What is ECDC?
A European Union Agency which : • is a member of the European
Union (EU) family of ~ 22 agencies
• covers EU 27, EEA/EFTA countries, and as of 1 January 2008 integrating Turkey, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Croatia
“An independent agency, named the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control” (EC Regulation 851/2004) •started four years ago, now operational in every aspect of its mandate
What is the role of ECDC?

Identify, assess & communicate current & emerging health threats to human health from infectious diseases (this a ‘risk assessment’* role and an ‘advisory role’ to the EC and MS on risk management issues)
Detection of health threats: surveillance and epidemic intelligence;
Provide evidence-based scientific opinions/advice;
Strengthen preparedness and response
– Operate the early warning system and response
– Support MS in outbreak investigation and RA;
– Build capacity through training
Health Communication(in the domain of infectious diseases)
* no risk management is done directly by ECDC
What is ECDC’s independence?
ECDC is independent in its technical and scientific work which has to be evidence-based -> no influence from any side (e.g. commercial companies, burocracies, national or EU level politics)
In all other aspect of the work, we are part of the EU family: administration, communication, partnership with EU institutions, etc.
