The month of September was tough, but October is much more excit-
ing. Getting used to being a senior, planning the next board meeting,
getting homework done, working on the district project, completing
college apps, and preparing for Governor trips... Phew! This is only a
piece of the pie! Even though September was really busy, we still got
a lot of things done.
Last weekend I had the honor of being a Key Leader Student Facilita-
tor at Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp. Despite having slept little prior and dur-
ing the event and I having to go to work right afterwards, I managed
to have a leadership experience that would last a lifetime. I’ve had
many leadership experiences- from being the Vice President of a Ja-
maican Key Club to being Governor of the Pacific Northwest District.

But during that weekend, I got the opportunity to become more than a
leader. Sharing my skills, experience, and knowledge with these young
Key Leaders. My personal mission was to become a teacher.
Working with the Twirling Cupcakes (my neighborhood), and seeing
those girls and one guy (Andy Nguyen aka “Lotion Boy”) take charge
and grow into leaders brought tears to my eyes. I have to thank all the
adult volunteers, the students, and my new friends for making last
weekend a new page in my current chapter of my life as Governor.
The District Project/Project Educate team and I have been working like
crazy to promote the project, raise money, and reach our fundraising
goal. A couple things we’re finalizing include: educational materials, a
new blog--to keep members up to date of current happenings, the
new website--to provide the tools and informations about the project,
our new club competitions, and marketing materials. Because the pro-
ject is the first of it’s kind, we’re offering awards that have never been
offered before. We’re committed to highlighting the work our clubs are
doing to make this year’s district project a success.
What’s next for me? Next I will be away from home for two weeks in a
row to chair our next district board meeting (Tri-K) with the other PNW
Kiwanis Family district boards here in Portland, Oregon, and to attend
the 2012 Kiwanis Family Conference in Asheville, North Carolina. I am
also traveling to the Seattle Area to speak with Kiwanis Clubs about
project:EDUCATE in November with our District Administrator, John Jay,
and will be taking a trip to Vancouver, BC in December! I’m so excited
to be back in Vancouver!!

JAMAICA Jamaica is known for its blue Caribbean beaches, rich blue mountain cof-fee, Bob Marley, the fastest man in the world - Usain Bolt, and its food,
but people often fail to recognize the hardships and troubles the people face in this ‘paradise’.
OUR DISTRICT PROJECT This year’s district project is Project Educate. The goal of Project Educate is to improve the quality of education in Jamaica, one school at a time.
It’s the first of its kind - a joint project between the Pacific Northwest Dis-trict and the Jamaica District.
OUR GOALS Our monetary goal is $30,000; with this money we will help aid three dif-ferent schools in Jamaica. Our goal is to provide library equipment, such as computers and printers, and classroom supplies, such as pencils and notebooks. Another goal is to rebuild the library of Wakefield Primary
School, which was burnt down in April. Additional contributions include funding the tuition of two students for the 2013-2014 school year.

Why did you join Key Club?
I joined Key Club because one of my
close friends was chartering it, but I stayed
on because I felt that the mission state-
ment had a lot of potential.
What’s your favorite thing about being a
president?
My favorite thing is getting to engage high schoolers in their com-
munity, and helping them find their passions as a volunteer. Key
Club has limitless possibilities as a platform for service and I love be-
ing able to spread that.
What do you like about this year's district project, project:EDUCATE?
Education is essential to close the global poverty gap, and Project
Educate will provide resources to help kids receive the education
they deserve, and subsequently more opportunities.

Since 1994, Key Club International has been a proud par-
ticipant of Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF.
By collecting donations for UNICEF through the Trick-or-Treat
for UNICEF program over the years, Key Club has raised more
than $5 million!
This year Key Club Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF funds will sup-
port The Eliminate Project, which will provide resources
and advocacy to support elimination of maternal and
neonatal tetanus with UNICEF and partners.
