Pops & Circumstance! The month of June offers lots of opportunities to celebrate. Throughout the month, students of all ages, from kindergarten to college, will celebrate graduation and new beginnings. Dads will be kings of their castles (at least for one day) on the 20th as we honor them on Father’s Day. Be sure to recognize why your dad rocks and make his day a special one.
June 21st brings the official start of summer. School’s out and the fun begins. Whether you’re staying local or traveling afar, check out our summer style tips on page 19. For a daily dose of happenings and hot spots, take a glance at our monthly calendar of events.
Saddleback Memorial-San Clemente is featured on this month’s cover. Recognized as one of the “100 Top Hospitals” by health research organization Thomson Reuters, Saddleback Memorial Medical Center is the only facility in Los Angeles or Orange County to be selected to this elite group. The cover features actual San Clemente residents who have benefitted from their medical services.

Have you tried every diet out there or at least it feels like it? With summer around the corner, you’re wondering what your game plan is to finally get this weight off your body?
I can recall many, many years of making the same unfufilled promise to myself. I’d tell my-self, “This year I’m going to go on a special diet, I will exercise, and I will lose the weight—and I will keep it off.”
On January 2nd, I’d launch into the latest diet craze involving starving, or only eating certain foods, or taking dozens of supplement pills every day, or sometimes all three. It was usually some sort of routine that was sheer punishment!
Sure enough, I’d lose weight, but then I’d start to feel stressed and oppressed by the strict regi-men and would go back to my good old friend—food. It was positively demoralizing each time that I would have to start all over with a new diet and routine. Does any of this sound familiar?
I’ve taken off 92 pounds and have kept it off for more than five years. I have never felt better!
By next year, you too could be just like the many Hungry Heart clients who are at their goal weights and living healthy lifestyles, not because they’re supposed to, or because it’s prescribed by the latest diet, but because they genuinely want to.
Hungry Heart clients no longer deal with the internal struggle and self-sabotage of diet-ing and binging, or make poor food choices. They’ve learned to eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re satisfied, and handle life and their emotions completely independently.
We don’t offer a quick fix or a miracle cure. Our proven system of individual behavioral counseling, hypnotherapy and nutrition coun-seling provides a permanent solution to yo-yo dieting, binge eating, overeating, and poor food choices.
Through our caring approach, clients make slow, steady changes to their thought pro-cesses. This changes how they respond to life, what comes into their lives, and, ultimately, the way they approach food.
diet/bingebreak free of the
I tend to overeat certain types of food.
Once I have a bite of certain foods, my eating may go out of control.
I sometimes worry that I won’t get enough to eat or I’ll never stop eating.
Sometimes the only way to make cravings go away is to eat whatever I am thinking about.
I have gone to unusual lengths to get the food I’m craving.
I overeat when I’m feeling emotions, such as anger, depression, fatigue or looking for comfort or reward.
Many days, I head straight for the refrigerator after work, school, or when I get home from my day’s activities.
I’ve noticed I eat when I’m bored.
For no reason, I will sometimes find that I am extremely hungry.
I am uncomfortable expressing or sharing my feelings.
I would like to be a stronger, more confident person.
After I lose weight and receive positive attention, I will start regaining the weight.
I want to lose weight to please people who are important in my life.
I’m reaching the point where I’m afraid thatI will never lose my excess weight.
I feel bad about my weight whichmakes me feel like a failure.

The next time you or a loved one needs hospital or emergency care, you can rest assured that you’re in good hands at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center. In the five years since Saddleback Memorial took over operations, the San Clemente facility has undergone a cosmetic and technological overhaul. A host of new programs have been introduced and access to resources from Saddleback has made it possible for more specialized medical services, even in an economic downturn. Saddleback Memorial Medical Center has invested in San Clemente in both technology and clinical expertise, while continuing to be a valuable
partner in the community.
Equipment has been updated in almost every hospital department. More than $4 million has been invested in expanding imaging services and diagnostic services including a CT scanner capable of instant cardiac imaging.
Saddleback’s Emergency outperforms industry standards for wait times, which is a critical measure in emergency
medicine. Hospital Administrator Tony Struthers boasts, “Our ER can’t be duplicated, and I would match our staff and physicians with any other. The coordination of care within the ER and other hospital departments is exceptional.” Even though the hospital is viewed as small, the emergency department can handle any case that comes through the door. “The vital element to emergency medicine is getting the patient stabilized as soon as possible,” explains Mark Taub, MD, Medical Director, Emergency
Medicine at Saddleback, “and that is where we excel beyond industry benchmarks.”
The surgical capabilities at Saddleback Memorial in San Clemente offers options that often are not found at other Orange County hospitals. The Orthopedic Surgery Department provides comprehensive diagnostic and surgical services, including total joints, spine and pain management. Dr. William Van de Reis is one of the only surgeons in the area to perform hip arthroscopy, a minimally
invasive procedure that functions to prevent total hip replacements. The hospital has surgeons trained
in bariatric surgery, performing the Lap Band procedure, a less invasive alternative to gastric bypass surgery.

In April, Reuben Warday arrived to the emergency room with severe abdominal pain. Physicians imme-diately diagnosed him with having a life-threatening abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Saddleback Me-morial’s team of specialists were able to operate and repair his AAA. Today, Reuben is on his way to a successful recovery and his wife Sheila is grateful her husband’s alive.

Saddleback delivers several specialized services that are conveniently available for outpatient procedures. Saddleback’s Infusion Center offers patients undergoing infusion therapies, such as chemotherapy or IV antibiotics, the opportunity to receive treatments in a comfortable setting at the hospital without being admitted to the hospital. The MemorialCare Breast Center at the Saddleback Health Center in Talega provides digital mammography screenings, referral services and patient advocacy in a state-of-the-art facility. The breast specialist physicians dedicate their practice to the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. The hospital also opened several new laboratory draw stations so patients can easily provide specimens for laboratory tests.
To meet the primary care needs in San Clemente, Saddleback has established a family practice clinic in Talega, San Clemente Family Medicine. The family practice physicians address primary care needs of patients from pediatrics to seniors. The office accommodates same day and next day appointment options, decreasing the need for time-consuming and costly emergency room visits.
However, quality healthcare is more than just advanced technology. Saddleback has cultivated a patient-friendly environment by redesigning patient rooms, and focusing on “high touch” to complement the “high tech.” Mr. Struthers feels attention to detail and dedication to optimal performance positions Saddleback to address the changes proposed by healthcare reform legislation and critical needs in San Clemente.
For example, staying ahead of the curve, Saddleback Memorial in Laguna Hills was among the first to undergo the medical records transition from written records to digital to coordinate patient
care among multiple doctors. Embedding digital images such as X-rays and MRIs into the patient’s record virtually eliminates duplicate testing. This advancement streamlines diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care, saving valuable time and money for both the patient and the hospital. This technology will come to San Clemente by 2011.
Saddleback Memorial has again been named as one of the “100 Top Hospitals” in the nation by independent health research organization, Thomson Reuters. It was the only hospital in Los Angeles and Orange counties to be named to this elite group. The award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance and operation efficiency.
Saddleback Memorial has a 35-year history of serving South Orange County residents and recognizes the importance of access to quality, compassionate healthcare close to home. Struthers asserts that the hospital is here to stay. “What we’re doing here is working. We’re here when you need us.”
Saddleback Memorial - San Clemente is located at 654 Camino De Los Mares. For more information, call 949.496.1122 or visit memorialcare.org.
Saddleback Memorial strives to maintain close ties with the
community. As the largest private employer and only hospital in
San Clemente, this responsibility is taken to heart. The hospital’s Community Outreach Programs
extend to the entire local community, with CPR Classes,
Mobile Health Screenings and a “Smoking Cessations” program. The hospital also offers various free screenings and community
health lectures throughout the year. They also sponsor the City of San Clemente’s “Fun on the Run” program.
Just last month, Saddleback doctors and nurses donated their time to offer free physicals to area
high school athletes, enabling struggling athletic departments to stretch their strained budgets.
Another exciting outreach project currently in development is the “San Clemente Collaborative.”
This ambitious coalition of Saddleback Memorial,
San Clemente Presbyterian Church, Family Assistance Ministries as well as other
organizations has formed with the goal of providing a “one stop shop” community resource center
focused on neighborhoods, youth and healthcare.

Question: Should my child have a sports physical even if it is not required?
—carolyn, san Juan capistrano
ross meDical: Sports physicals are an important aspect of health prevention in children and will help ensure that your child is physically healthy to participate in team or individual activities. During the physical, the healthcare provider will screen for health conditions that may affect your child’s ability to participate in sports. Children 10 years and older should have this health screening because this is usually the time when sports start to become more intense and physically demanding. Yearly physicals will also help the doctor track the health and wellness of your child and is an important aspect in health maintenance in your child’s life.
—monina geda, D.o.
Question: I work out with weights to build muscle, are protein supplements really necessary?
—sam, Dana Point
ross meDical: Most of us take in adequate amounts of protein in our daily diets to supply more than is actually needed by our bodies, even during exercise. For those who work out especially rigorously or are concerned about protein intake, supplements will not cause any harm when used as directed. However, these commercially prepared protein supplements can be very costly and many of them contain little more than milk protein and flavorings. Choosing healthy foods, such as low fat milk and egg whites, are a good source of protein and cost less money.

2010 LINE-UP:
beCoMe A LoCAL diSh MAgAZine FAn on FACebooK f
It’s time, once again, for outdoor summer fun, music and dancing in the beautiful courtyard setting of the Mission San Juan Capistrano. This year’s Music Under the Stars is certain to shine with several popular acts returning to the line-up. The series begins Saturday, June 26th and continues through Saturday, September 4th. Mark your calendars and purchase tickets early to avoid sold out shows.
Kicking things off on June 26th is Face to Face, a Billy Joel and Elton John tribute. On July 10th, a tribute to U2 by Hollywood U2 will take the stage performing music from the entire cata-logue of U2 albums. Hollywood U2 travels inter-nationally and this group of musicians not only looks, but sounds just like the real deal.
The Derek Bordeaux Group: Motown, Soul and R&B, the Right Way returns to the Mission on
July 24th. On August 7th, concert fans will be treated to A Hot August Night: A Tribute to Neil Diamond. The August 21st show features Savor: A tribute to Santana. The series concludes on September 4th with The Fab Four: The Ultimate Tribute to the Beatles.
General Admission lawn tickets are $20 for members and $25 for non-members. Table tick-ets range from $30 to $40 each with reserved seating available for parties of 6 to 10 guests per table. Personal picnics are encouraged, however, caterers, oversized coolers, outside tables and umbrellas are prohibited. Concert gates open at 5:30 p.m. and the music will flow between 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
To learn more about Music Under the Stars or to purchase tickets, visit www.missionsjc.com or call 949-234-1300.

The diverse rhythm section has the skill to present Santana’s complex Latin rhythms, while the drummer’s solid grooves blend per-fectly with the high-energy percussion team of congas, bongos and timbales.

Flock of Seagulls take the Coach House stage on Saturday, June 26th along with When in Rome and Her Voice Remains. The British Grammy Award-winning group is most recognized for their international hit singles, “I Ran (So Far Away),” “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You),” and “The More You Live, The More You Love.”
In the midst of their Spring/Summer Tour, the band will also make stops at Hollywood Park racetrack and Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Flock of Seagulls leader, Mike Score, shared his thoughts about playing songs made famous in the 80’s for audiences today, the Coach House venue and that iconic Seagull hairstyle.
Score’s experience touring has demonstrated that Flock of Seagulls is more than just an 80’s band,”Everyone knows the songs, even the younger kids.” He mentioned that while the music business has changed, having their songs in movies, commercials and video games, like Guitar Hero, gives them a new way to market their music. “It’s a new means of delivery and allows us to introduce the songs to a whole new audience,” adds Score.
While he no longer sports “the haircut,” Score was happy to discuss its origin. “I really needed to do something to get the band noticed...to stand out. Being a hairdresser at the time, I did it up wild. Even if they laughed, it would be good, as long as they talked about us. I guess it all worked out well,” Score laughed. The Seagull haircut is indeed a part of pop culture, being referred to in movies like Pulp Fiction and The Wedding Singer as well as in commercials for Diet Pepsi, Supercuts and XM Radio.
Score and his current Flock of Seagulls line-up look forward to performing at the Coach House. “We’ve played there quite a few times and it’s a classic venue with a very nice stage,” he shared. “The sound onstage there is fantastic and that leads to a tight performance and great sound for the crowd. They know what they are doing there. We always have a good time at the Coach House.”

JUNE 2010 thElocaldishmagaziNE.com
If June Gloom’s got you down, head over to the Royal Hawaiian in Laguna Beach for a healthy dose of Aloha. One sip of their signature Lapu cocktail and a warm smile from their friendly staff are all you’ll need to relax and remember that you do in fact live in paradise.
The Royal Hawaiian has been a mainstay in Laguna since 1947, but a 2006 remodel gave it just the refresher it needed to enhance its notorious tiki charm. It now offers guests larger dining and bar areas, flat screen TVs, great live entertainment and an updated tropical décor. Rest assured though: the fantastic food, laidback atmosphere and accommodating service remain as good as ever.
Royal Hawaiian’s menu offers something for everyone. Whether you’re in the mood for a great burger and fries or a refined steakhouse meal, you’ll find it here, and at reasonable prices.
There are few a menu items I can’t help but recommend. For a delicious beginning, the Garlic Shrimp Bruschetta (only $5 during happy hour by the way) is phenomenal. These jumbo shrimp are perfectly cooked in a creamy wine sauce and served atop delicate slices of toasted baguette. The Ahi Poki, with it’s light yet distinct flavors and soft crunch from chopped macadamia nuts is also amazing, especially when scooped up with a crisp fried wonton.
As for the entrées, the filet mignon, served with an island-inspired steak sauce, is melt-in-your-mouth good. And if you like ribs, you’ll weep with happiness when your lips meet the tangy house-made BBQ sauce that comes slathered all over their baby backs.
Just make sure you save room for dessert, because the Pele (flaming—literally—hot fudge sundae) and the cream cheese brownie á la mode are not to be missed.
Cap the night off in true island-style with a Lapu or a Mai Tai which have drawn locals and visitors to the Royal Hawaiian for decades. Enjoy live bands nightly - every Thursday through Sunday.
