service to others. She watched her mother help young women in the community further their education, while her father was a founding member of the Rotary service club in India. Kapoor also remembers her parents welcoming into their home students coming from other countries to attend school in their community. She has applied these examples in her professional work as a counsellor, and in her involvement as a volunteer and fundraiser with many organizations and events.
Kapoor earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Lucknow, India, and a Master of Science, Social Work from the University of Wisconsin before she and her husband Don settled in Regina in 1965. She worked as a mental health and addictions counsellor with the former Saskatchewan Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission and the Regina Health District for more than 35 years. Over that period and in retirement, her volunteer activities have encompassed Cultural Connections Regina, Canadian Centre for Substance Abuse, the South Saskatchewan Community Foundation, SaskCulture, Regina Public Library, the YWCA of Regina, Health Care Excellence Awards, United Way of Regina, and the Regina Airport Authority. Kapoor has also
taken lead roles in several fundraising galas, including India Night, Champions for Mental Health, Moving Forward Together and the RCMP Charity Ball. Her volunteer work has been recognized with the Governor General’s Sovereign Medal, Diamond and Jubilee Medals, University of Regina President’s Community Award, YWCA Volunteer of the Year Award, and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Medal, among many others.
ERIC PETERSON
Eric Peterson was born and raised in Indian Head, Saskatchewan. His acting career began when he took part in a student drama production at the University of Saskatchewan. After his second year he dropped out, working for a semi-professional drama company and then moving to England, where he served as an apprentice stage manager, picking up acting roles where he could. After he returned to Canada, Peterson eventually settled in Toronto where he had opportunities to work in home-grown theatre projects telling Canadian stories. Those experiences had a profound effect on him; he became a life-long advocate for cultural expressions in all of the arts that show what living in Canada and being Canadian means.
Peterson’s long list of acting credits includes The Farm Show, a collective creation based on conversations with people in Ontario’s farm country, and Billy Bishop Goes to War, an enduring musical stage play with Peterson’s long-

time collaborator, John Gray. The often-revived production dramatizing the life of World War One fighter pilot Billy Bishop has been a staple for the duo throughout their careers, on stage and on film.
Peterson has also had lead roles in the TV series Street Legal, This is Wonderland, and Saskatchewan’s own Corner Gas, where he played the cantankerous Oscar Leroy. It was a huge thrill to work on a show in his home province, he says, proving that Canada can create successful cultural productions based on who we are. Peterson reprised the Oscar Leroy role in Corner Gas: The Movie, and voices Oscar in the Corner Gas Animated TV series.

GORDON AND JILL RAWLINSONBoth Gordon and Jill Rawlinson were born and raised in Saskatchewan: Jill on a farm near Redvers and Gordon in Prince Albert. Jill received the Governor General’s Academic Award in high school, studied at the University of Saskatchewan and then graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Gordon received a Bachelor of Commerce degree (with distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan.
Gordon grew up around CKBI radio in Prince Albert, the broadcasting company his father E. A. Rawlinson established in 1946. Gordon expanded the company — Rawlco Radio — to include stations in Regina, Saskatoon and Calgary, all of which have been recognized for their emphasis on community service. That same focus on community is conspicuous in the couple’s lengthy list of
philanthropic support directed to health care, education, the arts, and assistance to Aboriginal entrepreneurs and business leaders, primarily through their family foundation (the Lily Street Foundation), which Jill chairs.
A partial list of the many organizations and programs Gordon and Jill have donated to includes the Mother Baby Care Centre at the Regina General Hospital, support for Aboriginal students studying business education at the University of Saskatchewan and several initiatives at the University of Regina. In Prince Albert they support the E. A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts and the Victoria Hospital Foundation. They have also donated to the Saskatchewan Hospital at the Battlefords and for the development of a multiplex facility in North Battleford. The couple are also major supporters of the United Way in Saskatoon and Regina, and the work of the Canadian Red Cross in Saskatchewan.

BARBARA RYAN
Barb Ryan is receiving an honorary degree from the University of Regina for her compassion, kindness and her willingness to nurture everyone and anyone who will let her. Besides her own four children - Erica, Jill, Steve and Jon - the extended family under her care includes refugees, immigrants, and international students who have settled in Regina.
Mothering her own kids gave her good connections in the community that Ryan put to use after her husband Bob
45TH SPRING CONVOCATION 6 UNIVERSITY OF REGINA
died at age 54. She joined the Regina Progress Club, which had provided the down payment for a settlement house for refugees. That experience led her to the Regina Open Door Society and the work the organization does with immigrants. Ryan was deeply moved by the stories of what the immigrants had endured to reach Regina, and their resilience. Since then Ryan has hosted two families from Africa and a refugee family of eight from Syria, helping them to settle in their new home community. She is a member of a support group called Women to Women, where members meet monthly with newcomers to teach them a skill or craft. Through the World University Service of Canada program at the University of Regina, Ryan invites into her home students from other countries who are away from their families. She has also employed her networking skills in support of fund-raisers such as the Progress Club’s Festival of Trees and the Champagne Classic women’s golf tournament in support of the children’s ward at the Regina General Hospital.
Ryan has been recognized with the 2012 Saskatchewan Diamond Jubilee Award, the 2016 Red Cross Humanitarian Award, the Canada 150 Award, and the Saskatchewan Volunteer Award.
JONATHAN RYAN
Honorary degree recipient Jon Ryan will be forever remembered for the touchdown pass he threw that sparked his team’s comeback playoff victory in 2014, sending the Seattle Seahawks to the NFL Super Bowl. The scoring toss also earned Ryan a “first” in the league record book,
as the first punter to throw a touchdown pass in a playoff game. Ryan insists one of his greatest accomplishments was to be named a team captain by his fellow teammates for four consecutive years. That recognition, he suggests, came from leading by example on and off the field, and treating everyone he met during his workdays with the same respect.
Ryan was born and raised in Regina. He played running back, placekicker and punter with the Sheldon-Williams Spartans, and then punter and wide receiver for four seasons with the University of Regina Rams. In his final year he was named a Canada West first team all-star and CIS all-star, as well as receiving three team awards from the Rams.
Ryan began his professional football career as a punter for the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers for two seasons, and then with the NFL's Green Bay Packers, followed by ten seasons with the Seattle Seahawks. He was part of the Seahawks Super Bowl championship team in 2013. On May 14, 2019, Ryan signed a deal to play with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
Ryan founded the Gear Up Foundation to provide proper equipment and more training for coaches working with kids playing minor football in Regina. In addition, Jon is the founder of the Bob Ryan Foundation (named after his father), which provides scholarship support to the University of Regina Rams football team.

The Governor General’s Academic Silver Medal is awarded at Convocation to the most distinguished graduating student receiving a first degree and is based on academic excellence. Tristan Kenneth Heisler is the recipient of this award at the 2019 Spring Convocation.
Tristan’s academic career in the Software Systems Engineering (SSE) program has produced a final undergraduate grade point average of over 97%. He has been on the Dean’s Honor List every term during his studies. He has achieved a term grade point average of over 95% every term in his academic studies, receiving high 90’s and even 100% as a final grade in 15 of his courses! Over the course of his studies, Tristan has received 31 very prestigious engineering awards, scholarships and prizes; including receiving the University Medal in 201 and the University of Regina Academic Gold Prize three times. Tristan was also in the Cooperative Education Program and worked at iQmetrix in Regina.
Tristan was an exceptional leader throughout his four years in Engineering. He volunteered with Regina Engineering Student’s Society (RESS) in several different executive roles. It was at RESS where he developed professional relationships, building unity, managing revenues and leading the Society towards success.
Tristan’s capstone project titled, No Patience, is a web application that assists both patients and doctors by attempting to address the long wait times
in medical clinics. Users of the app are notified if the clinic is running ahead of, or behind time, lets them know the estimated length of time the appointment is, and finally allows patients to book a doctor’s appointment without having to phone the clinic. Tristan has already begun his career in Software Systems Engineering and is working at iQmetrix as a Software Developer.
Tristian is also the recipient of the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science APEGS Gold Medal. The APEGS Gold Medal is awarded to a graduating student each spring who portrays a combination of leadership qualities in university and other activities and academic achievement throughout their program. 70% of the decision is on academic standing and 30% of the decision is based on leadership qualities.
The Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science congratulates Tristan on his accomplishments and wishes him the best in his future endeavours.

The Faculty of Media, Art, and Performance Dean’s Medal* is awarded to a student who has demonstrated exemplary academic work as well as leadership while completing a degree. The recipient at the 2019 Spring Convocation is Jasmine Jade Tsui, who is graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Performance, Great Distinction.
Jasmine is an excellent student (89.06%), and an accomplished musician. Her hard work is praised by her professors, teachers, and local musicians. Her academic and artistic abilities have been recognized with 17 scholarships and awards. She is also the recipient of the W. A. Riddell Award, a prize earned by a graduate with a first degree and most distinguished artistic merit as determined by the average in her major area (90.62%).
A passionate musician and scholar, Jasmine has demonstrated the dedication required to pursue an academic career and to be a successful professional musician. Lisa Simmermon, Principal Timpanist in the Regina Symphony Orchestra, notes that Jasmine shows “distinct bravery” in wanting to excel within the male-dominated area of professional percussion.
Leadership and involvement in extracurricular musical activities at the University and in the community, volunteer work with the Music Students’ Association, and participation in the National Youth Orchestra is a demonstration of Jasmine’s commitment to her music community as well as her development as a leader within it. According to Dr. Barbara Reul, “she thrives as a team player, but I would argue that it is her leadership potential and self-motivation that set her apart from others.”
The attributes described above make Jasmine a role model for fellow students and young musicians who have had a chance to get to know her during her time at the University of Regina. These attributes will also serve her well as she begins graduate work at the University of Toronto this fall.

The University of Regina is situated on Treaty 4 lands with a presence in Treaty 6 territory. These are the territories of the nêhiyawak (Cree), Anihšinapek (Saulteaux), and Dakota, Lakota, and Nakoda, and the homeland of the Métis. Today, these lands continue to be the shared territory of many diverse peoples from near and far.
The University of Regina operates under the terms of The University of Regina Act. Convocation comprises the Chancellor, the Senate, all graduates of the University of Regina, all graduates of the University of Saskatchewan at Regina Campus, and such other classes of persons as the Senate may from time to time determine. Graduates of the University of Saskatchewan, as defined by The University Act, 1968, may become members of Convocation of the University of Regina by notifying the Secretary in writing. Convocation meets twice annually, in June and October, unless there are extraordinary circumstances.
45TH SPRING CONVOCATION 46 UNIVERSITY OF REGINA
The Chancellor is elected by the members of Senate, holds office for three years, presides over Convocation, confers degrees and is ex officio Chair of the Senate and a member of the Board of Governors.
Senate is the University’s “window on the world.” It is concerned with the academic welfare of the institution and has a variety of duties and powers. Most of the broader issues of academic policy within the University are reserved for Senate’s approval. In another role, it acts as an ultimate court in academic affairs. The membership of Senate includes persons, ex officio, or by virtue of the University offices they hold. Convocation elects another fourteen members of Convocation to the Senate. Students registered in the University elect six students of the University to Senate. In addition, any professional society, group or organization in the province that Senate believes contributes in a significant way to the social, economic and cultural welfare of the province may be represented on Senate.
The Board of Governors consists of eleven members and is responsible for overseeing the administrative and business affairs of the University. It ultimately has authority in matters related to the raising and spending of University funds, and the acquisition and management of University property.
Council is the senior legislative body on academic matters. Its membership includes administrative officers, all Deans and directors of academic programs, all members of the teaching staff except sessional lecturers, and a number of student representatives. All matters of substance related to the academic affairs of the University must be considered and approved by the Council, as well as matters of academic discipline.
The Executive of the University of Regina Council (Executive of Council) has been
empowered by Council to act on its behalf in all matters with the provision that requesting a special meeting of Council may challenge a decision of the Executive. Executive of Council membership is devised as a proportional basis of the academic composition of this University.
Disciplines that are related to one another in the broader areas of teaching are, for purposes of administrative and academic planning, brought together into Faculties, of which there are currently ten. Each Faculty is headed by a Dean; formal membership includes the Dean and the teaching members of the various associated disciplines. The Deans are recognized by The University of Regina Act as being the chief executive officers of their respective Faculties and are directly responsible to the President, through the Provost and Vice-President (Academic). Subject to the statutes of the Senate and the University of Regina Council, each Faculty has charge of all matters of scholarship in its disciplines and programs.
