Worship in November
From Our Pastor
This summer I lost my purse. It was an old, worn-out purse, but still I
was concerned that someone might take the contents. The next day when I
claimed it from where it had been turned in, everything was still in the purse,
just as I had left it. I was not sure whether to be relieved or offended.
Jesus said be careful where you put what is important to you, because
where you put your treasures, that is where your heart is going to be. Some
people put their treasures in purses that rot, and get moth eaten. But don’t you
do that, Jesus said. You put your treasures in your future in heaven. (Matthew
6:19-24)
Pickpockets say they can tell in which pocket you carry your money
simply by observing you. Most people do not realize how much they touch or
check the pocket where they have their money. But an astute pickpocket
knows how to watch to know exactly where to go to get it. Wherever your
treasure is, that is where your attention goes. That is what Jesus is saying.
A pastor I know went to get a bank loan for a car. He was asked to list
his debts and financial obligations. On the list he included his pledge to his
church. “You need to know we do not count that,” the loan officer said. “You
need to know that I do,” the pastor responded. Not long after that, he said, the
loan officer started to attend the church where he was pastor. She ended up
joining and becoming a leader there.
The question for us to consider this stewardship season is not where do
we want our treasures to be? Rather it is where do we want our hearts to be?
Blessings,
Wanda

Ebola Virus Outbreak: What Can We Do?
A communication from Dr. Bill Neely, pastor of First Presbyterian, Greenville, and a member of the
national response team for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance:
“I have received information from John Robinson, National Director of Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance for the PC (U.S.A.), concerning the Ebola virus outbreak. John outlined positive steps that
each of us can take when dealing with any pandemic. He also reminded us that at this point, while
the crisis is certainly huge in Africa and particularly in Liberia, here in the United States, there have
been few cases.
The first thing that John called on us to do is to pray. Pray for health care workers,
particularly those who are missionaries in the heart of the outbreak. Pray for those who are suffering
from the virus and the families who care for them and those who grieve the loss of life. In addition,
be aware of those who must deal with the bodies of the deceased and the cleanup of homes and
hospital rooms to stop the spread of the virus.
Secondly, the most effective thing each of us can do is to take care of ourselves. If you are
able, get a flu shot, and if age appropriate, a pneumonia shot and a shingles shot. This may sound
strange since these will not prevent Ebola, but complications of multiple elements contribute to the
body’s inability to recover. We also protect others with whom we come in contact when we
ourselves are protected. In addition to that, if we are ill with a cold or fever, we should avoid contact
with others.
And finally, John encouraged us to give financially to the work of Presbyterian Disaster
Assistance in its efforts to provide medical supplies and medication to those suffering from Ebola.
You may do this by making a gift to your church and designating it for PDA, or you can give online
at http://pda.pcusa.org/.”

By John McPhaul
My wife Laura and I had the privilege of hosting our
Middle School Confirmation Class at a youth retreat
at Camp Don Lee in October. This retreat was
planned and led by the youth council leadership of
our own New Hope Presbytery. It was impressive to
see the leadership and faith that these high schoolers
displayed. It was equally impressive to witness how
our Confirmation Class bonded and worshiped
during this weekend. The van ride home proved this
to be true as the trip was filled with stories, games
and conversation.
The theme for the weekend was Re-Create and the
scripture lesson from 2 Corinthians 5:17
KJV. “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away;
behold, all things are new.” NIRV “Anyone who believes in Christ is a new creation. The
old is gone! The new has come.” During each worship session the group discussed ways
and things that can be recreated. Examples included an acorn germinating into an oak tree,
a YouTube video showing a young female recreating her look with hair styles and fashion
over a four year period and even how Saul became Paul.
What will the church look like 10 years from now, 20 years from now and even 30 years
from now? Our future will be bright if we choose to Re-Create the church through our
youth. This will require our time, talents and resources from all generations to lead Sunday
School Classes, Youth Groups, Retreats and Mission Projects. So Rise Up O Church and
Re-Create our church through our youth.

Who
Me?
On Monday, October 6, members of First Presbyterian's
Handyman's Club began construction on a 12 by 10 storage shed
for the Rev. Lisa Hermann, Pediatric Chaplain at Vidant
Hospital and our volunteer Parish Associate. The Handymen
completed the project at 4:00 PM on Saturday, at a total cost to
Lisa of about $1,400.00 for materials!
The people involved worked hard and
long hours, with Earl Stroud, Tom Thutt,
and Ted Berry doing the roof work.
Roger Brown, Bud Bradshaw, and Larry
Landry preferred to keep their feet
firmly planted on the ground, and
did the things which did not involve
the use of ladders. Lisa even got
into the act, receiving a lesson from
Earl on the use of a nail gun. It was
a good project and the only injuries
incurred were sore muscles. Now
the group is ready for more
wheelchair ramps.

Kinston Federation of Churches,
P.O. Box 1899, Kinston, North Carolina 28503
The Kinston Federation of Churches keeps the Bible in High School program viable and alive at Kinston High School through your financial support during the year. The school is welcoming Mrs. Gail Cobles as the new Bible teacher. Mrs. Guttenberger is not leaving Kinston High School, but was asked to teach in another capacity. Mrs. Guttenberger has had Mrs. Cobles as an assistant for
several years. Mrs. Cobles holds degrees in education and Bible. Her experience at Kinston High School will serve to keep three Bible classes of 30 or more students per class a part of the elective studies that have been offered at Kinston High for the past 72 years. Your contributions make it possible to educate each student each semester for approximately $250 per student. Just think, for just $25/month or $5/week, these students are learning life values to mold them to become better citizens and leaders later in life. We hope you will continue to support the efforts to keep a Bible class in the curriculum.

On Sunday, November 2 we

We will also collect our Bucket

In many parts of the world, filling this is
