Skype (pronounced /skaɪp/)

Software application that allows users to make voice calls over the Internet

The network is operated by a company called Skype Limited, headquartered in Luxembourg and partly owned by eBay

Calls to other users within the Skype service are free, while calls to both traditional landline telephones

& mobile phones can be made for a fee using a debit-based user account system

Skype has also become popular for its additional features which include

instant messaging

A videophone is a telephone with a video screen, and is capable of full duplex (bi-directional) video and audio

transmissions for communication between people in real-time.

It was the first form of videotelephony, later to be followed by videoconferencing, webcams, and finally telepresence.

At the dawn of the technology, videotelephony also included image phones which would exchange still images between units every few seconds over conventional POTS-type telephone lines,

essentially the same as slow scan TV systems.

Currently videophones are particularly useful to the deaf and speech-impaired who can use them with sign language, and also with video relay services to communicate with hearing persons.

Videophones are also very useful to those with mobility issues or

those who are located in distant places and are in need of telemedical or tele-educational services.

Skype Video conferencing between two users was introduced in January 2006

for the Windows and Mac OS X platform clients

Skype 2.0 for Linux, released on March 13, 2008, also features support for video conferencing

Skype Version 5 beta 1 for Windows, released May 13, 2010, offers free video conferencing with up to 5 people

Skype for Windows, starting with version 3.6.0.216, supports "High Quality Video"

with quality and features, e.g., full-screen and screen-in-screen modes,

similar to those of mid-range videoconferencing systems

Preparing to Skype

Both parties must have current Skype accounts & broadband connectivity

Have a pre-production meeting prior to the Skype event via telephone, email etc.

Arrange a test beforehand if needed

Minimum Hardware Requirements•1 GHz processor and at least 256 MB of RAM.•Webcam•Microphone/speakers

Most currently available laptops have built-in webcams, mics and speakers. Note that webcams and mics vary widely in quality and price.

Purchase headset if you want to improve audio quality. If you are using software to record your Skype session then headsets are necessary.

FYI HD webcams are now available, and you can even Skype from some TVs!

Internet Connection

Two way communication using your computer requires uploading your video/audio to the Internet.

Most Internet providers offer adequate bandwidth to download content from the Internet.

When it comes to providing bandwidth to upload to the Internet they aren’t as generous.

General Bandwidth Requirements (current video standards for video conferencing)

Remember We are talking about Upload Bandwidth. Also note that we are talking about requirements on Both Ends!

Skype Bandwidth Requirements (as taken from their website)

For Skype-to-Skype video calling (both normal & high quality), 500 Kbps is recommended. If you want to send & receive HD video you'll need around 1.2Mbps

The Important Things to Remember! Skype operates using the lowest hardware capabilities of both systems.

If you want to use HD video, then you need HD cameras at both ends.

Skype will work at lower bandwidths. It just won’t work well.

And it’s upload bandwidth.
