Message from Deacon Gerard
Moving Forward
In today’s 1st Reading when asked by his disciples if He will restore the Kingdom at this time, Jesus
answers "It is not for you to know the times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority."
Do you find Jesus' answer frustrating, or are you just as happy to not know God's plans all at once? I
waver between those two poles, sometimes wishing I knew more of what God was up to in the world
(and in my life) and sometimes content to leave the details to one whose wisdom is way beyond my own
limited vision.
Jesus may well have been giving another message here: You don't need to know that answer! Having been
gathered by the risen Christ and had the Scriptures opened for them, having been commanded to spread
the gospel to the world, the disciples had all they needed to go forward.
And so do we. There's nothing wrong with wanting more insight into God's designs as long as it doesn't
get in the way of loving God and neighbour and spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ.
Deacon Gerard
News from our Diocese
Merlin Shrine Pilgrimage Bishop Fabbro and Bishop Dabrowski invite the faithful to celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Mount Carmel at the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary on Tuesday, July 16. The day will begin with lunch at noon, followed by a concert performed by the Wallaceburg LifeTeen band at 1:00pm. A rosary procession will take place at 1:30 pm, followed by Mass celebrated by Bishop Dabrowski and benediction at 2:00 pm. The faithful can join a walking pilgrimage to the Shrine, either: a 20 km walk departing from St. Ursula Church in Chatham at 7 am, a 10 KM walk departing from the North Buxton Museum at 10 am, or a 4 KM walk departing from the Merlin Community Hall at 10 am. Parishes are invited to organize a pilgrimage to this celebration. A letter from Bishop Dabrowski, along with a hyperlink to a printable poster, will be sent to you soon. Priest Pension Fund Collection This year’s Priest Pension collection will be taken up on Father’s Day weekend, June 15-16. Please look for a special insert and envelope in this weekend bulletin and give as generously as you can. Please also keep all our priests in your prayers. Your generosity is a sign of the care and affection that we feel for our priests, who retire after many decades of years having ministered to our spiritual needs. Our priests give us a lifetime of service, this Father’s Day let’s give back!
St. Peter’s Seminary Offering Envelopes
Annual St. Peter’s Seminary Appeal Every May, there is a special collection for St. Peter’s Seminary called “Rekindling the Gift”. The information was in the last bulletin with the return envelope which you can send directly to St. Peter’s Seminary (please make your cheques out to St. Peter’s Seminary). You will receive an income tax receipt directly from St. Peter’s Seminary). If you would like to make your donation through your Parish, which will be included in your 2019 Income Tax Receipt, place your donation in a separate envelope with your name, address and the Parish with whom you are registered. If writing a cheque, please address it to your Parish. A suggestion for your donation is the amount you give to your parish weekly. We thank those who have generously donated already and for your continued support.
CCCB Messages for the 2019 March for Life The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops (CCCB), in profound unison with Pope Francis, affirms that all human life should be respected and protected from the moment of conception until natural death. The Bishops of Canada have and will continue to advocate and collaborate with organizations across the country, many of which are not Catholic, in endeavours to bring together people from different perspectives who believe in the sanctity of life. Events such as the annual and regional Marches for Life are meaningful opportunities to unite thousands of people speaking with one voice to proclaim the dignity of all human life. In full communion with the Holy Father, Catholic Bishops and all faithful are united in declaring, as the Church has believed since its beginning, that the "distinctiveness of human life is an absolute good," and that "abortion and euthanasia [are] extremely grave evils that contradict the Spirit of life and plunge us into the anti-culture of death". Likewise, Pope Francis has recently observed that the "threshold of basic respect
for human life is being crossed, and brutally at that, not only by instances of individual conduct but also by the effects of societal choices and structures" (15 January 2019 letter from Pope Francis to the President of the Pontifical Academy for Life). Today, the Bishops join their prayers with all those who stand up for life.
