Charlotte was attacked four times by the British fleetduring the War of 1812. Jim will describe those events andthe details of those attacks which occurred on Oct 1,1812,

June 15, & Sept 11,1813 and May 14,1814.

"President's Message"We at the Greece Historical

Society strive to preserve the pastfor the future and that involvesmore than just collecting & stor-ing old artifacts and documents.We also have the responsibility tothe community to display these

items and to use them to educateour visitors while preserving them for future gen-erations.

Collecting, archiving, preserving, displayingand educating takes the time and talent of ourdedicated volunteers. Our collection contains thou-sands of items, but our biggest asset and some-times our biggest liability is our home at 595 LongPond Rd. Unlike most small museums in the area,which are owned by the local municipality, we

own and operate our museum on land leased fromthe Town of Greece. We are responsible for thecare and upkeep of the building, both inside andoutside including the grounds immediately sur-rounding the building.

Besides utilities, security system, insuranceand general inside and outside maintenance,something is always in need of repair or replace-ment. This year alone we replaced the phone sys-tem, painted doors and the north porch, replacedsome carpet, fixed a plumbing problem, purchased

a new dehumidifier for the basement, and havereplaced the back doors on our exhibit hall. Evenwith our dedicated volunteers, building mainte-nance and upkeep is not free. But thanks to yourmembership, business contributions, local gardenclubs, help from the Town of Greece and a fewgrants, we are able maintain our museum. Withyour continued support and the support from thecommunity we will remain a local asset for you andfor the future generations of our town.

**Museum Happenings**Christmas Open-House November 15

Community Christmas TreeSee our Community Christmas Trees decoratedwith ornaments that depict our communitysbusinesses, service organizations, churches and

residents. It is a way to represent our diversitywhile sharing the meaning behind each orna-ment. A Christmas Open-House is planned forNovember 15th which will include refreshmentDecorations throughout the house and museuwill add to the festivities. To participate, use ouregistration form on page six.

Christmas Tree Display is open for viewing onSundays Nov. 15th-Dec 13th from 2-4:30 pm.

We are looking for people like you! We need MUSEUM DOCENTS able to volunteer a little bit of time!!We are looking for new docents to show our guests the Museum. It is fun and interesting because we meet alot of great peo-ple who come through for tours. It is easy to learn about the Museum and we will train you on how to docent. We docent onSundays from 2-4:30 p.m. You will be able to choose which Sunday each month works best for your schedule.

We are a fun group and the more docents we have, the more fun we have! Earlier this year our volunteer docents had theirannual Appreciation Luncheon at Adams Basin Inn. It was a wonderful time getting together and being the tourists.

Call me now to join our group for just a few hours once a month. Youll be glad you called and youll be helping us, too.

Thank you all for supporting the Society and the Museum through yourmembership renewals, visits to the museum and attendance at our popularmonthly programs at the Greece Town Hall on the 2nd Tuesday each month.

As our first Book of the Month, we are featuring Ellis Island Famous

Immgrants (Images of America Series) by Barry Moreno. You are sure to enjoyphotos and sketches of the famous people who immigrated through Ellis Island.

As you know, immigrants landed and were processed by officials before being allowed on themainland to finally begin their search of future life in America. Ellis Island was opened in 1892 andclosed in 1943. Today it is a beautiful park and restored visitor center.

We are anxious to hear your stories about your ancestors. Tell us about what they experienced at EllisIsland. With your help we will develop a small booklet of such stories.

For the first time we are offering a 15% discount on our Greece history book Eight Miles Along theShore The book makes a great Christmas present for anyone who enjoys history. The sale laststhrough the end of December.

COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS TREE

November 15December 13

The Greece Historical Society is planning two Community Christmas Trees at The Greece Museum decorated with

ornaments that depict our communitys businesses, service organizations, churches and residents. It is a way to represent ou

diversity while sharing the meaning behind each ornament. A Christmas Open-House is planned for November 15 th which w

include refreshments. Decorations throughout the house and museum will add to the festivities.

As a member of our community, would you join us by contributing a hand created or purchased ornament? You ma

send a traditional or any other style Christmas ornament. If you are a business or organization, you may have a recognizable

logo to feature or your profession may lend itself to the design. Individuals might like to choose something related to history

such as Mother of Sorrows church, or something of a personal interest. The ornaments can be flat or ball shaped, but no larg

than 4 inches. A form is available on page 6 on which you can give a brief description and pertinent data about your orname

The events information is included. Our tree will be unique, created by our community!

We will need to receive your ornament before November 9th. You may leave your ornament for future use or pick it

after December 13th. We are open on Sundays from 2-4:30 pm and Monday morning 9:30-noon. Thank you for your partici

tion in creating a festive community Christmas tree. We look forward to seeing you and your friends this holiday season.

The Greece Historical Societies Forthieth Anniversary (1969-2009)

(Right and opposite) Some memories of the early years.....As the Town of Greece Sesquicentennial approached in 1972 and the

United States BiCentennial in 1976, several history minded citizens and theTown Historian thought it might be the opportune time to organize an historicalsociety in the town. Early in September of 1969 a small notice of a meetinglater that month was posted on the bulletin board at the Mitchell Road Library.Virginia Tomkiewicz, the Town Historian, sent letters on town stationary to town

citzens interested in perhaps forming such an organization. Seventeen peopleattended the first meeting at the library on September 30th. By January of 1970,after two more meetings, the newly formed society had seventy two members.At the end of January, a total of over one hundred charter members had beenreached.

Because the newly formed Society lacked a permanent meeting placeor building they promoted their efforts with displays at the Greece Town Mall,the Greece Grange,the library and schools. The members participated in localparades on floats hand constructed by volunteers. The early Strawberry Festswere held at The Newcomb Homestead on Newcomb Rd.
