HistoryThe name of the town of Burgas comes from

the Byzantium PIRGOS. In Latin it is mentioned as BURGOS – The Towre . Bourgas is marked on maps for the first time in 1733.

It is an important trading center in the XIX century with modern architecture.

The Fest of BurgasSaint Nicolas day is

celebrated on the 6 of December.

Saint Nicolas is a protector of sailors and patron of the town.

Culture

The festivals in Bourgas The International Folklore Festival has a long

tradition of meeting people and cultures.

“Nature – Humanity- Harmony“ is the moto of of the big spring exposition « Flora » in the beutiful sea garden of Burgas. Other exclusive event is the

International Compétition of latin-american dance.

The art galery and museums of Burgas represent its cultural traditions and history. The archeological department presents an unique collection of marine artefacts.

The Grand building of the Opera House is a home for the philharmoniec society,the Marionett Theatre, the folklore group “Strandja” and the chourus “ Rodna pessen “ providing a variety of cultural events for the city of Burgas and its guests.

Center of educationBurgas is an

important educational center with its fifteen secondary schools, three language schools and two universities, providing excelent opportunities for the young people and european standards.

The Sea Garden of Bourgas

Bourgas is famous with its public garden along the beach with variety of plants and places for entertainment.

The modern town expanded among the lakes. The industrial port is the biggest in Bulgaria.The airport welcomes more then two millions

passengers every summer .

Burgas – the Black Sea coast pearle

St. Anastasia IslandSt. Anastasia Island

is a Bulgarian islet in the Black Sea. It is located 1.5 km off the coast, at 12 metres above sea level, and covers a territory of one hectare. It is the only inhabited island off the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast.

St. Ivan IslandSt. Ivan Island is the

largest Bulgarian island in the Black Sea, with an area of 0.66 square kilometres

Burgas is the biggest town on the southen coast of Bulgaria . It is surrounded by the see

and three lakes.

Burgas has a humid subtropical climate, with some continental influences. The summertime in

Burgas lasts about five months from mid-May until late September. Average temperatures

during high season is 24 °C. Summertime sea temperatures stay around 23 °C-24 °C at sunrise and go up to 29 °C-30 °C at dawn, averaging 26

°C.

Winters are milder compared with the inland part of the country, with average temperatures of 4 °C-5 °C and below 0 °C during the night.

Snow is possible in December, January, February and rarely in March. The highest

temperature was recorded in August 2003, at 42.8 °C and the lowest at -17.8 °C in January,

1952.
