Anzac Day
Anzac Day is a very special day both
in Australia and New Zealand. The
anniversary of the Anzac day is
probably Australia's most important
national occasion. It marks the
anniversary of the first major military
action fought by New Zealand and
Australian forces during the First
World War. On 25th of April 1915,
forces landed on Gallipoli so 25th of
April became the day on which
Australians remembered the sacrifice
of soldiers who had died in the war.
Many people think 25th of April is the
day the Anzacs suffered great loss of
life at Gallipoli but they were not
evacuated until December of the same
year. In 1916, The 25th of April was

Ceremonies.
officially named as Anzac Day. In 1917,
the word Anzac meant someone who
fought at Gallipoli but later it came to
mean any Australian or New Zealander
who served or fought in the First
World War. During the 1920s, Anzac
Day became established as a national
day of commemoration for the
Australians who had died during the
war. Every state observed some form of
public holiday on Anzac Day for the
first time in 1927. By the mid-1930s, all
the traditions and rituals we today
associate with the day were firmly
established as part of Anzac Day
cu l ture . Anzac Day was f i rs t
commemorated at the Memorial in
1942, since then, it has been
commemorated at the Memorial yearly
Every year, the ceremony takes place at
10:15 am in the presence of people
such as the Governor General and the
Prime Minister at the Australian War
Memorial. The short dawn service
starts with a drum roll. A typical Anzac
Day ceremony includes first of all an
introduction then respectively the
National Anthem, hymn, prayer, an
address, laying of wreaths, a recitation,
the Last Post, a period of silence, either
the Reveille or the Rouse, and the final
act is that of a drum roll again. As a part
of ceremony, families put red poppies
beside the names of relatives on the
Memorial’s Roll of Honour but Poppy
Day itself is usually the Friday before
Anzac Day. After the dawn service, a
traditional ‘rum and coffee’ is served
along with an Anzac Biscuit to give
people a chance to talk and reminisce.
The 25th of April 2015 marks the 100th
anniversary of Anzac Day. Thousands of
people attend Anzac Day at Gallipoli
each year and Turkey is expecting over
100,000 participants at the Anzac Day
Dawn services in Gallipoli Turkey in
2015. A combined Dawn Service is held
at Anzac Cove .

Kidney Disease Screening - a UTas Research Project. Utas is researching a screening process which can be done at community pharmacies throughout Tasmania, to see if kidney disease can be detected early in people at risk of developing kidney disease. Utas is recruiting 600 participants throughout Tasmania for this study and about 20 from the Lilydale district.
Some of the risk factors for developing kidney disease are;
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Heart disease or stroke
Obesity
Smoking Family history of kidney disease. If you are interested in participating, call in to the pharmacy and ask for an information sheet
for more detailed information. You may be eligible for the study if you are aged between 50 and 74, have one of the above risk factors, and have NOT been previously diagnosed with kidney disease.
The screening test at the pharmacy is free, takes about 20 minutes and you will need to bring your medicines or a list of medicines with you. What is kidney disease?
Kidney disease occurs when the nephrons inside your kidneys, which act as blood filters are damaged. This leads to the build up of waste and fluids inside the body. Kidney disease can sometimes lead to kidney failure. If kidney disease is found early, medications and lifestyle changes can increase the life of your kidneys. If the kidneys fail completely, they don't often recover. Kidney failure, also known as end-stage kidney disease, occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to adequately remove waste from your blood and control the level of fluid in the body.
People with kidney failure need dialysis or a transplant to stay alive. Kidney failure can happen suddenly or gradually. If you have kidney disease, it does not mean that you will develop kidney failure. One in ten
Australian adults aged 18 and over (approximately 1.7 million people) has at least one sign of chronic kidney disease and over 20,000 receive dialysis or a kidney transplant for kidney failure.

10 Facts about the ANZACs
1. ANZAC is an abbreviation of The Australian and
New Zealand Army Corps.
2. April 25, 1915, was the day the ANZACs landed
on the Gallipoli Peninsula, now known as ANZAC
Cove to battle the Turkish army during WWI.
3. More than 11,000 ANZACs died on the
Gallipoli Peninsula, despite only being there for 8
months.
4. The original ANZAC biscuit was known as an
ANZAC wafer or tile and was part of the rations given
to ANZAC soldiers during World War I. They were
included instead of bread because they had a much
longer shelf life.
5. ANZAC was originally named the Australasian
Army Corps. However protests from New Zealand
led to the adoption of Australian and New Zealand
Army Corps. Administration clerks found the title too
long and adopted the abbreviation of ANZAC.
6. Despite being affiliated with Australia and New
Zealand, ANZAC included officers from Britain, Ire-
land, India, Zion, Ceylon and the Pacific islands.
7. “Lest We Forget” is a phrase popularised in
1897 by Rudyard Kipling, which was adopted as the
final line of The Recitation along with the
"Ode of Remembrance", taken from Laurence Binyon's
"For the Fallen".
8. The last surviving ANZAC, Alec Campbell, died
on May 16, 2002 – A State Funeral was held in Hobart.
9. The ANZAC Bridge was given its name on
Remembrance Day in 1998 to honour the memory of
the ANZACS. An Australian Flag flies atop the eastern
pylon and a New Zealand Flag flies atop the western
pylon.
10. Today, the ANZAC Battle Group is an active
battle group of Australian and New Zealand units.

LILYDALE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
MEETING 12TH MARCH 2015
6 people attended this meeting. We would like to see
more attending as it involves things that go on in our
district. We are here to help with crime incidents
reported to Police and try to keep our area safe from
any crimes.
Apparently the proposed bike track for our area is
supposedly going ahead and to start June/July. No
public meeting has been held yet. We feel that it will
take security away from this place and farms will be
affected. If the Public meeting is to be held, we ask
that you attend and have your say on this matter.
The poultry farm at Lalla got a license to go ahead.
Police Report : Between 5/2/15 and 4/3/15 - there
were no criminal matters reported. The only reports
were related to abandoned vehicles.
Guest Speaker for our next meeting will be Tania
Rattray.
We ask that you have questions ready to ask her about
things going on in our area. e.g. Bike Track, Senior
Citizen Building, old Day Care Centre,
Crossroad intersection etc. and any other things that
you wish to know about that she may be able to help/
do for us.
Next meeting: April 9th at 7.30pm at Fire Station
(Note starting time due to Daylight Savings time will
be finished.)
CWA Report
We were pleased to welcome three guests to our
March meeting and four of our seven members
attended.
An invitation to attend East Launceston Branch’s
birthday afternoon tea was received and the Northern
Group Forum is to be held at Scottsdale Uniting
Church Hall on 17 March.
For our 76th birthday luncheon on 1st April it was
decided we would go to the Lavender Farm.
After our meeting a crafty time was had learning to
make zippy purses and enjoying a shared lunch.
FROM THE LION'S DEN
What a busy month it has been in the Lion's den!
We hosted the Regional Final of the Lions Youth of
the Year where we had the pleasure of listening to an
inspirational group of young people and
congratulations to the overall winner Grace Williams,
18 who will now compete at State level. Special thank
you to Christine Bush who was one of the judges on
the night.
In March we also hosted a joint Lions Beyond Blue
public presentation where issues of depression and
anxiety were addressed.
If you attended the March monthly market at the
Memorial Hall or the local Landcare field day you
would have seen us wielding the tongs and keeping the
sausages sizzled (a major fundraiser for us). Raffle
winners were Tammy Jones of Underwood and
Christina Butler of Newstead who we hope enjoy
spending their voucher at the local shops. Look out
for our future fundraisers for Cystic Fibrosis and
Childhood Cancer. If you have any trash or treasure
you no longer require why not box it up and donate it
to the Club to sell at the monthly markets?
Our Club is always looking to recruit new members
and is conducting a membership drive over the next
few months - feel free to approach any member to
talk about what we do or we might even approach
you! More details, phone Natalie 63951515.
As always we still have beautiful cow manure of sale -
why not put in an order for your autumn/winter
plantings? Phone Stephen 63951323 with your order.
A carpet layer had just finished installing carpet for a lady.
He stepped out for a smoke, only to realize that he had lost
his cigarettes. In the middle the room, under the carpet,
was a bump.
"No sense pulling up the entire floor for one pack smokes,"
he said to himself. He proceeded to take his hammer and
flatten the hump.
As he was cleaning up, the lady came in. "Here," she said,
handing him his pack of cigarettes. "I found them in the
hallway."
"Now," she said, "if only I could find my sweet little
hamster."

Senior Citizens Club
March has been a busy month for our members with preparations for our huge Easter Raffle which was drawn on
March 27th at the Clubrooms. Winners will have been notified.
These major raffles are important to the Club and help pay for ongoing maintenance, hefty insurance premiums
and commercial rate water and electricity.
Residents of Lilydale may not be aware of the excellent facilities we have for hiring to the Community.
A good kitchen, 2 large seating/dining areas and B.Y.O. liquor requirements. Suitable for birthday parties, club
meetings and sadly, we also cater for farewells to our longtime friends.
We were able to enter 1 team in the Ravenswood Carnival on 18th March and surprise, surprise they had a good
win from the Home Team and St Helens. Perth Carnival was March 25 with 3 of our 4 players from
Lebrina.
Hope we had a good result but enjoying the social outing is more important. We would welcome more players
from outer districts of Lilydale to join us. Happy Easter to everyone.

Bringing Back the Memories
This month is a little bit about Lilydale 125 years ago. This article appeared in the Daily Telegraph (Launceston) on the
5th June, 1890. As Lilydale correspondents do not appear to be plentiful just now, perhaps a few lines may find a place. Lilydale must
be looking up, to judge by the new buildings which are in progress, not the least conspicuous being Messrs Bardenhagen and Love’s new sawmill, and there are also
several private buildings in the course of erection. Monday, the 26th inst., being a public holiday, the Wesleyans decided to have a big day to celebrate the laying of the foundation stone of their new church, and as it proved fine
a large number of Launceston friends supplemented the local friends, and at 1.00pm assembled to witness the event, which was kindly performed by Mr Wm. Sidebottom, MHA,
who declared the stone “well and truly laid” and was followed by the Rev. F. Neale, of Launceston, who made an exceedingly appropriate speech. He was followed by the by
the Rev. G. S. Lloyd, Mr Frank Archer, and other gentlemen. Donations towards the building fund were then invited, and liberally given. Mr Sidebottom heading the list
with 10 pounds, nearly 30 pounds laid on the stone. After the ceremony all adjourned to the hall, were an abundance of eatables had been provided by the ladies, and full justice
was done to the good things. The rest of the day was devoted to various games, in which young and old thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Messrs Bardenhagen and
Proctor were to the fore in providing entertainment for the little ones, and succeeded in getting up a long programme of juvenile sports, consisting of Consolation Stakes. As the
evening wore on, the lights in the Mechanics Institute warned us that the concert was about to commence, and, going over, we secured seats and were treated to a splendid
programme of vocal and instrumental music, interspersed with recitations and speeches. The new organ kindly given by Mrs Gibson was used for the first time, and proves to be a splendid instrument. The programme was a long one, and
where all did so well it is scarcely fair to particularise, but I cannot pass Mr Von Bibra’s splendid performance as soloist and accompanist, in which he fairly brought down the
house. Master John Orr, of Underwood, electrified us with his recitations, and the Underwood choir gave some excellent selections.
To be continued:
Question: What is referred to as ‘Consolation Stakes’?, this
is a new one for me.

Save our Poles
Lilydale Mural Painted Poles.
I am not sure if you realise how many people stop to look at the poles throughout the township. This means the
local businesses benefit from the passing tourists and hence this also means that we can keep a grocery store,
chemist, several food outlets, newsagent, hotel, post office, doctor, service station and hardware functioning. The
local bed and breakfast places, the vineyards and gardens also benefit. How much easier is it to call in to Lilydale
rather than to drive into Launceston. Do you realise it costs us approximately $13,000 to maintain these pole
over a 10 year period. The last paint renovation is only 3 years old and already some of the poles need attention.
(the replaced poles by Hydro have not weathered well, some cars have damaged some of the poles etc.) the
poles need to be in good condition to attract people to stay and look .
How you can Help: Several businesses, and some individuals have committed to paying $50 a year towards
the up keep of the poles. Those of you who have please realise that the donation is now due for 2015. If there
are other members of the community who enjoy the poles and would like to see them maintained we would be
very grateful for any donations to this purpose. If you pay by cheque please make it out to Tasmanian Regional
Arts and cash donations are gratefully accepted. This is a tax deductible donation.
Obviously this is an ongoing fund raising problem and we are trying to make sure we can maintain the poles to
the fantastic standard they were after the latest renovation.
Please help if possible.

What a delicious home cooked afternoon tea! In fact
the afternoon teas are always so good that we are now
calling the musical concerts the “Afternoon Tea
Concert.” What better way to have a pleasant
afternoon than to enjoy a talented musical recital and
have a delicious afternoon tea whilst meeting the artists
and friends. This is what happened on March 15th at
North Lilydale.
The Nicholas Tolputt (countertenor) and Amanda
Hodder (pianist) concert was fantastic. Everyone who
attended thoroughly enjoyed Nicholas’s fantastic voice
accompanied by the talented Amanda Hodder.
A terrific concert held before a scenic view looking out
to the northern coastline. We are very fortunate and
appreciate being allowed the use of Catherine and
David’s beautiful home for these events.
To all our members, may I please remind you that your
membership subs are now due. This membership not
only brings the information of all our coming events but
it also gives you a member’s entrance for the concert
fee. As we have several concerts planned for the year
please join up and receive your discount.
In February we had the AGM for Lilydale Arts and
many thanks are given to all the position holders who
agreed to continue for the coming year. This allows us
continuity and effective planning for the future. The
main position holders are as listed below and should
anyone wish to join us or contact us please do so

Lilydale & District Youth/Junior Football
Training for the 2015 season has started with a good
roll up of Under 9’s and Under 11’s. Early indications
are that, when possible, the older boys will do most of
their training at Scottsdale as a team.
Lilydale will continue as part of the Scottsdale Magpies
for another year. This is a partnership that has worked
well to date, proving beneficial to both clubs. Last year
about 20 boys from the Lilydale District played in the
Magpie colours each week. They were spread over
four teams and represented almost a quarter of the
players from the North East.
Scottsdale is aiming to field five teams this year, Under
9’s, Under 11’s, Under 13’s, Under 15’s and Under 16’s.
The Under 16’s could be a problem, it is an age group
that the Development Squads start grabbing the best
players from leaving the battlers who become
discouraged and give the game away. To try and
counter this, the NTJFA tried to increase the age to
Under 17’s but this was defeated. Scottsdale was one
of the clubs which favoured Under 17’s. It is now a
case of wait and see who is available.
In AFL competitions the player’s age is taken as how
old they are on 1st January each year. The starting age
in the NTJFA is 7 years meaning that anyone who turns
7 before the end of the previous year is okay to play
the following year. Allowances are sometimes made
for anyone who misses out by a few days. The young-
est team in the competition is Under 9’s.
At Lilydale we do allow younger players to train with
the Club from time to time. As with all young players,
parental permission is essential. We find that this
allows the young ones to develop at their own pace.
It is recommended that new players, especially some-
one who has not played before, start training now.
Leaving it until the last minute is not fair to anyone.
These families may find that their children struggle to
catch up. Our aim is to get players using both sides of
their bodies but this is difficult when new players keep
turning up each week. No child is refused.
Football is more than kicking and handball but some of
the young ones who have been doing these things since
they could walk have an instinct about what to do.
What you eat - The basic instruction seems to
be that young children should be well fed before playing
sport on a cold morning.
You need to use:
Your brain - Your own personal computer
Your lungs - If you are gasping for breath ease
up and build your lung capacity gradually – also talk to
your team mates.
Your muscles - The power plant. Gradually build
up what you are doing until your reflexes take over.
A lot of the information about children and food as
far as sport is concerned seems to be very disjointed.
Someone who knows what they are talking about
would be handy. There seems to be growing concern
about giving young children high energy drinks. The
original drinks were made for university students in
their late teens and early twenties. Gator Ade –
University of Florida (alligators or gators).
The Club finished last year with $1,150 in the bank.
Scottsdale Club pays all the day to day expenses with
no subs or registration fees. That leaves the Club in
the position of being able to save the money it
receives for future needs.
First game – Sunday, 12 April at George Town
No game on Sunday, 19 April – Sunday game at
Aurora Stadium – Hawthorn vs Western Bulldogs
More information – please come to the Recreation
Ground after school on Thursdays or telephone Don
Pollard on 6395 1288 or Gene Dwyer on 0419
636976.
A blonde was speeding in a residential zone when a local
police officer pulled her over.
The female officer who walked up to the car also
happened to be a blonde.
She asked for the blonde's driver's license.
The driver searched frantically in her purse for a while and
finally said to the blonde policewoman, "What does a
driver's license look like?'
Irritated, the blonde cop said, "Don't be smart!, it's got
your picture on it!"
The blonde driver frantically searched her purse again and
found a small, rectangular mirror down at the bottom.
She held it up to her face and said, "Aha! This must be my
driver's license", then handed it to the blonde
policewoman.
The blonde cop looked in the mirror, handed it back to the
driver and said, "You're free to go. And, if I had known you
were a police officer too, we could have avoided all of
this."
