The first step of Discipleship is Worship, &

1. Worship enables us to enter into the Presence of God

2. Worship comes with a Price – God’s and ours

It is the worshipper’s intention, that matters to God, not the monetary value of his gift.

To God, your bigger giving in days of abundance will not be more pleasing to Him than your sacrificial giving in your days of want.

God wants everyone to give, because to give is to be like Him. God is generous, and so we are to be generous like Him.

“Araunah said to David, ‘Let my lord the king take whatever pleases him and offer it up. Here are oxen for the burnt offering, and here are threshing sledges and ox yokes for the wood. O King, Araunah gives all this to the king.’ Araunah also said to him, ‘May the LORD your God accept you.’

But the king replied to Araunah, ‘No, I insist on paying you for it. I will not sacrifice to the LORD my God burnt offerings that cost me nothing.’” -

The Israelite cannot get rid of damaged goods by passing it off as an offering to God.

The value of what we give must be significant to us.

“‘When someone brings a grain offering to the Lord, his offering is to be of fine flour. He is to pour oil on it, put incense on it and take it to Aaron’s sons the priests.

The priest shall take a handful of the fine flour and oil, together with all the incense, and burn this as a memorial portion on the altar, an offering made by fire, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.”

– Leviticus 2:1-2

The fine flour represented

a) What God had first created – the wheat

b) What man had made of God’s gift – planting the wheat and then turning it into flour

Olive oil added to the sacrifice made it into a cake that could be handled easily,

andFrankincense, which was expensive, made the whole

offering into a worthwhile “sacrifice”.

Some people wrongly believe that if they want something from God, especially financial blessing, they should make a “down-payment” to Him first as a sign of their sincerity, and very soon God would reward his/her sincerity by giving this person more financial blessings.

We are to give, and we can give, simply because God has already blessed us, and will continue to bless us as we follow Him faithfully.

“In the USA, on average, church-goers give about 2.38% of their income as offerings in church, or towards Christians works and missions.” – Christian Post, 2009

What if we don’t give ?

1. We miss a chance to worship and please God in accordance to His will

2. We miss out on being a part of God’s blessing

3. We miss now, and the chance to give might be lost some day.

Grain offering

a) Uncooked wheat (2:1-3),

b) Cooked wheat (2:4-10) 3 types allowed :

i) oven-baked cakes, ii) griddle-toasted cakes, iii) pan-fried cakes

c) First-fruits (probably natural barley) (2:14-16).

What if we don’t give ?

1. We miss a chance to worship and please God in accordance to His will

2. We miss out on being a part of God’s blessing

3. We miss now, and the chance to give might be lost some day.
