• The Godrej group is an Indian conglomerate headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

• It was founded by Ardeshir Godrej and Pirojsha Godrej in 1897.

•  The group is headed by Adi Godrej and his brother in law and cousin, nadir Godrej and Jamshyd Godrej.

• Since its establishment , the Godrej group has grown in India from the days of the charkha to nights at the call centres.

ARDESHIR GODREJ

1894 – Lawyer (Fresh out of College) : Gave up the law and joins as assistant to Chemist.

1895 - Investment of Rs 3000 Started Manufacturing “Surgical Equipments”

1895 – Vision on “ Made in India “ products.

1897 -Started Manufacturing Locks under “Anchor” Brand. Godrej group came into existence.

1902 - Godrej makes its first Indian Safe.

1910 –Boyce Join hands with Ardeshir.

Boyce decided to leave the company. But the name was retained.

Godrej company rechristened as : “Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company”.

Pirojsha Godrej

1928 - May 1- Ardeshir transferred the ownership to his brother Pirojsha.

Pirojsha Godrej carried Ardeshir Godrej’s dream forward making Godrej group- a global multi-business

• Adi Godrej- undergraduate degree from MIT and his MBA from the MIT Sloan School of Management,

• After his return to India, he joined the family business.

1897: Ardeshir Godrej learns the first lesson of success: failure.

Two of his businesses went bust.

Then he started lock company

1918: Godrej went against tide of Raj and launched first animal fat free soap

A revolutionary act

1923: Made first Almirah.

It has been timeless icon of a father’s love for his daughter.

It’s the wedding present that says “ keep my daughter safe, You are my Gold”

1944: A truck carrying cargo caught fire and explosion took away lives and destroyed buildings.

One of the few things to survive were Godrej safes.

So if Godrej says they can withstand biggest explosions they really mean it.

1951: The Election Commissioner asked the Godrej to make ballot boxes for the free India’s first election.

Within days 1.7 billion ballot boxes were made.

1958: first refrigerator

1972: first employee count: 12000

Today it’s 26,000

1986: Launched hair dye.

About 700,000 numbers of which are sold daily.

1997: Godrej group turned 100 years old.

2008: helped Indians to go over the moon.

Help in development of launch vehicle and lunar orbiter for Chndryaan-1(India’s first unmanned mission to moon)

2009: Planet Godrej, a sky scrapper in Bombay.

In April 2013 Godrej was awarded the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at The Asian Awards. 

He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India's third highest civilian award, in 2013.
