Colin’s Story
• Colin just got home from a foreign country
• He goes to a Thanksgiving dinner with many different foods
• After drinking coffee, he falls over in pain holding his stomach
• His family brainstorms different ideas of what could be ailing him

ULCERS
GENERAL INFO• A stomach ulcer is an open sore that develops on
the lining of the stomach• The most common symptom is a burning pain in
abdomen• A lining of mucus (acts as a protective layer
between the stomach and acids)CAUSES• 2 main causes:
• Bacteria (Helicobacter pylori)• Drugs (Aspirin, ibuprofen and other non-
steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs)

GENERAL• Lactose intolerance is the inability to digest lactose (milk
and dairy products)• Lactose is usually digested in the small intestine but with
a lactose intolerant individual, the lactose cannot be broken down and continues on to the large intestine
SYMPTOMS• Abdominal bloating• Cramps• Diarrhea• Vomiting

GENERAL • Made from cholesterol and other things in bile• Can be smaller than a grain of sand to as large as a golf
ball• Most do NOT cause problems but when blocking a duct,
treatment is neededCAUSES• Cholesterol and other things in bile form together to make
stone like figures• Also can form if the gallbladder does not emptySYMPTOMS• Mild pain in the pit of your stomach• Mild pain in the pit of your right part of belly• Pain may spread to right upper back or shoulder blade
area• Pain can be steady or can come and go or get worse when
eating• Fever and chills• Skin or eye whites turn yellow
