The BG-Sentinel Trap

• Presented by Kirby Foley

BG–Sentinel Trap

• Developed and manufactured by BioGents in

Regensburg Germany www.biogents.com

• Sold here by BioQuip www.bioquip.com

• Developed over 15 years of research

• Originally designed to attract Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus

Assemble Trap

BG–Sentinel Trap

• Mimics convection currents created by a human

body

– The BG-Lure consists of a combination of ammonia,

lactic acid, and fatty acids (substances on human skin)

• Employs attractive visual cues

– Uses the black and white color scheme

• Releases attractants through a large surface

area

– 14 inch diameter area covered by gauze

Power Supply

• Power supply can be 120 AC or 12 volt battery

• Using the transformer and extension cord you

can trap 24 / 7 …let it function as the Mosquito

Magnet type trap or just overnight.

• We trapped 2 PM to 7 AM and used 12 volt

battery

BG–Sentinel Trap

• We received and started setting two traps in mid

August

• We set a total of thirty-six nights

• 21 nights we set a BG-Sentinel and a CDC trap

side by side for comparison (baited with CO2)

– The following slides will show the results:

CDC TRAP BG TRAP

BG-Trap Results

• More Ae. vexans, Ochlerotatus, Culex, Coquillettidia, and Psorophora with CO2

• 80 times more Aedes albopictus– We trapped 631 in one setting of one trap

– Ae. vexans and Ps. ferox really increase with use of CO2

• Equal number of Culiseta melanura (w/CO2)

• Less Anopheles, Cx. territans, and Ur. Sapphirina in BG-Sentinel

Results

• BG trap will average 300% more than CDC

• BG Trap with CO2 will average 34% more than BG Trap without CO2

• The BG-Sentinel Trap is a very good tool to have in your surveillance program
