The Bill of Rights•The first ten amendments of the twenty-seven total amendments•Was required by Anti-Federalists in order for them to ratify the Constitution

1st Amendment

Guarantees the freedom of Religion, Assembly, Press, Petition, and Speech

Way to remember this: RAPPS

2nd Amendment

Gives U.S. citizens the right to bear arms

Way to remember this: Bears have 2 arms

3rd Amendment

The government may not house troops in a private home

4th Amendment

Prohibits illegal searches and seizures (searches require a warrant or “reasonable cause”)

Way to remember this: 4 can’t come through the door

5th AmendmentGives rights to the accused:

Must be indicted by a grand jury

Double jeopardy

Self-Incrimination

Way to remember this: plead to the 5th

6th AmendmentGives the right to a speedy and public trial

Gives right to:

a fair jury

be informed of your crime

confront witnesses and have witnesses on your behalf

be appointed a lawyer if you can’t afford it

7th Amendment

Guarantees trial by jury in civil cases involving more than $20

8th Amendment

Prohibits cruel and unusual punishment

9th Amendment

People’s rights are not limited to those mentioned in the Constitution

Way to remember this: Nine not limited

10th AmendmentDeclares that the people/states retain all powers not denied to them or specifically granted to the federal government.

Way to remember this: rights not written

11th and 12th11th- a lawsuit brought by a citizen or foreign state against a state must be tried in the state court (1 vs. 1)

12th- talked about the election of the president (1) and vice president (2)

13th, 14th, and 15th

These are considered the “Civil War Amendments”

13th- abolished slavery (13-unlucky number

14th- gave citizenship to former slave and “due process of law” to all citizens

15th- gave men the right to vote regardless of “race, color, or previous conditions” (every man may vote- 15 letters)

16th and 17th16th- gave Congress the power to collect an income tax

17th- the people would directly elect the senators for each state from then on (seventeen senators)

18th AmendmentProhibited the production, sale, use, or transportation of alcoholic beverages.

Way to remember this: PATS (Prohibited Alcohol Transportation and Sale)

19th Amendment

Granted women’s suffrage (the right to vote)

Way to remember this: You can make a girl from the number 19.

20th AmendmentWas considered the “lame duck” amendment

It required newly elected Congress to hold their first session on January 3rd.

It also made inauguration day January 20th.

21st and 22nd21st- repealed the 18th amendment (21- the age when you can legally drink)

22nd- limited the president from serving no more than two terms or ten years

23rd and 24th23rd- gave the people of the District of Columbia the right to vote in elections; gave DC three electoral votes.

24th- abolished poll taxes as a requirement to vote in general elections. (2 fo no mo po- 24 no more polls)

25th, 26th, and 27th25th- discusses presidential Succession And Disability (SAD)

26th- gave 18 year olds the right to vote in election

27th- salary increases for Congressmen will not take effect until the next session of Congress (27 salaries)
