Inter-hotel and restaurant chef competition
Medals were shining at Gulf Chef School as winners of the inter-hotel chef competition
proudly showed them off, winners of the three monthly competition held at NHI under
the auspices of Oman Chefs Guild.
The competition is based around a mystery box concept where competitors have a
time limit to prepare a three course menu from its contents. The judges for the most
recent competition were Oswald Joachim, Executive Chef for Oman Convention
Centre, and Neil Sequeira, Executive Chef at Golden Tulip Hotel.
Each team prepare two dishes that are served to customers in NHI's Classroom
Restaurant and to the judges. The winning prize money amount is RO300 which is
generously sponsored by Oman Chefs Guild. Congratulations to the first place winners
for this competition - Jyala Deepak Singh, chef at Uttam Mondal and Sanjog Kumar,
waiter from the Shangri-La. The second place winners were from Al Loomie and third
place from Sheraton.
Airport College International offers e-learning
Global air traffic is expected to double in the next 20 years, creating millions of new
jobs. The aviation industry faces a huge challenge to deliver training for the new
workforce. The industry needs to attract new talents by providing new training
methods and forward-looking career paths.
"The aviation sector is growing and Oman is pushing ahead with efforts to boost
tourism and cargo numbers through the expansion of its aviation infrastructure and
provide a significant number of new jobs in the near future. Together with our partner
NHI, we can provide high quality and efficient training solutions," said Airport College
International CEO, Pertti Mero.
"The aviation sector has been boosted by government investments and a stronger
sector has the potential to benefit trade, SMEs, tourism and logistics and can support
the promotion and awareness of Oman on a global scale. We strongly believe that
we ca help airlines, ground handling companies, logistics service providers as well as
job seekers to save on training costs without compromising the quality of training," said
Robert MacLean, NHI principal.

Adil Abdullah Qader Al-Zadjali
I joined NHI as an aviation student employed by Oman
Air on the NVQ program which I thoroughly enjoyed. NHI
is a great place to train and is dedicated to training and
especially young Omanis. The training immerses you in
an on job environment with its live restaurant, kitchens
and accommodation available to the public, so
reception works like you’d be working in a hotel. This on
the job style training ensures it prepares you to go
straight from training into the workplace.
Whilst at NHI I received training on the aviation industry, tourism and had English
classes. Once I had completed my training I joined Oman Air as a check in
operator at Seeb International, moving on into a promotion with Emirates Airline
after two years as customer service agent.
After 10 years with Emirates I completed my BBA and returned to Oman Air being
promoted to a district sales manager position for one year and then transferred to
the Holidays Department as a holiday sales manager.
I have now been working with Oman Arab Bank since 2015 in their sales
department. I owe a lot to NHI for my training and career progression.
I trained at NHI in 2006 as a travel student, completing
the IATA course. I was one of the luckiest to be selected
out of thousands who applied. I found the environment
in NHI was warm and welcoming and the teaching
methods, encouraging team work, have really helped
me throughout my career journey. The fact that you
get paid while you train and that at the end you are
awarded international qualifications makes NHI’s
training courses so much more accessible and feasible.
Sharifa Al Busaidi
After completing my IATA course I started working for National Travel and Tourism
(NTT) in the tours inbound department for one and a half years as a tours
consultant. I was then successful in securing an internal transfer to the outbound
holidays department and worked there for five years. Following this I was
promoted to a senior holidays consultant position. I had very rich experiences
working in these different departments meeting lots of different people from
different countries and gave me opportunities to travel abroad.
After spending almost six years in NTT, I got an offer for a position which was a
promotion with Oman United Agencies. Soon I was promoted to the position of
holidays supervisor which I have held for the past five years.
I'm so proud to be one of the successful students of NHI and am thankful to all of
my dedicated instructors for all their hard work and support. I would highly
recommend that anyone interested in joining the hospitality industry to train at
NHI.
