Regional Tectonic of Yemen
Basement :Formed during various periods of the Precambrian
consolidation of the Afro-Arabian cratons.
Mesozoic rift basins:Formed during various stages of Gondwana breakup.
Cenozoic rift basins:
Formed as a result of the separation of Arabia from
Africa by the opening of the Red Sea and the Gulf of
Aden.

Paleo-highs affected the Mesozoic basins
Mahfid basement separates the Siham-Ad-Dali’ and Sab’atayn basins,
Jabal Al-Aswad High is located between the Hajr sector of the Sab’atayn basin and Balhaf basin.
Jahi-Mukalla High divides the Sab’atayn and Say’un-Masilah basins
Fartaq High separates the Say’un-Masilah basins from Jiza-Qamar basin
control the distribution and thickness of sedimentary facies .

14 GEOL 502-132- Term report
Conclusion
Two major tectonic events formed the tectonic
evolution of Yemen.
Mesozoic rift > Breakup of Gondwana
when the Mesozoic rift basins were formed.
Cenozoic rift > The opening of Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
when the Cenozoic rift basins were formed.
Regional cross-sections show thick skin deformation and reveal
some structures such as grabens, horsts, half grabens, listric
faults, & antithetic faults.
At this time the Say’un-Masilah and Sab’atayn basins are the
hydrocarbon producing basins in Yemen.
