WHAT IS A CONCENTRATION CAMP?
The term concentration camp refers to a camp in which people are detained or confined, usually under harsh
conditions and without regard to legal norms of arrest and imprisonment that are acceptable in a constitutional
democracy. In Nazi Germany between 1933 and 1945, concentration camps were home to many, many imprisoned
Jews.

DEATH CAMPSJews were sent to death camps for the sole purpose of being killed. The Nazis killed Jews by forcing them into gas chambers, rooms filled with Zyklon-B or carbon
monoxide. The gas would fill the room and suffocate those inside. The picture to the right shows the gas chamber at Dachau. You can
see the places in the ceiling where the gas was released.
