The Fish Factory ProjectReviving an abandoned fish factory in Iceland

Mupimup Iceland (Rosa Valtingojer and Zdenek Patak)MA Communication Design Central Saint MartinsTutors: Anne Odling-Smee and Victoria Salmon

Context: Stödvarfjördur, a former fishing town on the east coast of Iceland. The fish factory had once been the heart of the thriving fishing industry in but has stood empty for many years. The consequent lack of jobs and opportunities caused people to move away. Through this project it is transformed into the hub of village life. The hope is that the project will attract young people and creative professionals to live in the village, which has seen large-scale depopulation over the past decade. With many other villages having disused fish factories, the centre can serve as a model for regeneration all over Iceland and beyond.

PROJECT :Opportunity for the new vision of a self-sustaining Creative Centre. Creating new jobs and possibilities with and for the community. Restaurant. Café. Museum. Shop. Artist in residence. Fish market. Workshops. Events.

Deign Role: to detect the needs of the community in Stödvarfjördur, give them a voice and the possibility to design solutions with them. The most important thing is to keep the essence of the Icelandic town while being open to the rest of the world. The collaborative effort is the essence of this project.
