What lipids do for living things…Lipids (fats) contain a lot of energy (Calories). The body uses fat to store energy to use in the future. Fats insulate the body and cushion internal organs. Some hormones are made from lipids.
They are are called
Other types of lipids are Waxes
Steroid Hormones
Oils also help to Waterproof animals continuecontinue
If birds already have oil on their feathers, why do petroleum oil
spills kill birds in great numbers?
When the bird’s feathers get petroleum oil
on them, they no longer are waterproof so
they absorb water and make the bird too
heavy to float. Their feathers also no longer keep them warm.
Most birds will die because they get too cold, but other birds that are on land will
usually die from eating the oil as they try to clean it off of their feathers with their beaks.
What is a way to stop this??
Knit them sweaters!!
It keeps them from preening their feathers and eating the oil, so they have a
better chance of living.
This is real! Hundreds of sweaters were knit for penguins who were caught in oil spills!
Back
Although very fashionable, the penguins did have to leave their sweaters behind when they were returned to the
wild.

The elements found in Lipids areCarbon
HydrogenOxygen
You might have noticed that both carbohydrates and lipids have the elements Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen.
A carbohydrate, has twice as many hydrogen atoms as the number of oxygen atoms.
On the other hand, lipids have a lot more than twice the amount hydrogen atoms as the number of oxygen atoms.
Which one of the following molecules is a lipid?
A carbohydrate?

Energy Gained from Lipids
Eating 1 gram of fat provides your body with
9 Calories. Notice if you eat 1 gram of fat, you are gaining more than twice the amount of
Calories than from a gram of carbohydrate or protein!
