The Test Valley Charity Clay Pigeon
Shoot 2017
The weather Gods again smiled on The
Acorn Shoot on The Compton Manor
Estate on Friday May 5th, not quite as
hot as last year but perfect shooting
conditions with not a rain cloud in
sight. By 7.45am the first of the
competitors had arrived in anticipation
of an enjoyable days shooting, but first
the delicious breakfast bacon baps,
which had again been very kindly
supplied by John Robinson of
Stockbridge. Shooting began at 9.15
am and the 36 teams (4 to a team)
began their morning of shooting up to
a 130 clays from six single clay stands,
a two and four man flush, where the
clays fly in all directions and heights
testing shooting skills to the extreme
and is probably the most fun. The pool
shoot competition was very popular
and keenly contested. There was also
the opportunity for the shooters and
guests to try their hand at an air pistol
range, be ing more fun than
competitive. Greenfields of Salisbury
provided a gun cleaning service with
the £5 charge being donated to the
charities. A very novel and welcome
addition was a stand provided by
Stockbridge Osteopaths thus enabling
team members to relieve tired and
aching bones and joints. This was
provided free of charge and was much
appreciated by all those who took
advantage of the service.
The teams were a mixture of novices
and experienced shots. We also had
three Ladies teams with another fifteen
ladies mixed in with other teams all
competing for the Top Lady Gun
Trophy. The Top Male Gun trophy and
BASC Perpetual Trophy was won by
Connor Gorsuch with a score of 101,
shooting for the Compton Manor
Estates team and The Ladies Top Gun
Trophy was won by Jennie Cartwright
with a score of 80. Phillip Parker won
the Side by Side Top Gun award with
score of 90 and also won the second
BASC Perpetual Trophy.. The Top
Male team award went to ‘The
Chokers’ captained by Huw Stephens
all of whom
had travelled
from Swindon
with a score of
462 . ‘The No
Choke’ team
f r o m
S t o c k b r i d g e
won the Ladies
team prize with
a magnificent
score of 369.
The Pool shoot
was won by
Philip Walford
5
from The Compton Manor Estates
team after a shoot off with our very
own John Perry and Rob Lamb of
Sparsholt. All the Trophy winners
team scores and photographs are now
available on our web site – www.tv-
charityclayshoot.org.uk
During the morning raffle tickets were
sold for a selection of 50 prizes and a
very special separate raffle for an
elegant pair of diamond and pearl
earrings valued at £1400 donated by
Susannah Lovis of Burlington Arcade,
London SW1.
A magnificent lunch prepared by Jo
Brooke Webb and her team of ladies
from the Winchester branch of Cancer
Research UK was served in the huge
marquee. After lunch the trophies were
presented by Amber Hill who
represented GB at the Rio Olympics
just missing out on the Bronze medal
in the Skeet shooting event.
Our auctioneer this
year was none
other than Jim
Davidson who told
me over lunch that
he used to be a
comedian! There
has never been
such a false
statement as he turned the auction into
a cabaret interspersing the selling of
fifteen of the auction lots with hilarious
anecdotes and jokes. As one of the
shooters said to me he was the icing on
the cake of a truly wonderful day. Not
only did he keep everyone entertained
he had a magic knack of getting money
out of peoples wallets as we have
never raised so much at any of our
auctions in the past. He came out of the
goodness of his heart which combined
with the fact that all the auction lots
had been very generously donated by
local individuals, local and
national businesses, as had the
raffle prizes all of which
contributed to the total we
raised of £24000.00p which
will be shared between Cancer
Research UK and the Village
Hall Redevelopment Fund.
Work s t a r t ed on the
arrangements for the day back
in November 2016 and I am
extremely grateful to my committee
who have worked so hard to ensure
this event is the success that it is and is
now held in very high esteem in the
Clay Pigeon Shooting World. This
could not have happened without the
help of so many volunteers on the day,
more than 30 in total, mainly from the
village to whom I am also extremely
grateful. Thank you to you all.
We already have entries and auction
lots promised for next years’ shoot
which will be held again at the Acorn
Shoot on either the 4th or 11th May.

JOHN OF GAUNT AWARD 2017. Most years The Somborne and District Society hold a local history competition
for children in years 3 to 6 who either attend King’s Somborne Primary school
or live in the Sombornes or Ashley. It is hoped that this will make children
more aware of and interested in the history of the area in which they live, thus
inspiring an interest in local history. This year the competition is to be
launched on Tuesday 16th May, with children having until Friday 23rd June
to complete their entries (a period of about 5 weeks, including the half term
holiday). Entries after this date will not be accepted. Judging then will be
carried out before the presentation of prizes on Friday 14th July. The number
of prizes awarded will be at the discretion of the judges .
THE TOPIC
The topic should be historical and preferably based on the local Test Valley
area. Examples of possible topics might include:
Local people like Rev. Richard Dawes, (Founder of King’s Somborne
School), Sir Thomas Sopwith.
Local places of interest (like Horsebridge Railway Station)
Listed buildings/ houses in and around the locality.
Local events of note (such as Celebrating the Coronation, Founding of
King’s Somborne School – remember this year our school celebrates
its 175th birthday!)
HOW TO PRESENT YOUR WORK.
The work collected may be presented in a variety of ways. It does not have to
be pages and pages of written work and should not be merely chunks of copied
work. Entrants should select and use information in their own way. Some
examples of possible formats are:
A picture or photographs labelled with information.
A booklet or scrapbook.
A chart, maps or diagrams with information (no larger than 60cms x
42cms.)
A diary.
A display sheet (no larger than 60cms x 40cms)
A pretend newspaper article.
An interview.
A model, supported by written work (no larger than 40 cms x 20 cms.)
ICT work – must be on a USB stick only
Work should be from an individual only - no joint entries.
(Continued on page 7)
7
No names should be on work submitted but entrants’ name and age should
be put in the envelope provided and attached to the piece of work to ensure
fairness when judging. Children at King’s Somborne school will be given
envelopes in school and should hand in entries to their class teacher by
4.00pm on Friday 23rd June. Those attending other schools may collect an
envelope from the Church and should deliver entries to Carmel House,
Horsebridge Road, King’s Somborne by 4.30pm on Friday 23rd June.

Parish Council notes May 2017
The 2017 Annual Assembly was held
in the Village Hall on 4 May 2017
with 31 people attending.
Minutes of last year’s Assembly were
approved and note made of actions
taken on matters arising which
included the installation of more
public seats in our open spaces,
installation of the all-weather path and
the decision not to purchase a second
speed indicator device until the
current one was beyond economic
repair when the availability and costs
of suitable devices would be
reviewed.
The Chairman gave his report, the text
of which was included in last month’s
Gauntlet magazine. This was followed
by the financial report from the
Responsible Finance Officer. Mr
Storey, as the RFO, highlighted the
audited Annual Return for the year
2015-16, which showed the variations
year on year, and the more recent
financial outcome for the year 2016-
17. In particular, he drew attention to
the proportion of the Council’s
finances, nearly two thirds of the
precept and grants received, which
was invested in the provision of
community services and projects of
direct benefit to the community at
large, the balance meeting statutory
and general administrative costs. He
further reported that the year had
ended with an increase in the
Council’s reserves of £8,365, just over
half of which was unexpended money
on items for which external grants had
been received, and the small 1.95%
increase in council
tax for this new
year produced
only an additional
£670 in the total
£33,698 precepted
which meant that
tight control over expenditure would
need to continue. In conclusion, he
confirmed the Council’s finances
remained on a sound footing and that
we complied with all statutory and
other regulation in their management.
Cllr Brock updated all present on
progress being made on drafting the
Neighbourhood Development Plan,
details of which can be found
elsewhere and Detective Sergeant
Bowen from the Hampshire Police
Cyber Crime Unit gave an interesting
presentation on cyber crime and how
we are all vulnerable to it via our
computers and other electronic
devices. Advice was given on what to
look for and what to do to minimise
the risk and damage caused, in
particular, the need for strong
passwords, ideally of 10 characters or
more and a mix of higher and lower
cases, numbers and punctuation
marks. Websites of further help
included www.antifraud.police.uk;
w w w . g e t s a f e o n l i n e . o r g a n d
www.cyberstreetwise.com.
Mr Dyke raised the concept of the
Parish Council acquiring title to the
land known as Top Field adjacent to
the King’s Somborne recreation
ground, as had happened years ago
with the purchase of the Muss Lane
9
open space to prevent unwanted
development but reluctantly accepted
that the current owners, Test Valley
Borough Council, had a policy of not
transferring land title at least for the
time being.
PCSO Claudia Pattison gave an
overview of crime in King’s Somborne
over the past year including anti-social
behaviour, illegal fishing, travellers
and neighbour disputes (19 in total),
four dwelling burglaries and 14 non-
dwelling eg shed thefts, Cross Stores
break in, criminal damage to Village
Hall and to local notice boards, three
drug related offences, 23 reported
incidents of suspicious behaviour eg
poaching, rogue traders, and thefts,
especially ladies’ handbags from
vehicles. Her message was clear –
remain alert to the possibility of theft
and report any suspicious activity to
the Police.
The Chairman closed the meeting at
9.20pm.
Peter Storey
Clerk to King’s Somborme Parish
Council
This month’s meeting was the
Council’s Annual General Meeting at
which Cllr Rob Lane was elected
Chairman and Cllr Andrew Brock Vice
-Chairman for 2017 -18. Details of
other appointments and the end of year
financial results can be found in the
full set of minutes of the meeting.
The vacancy caused by Judith Evan’s
resignation will be filled by co-option
and any person interested in being
considered should send a short CV to
the Clerk and be prepared to attend the
next meeting on Monday 12 June at
7.00pm in the Epworth Hall at which a
decision will be made.
Cllr Hughes reported that Aster
Housing was increasing its monthly
garage rent from £40 to £80 per month
much to the consternation of some
residents. She also drew councillors’
attention to comments on Facebook
expressing concern at the increasing
speed and volume of traffic on the
Romsey /Stockbridge Road and the
dangers this posed to local people.
Unfortunately, other than expressing
its concern and support, there was
nothing constructive the Parish
Counci l could do as t ra ff ic
management was a Hampshire County
Council responsibility. However, the
Community Speedwatch volunteers
were proving effective but could not
be present all of the time - unless more
volunteers were forthcoming.
Cllr Brock confirmed all the necessary
paperwork had now been completed to
effect the transfer of title for the
recreation ground from Fields in Trust
to the Parish Council and registration
was in hand with the Land Registry.
This title transfer would also now
enable those parties directly involved
to sign the necessary easements
enabling SSE to finally bury the
overhead power supply cables to
minimise the number of power cuts in
the Parish.
Parish Council notes May 2017
10
Cllr Sutton reminded EE customers
loss suffered resulting from power cuts
cutting off their broadband links. He
also confirmed that Virgin Media were
progressing with their plans to
introduce broadband to our area; they
needed 1000 or more clients to sign up
and pay the one-off connection charge.
They would be present at the Fun Day/
Horticultural Show on Saturday 22
July 2017 to talk to people about their
services.
Councillors were pleased to note that
the TVBC Southern Area Planning
Committee had rejected the application
from Gladman Developments to build
up to 60 dwellings at the top end of
Eldon Road.
Negotiations had started with TVBC to
renew the Top Field and John O’Gaunt
field lease and Councillors lent their
support to the community initiative to
enter Channel 4’s ‘Village of the Year’
competition.
The Parish Council has a dedicated
website, as does Neighbourhood
Watch, and can also can be found on
Facebook and Twitter. Much useful
local information can be found on
these and by liking our Facebook page
or Twitter accounts. Please take a
minute to do this.
As always, a full set of minutes can be
found on the Parish Council website
and in both Cross Stores and Martin’s
Corner Shop.
All Parish Council meetings are open
to the public and we look forward to
seeing you there.

So, did you get a kick up the
Freckle?!?
If you joined us at the fantastic
Somborne Sessions with Hat Fitz &
Cara Robinson at the beginning of
May you’ll have some idea what I’m
talking about… It was a wonderful
evening of sparkling Australian/Irish
wit with stunning live music. This
really is what live music is all about
and why we love putting on these
sessions so much. Many days later and
my silly grin is still in place …
So the end of the 2016–17 Somborne
Sessions season is nearing it’s end, but
b e fo re we d o n o ur kno t t ed
handkerchiefs atop our heads and roll
up trousers legs to sit in holey vests on
the beach to while away the summer,
we have one last gig to send us on our
jolly way. June 10th will see the
Buffalo Skinners take to the Somborne
Session stage. Hailing from Sheffield –
a city with a fine music heritage; think
of Def Leppard, Joe Cocker, Pulp,
ABC, Artic Monkeys, The Human
League … and so many others – this
five-piece band have already produced
three cracking albums of original
songs. Benefitting from four strong
songwriters in the group means that
their material is always varied with
influences varying from anything from
the 60’s, Rock ‘n’ Roll, Folk, Blues
and “whatever else they’ve been
listening to recently” all performed
with great harmonies and energy. Over
the past six years the boys have shared
highs and lows, personal space, and an
ex-postal van across England, America
and France. Most importantly they
have shared their songs with anyone
willing to listen. Bob Harris, Steve
Lamacq, Cerys Matthews, Janice Long
and Dermot O’Leary have all been
among them, and have in turn all
played their songs on BBC Radio. This
has led to festival appearances across
the UK including Glastonbury, BBC
Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park, Boomtown
Fair, Wilderness, Tramlines, Camp
Bestival… The culmination of this
impressive record is, of course, King’s
Somborne Village Hall, where they’ll
be performing songs from their back
catalogue and their latest album
“Cease Your Dreaming”.
Tickets are on sale, as always, from
our website
www.sombornesessions.co.uk for a
mere £12 in advance (or £14 on the
night for those of a commitment-
phobic/disorganised/forgetful
disposition).
King’s Somborne Village Hall,
Saturday, 10 June (doors open at 7:30).
Pop it in your diary now! (No, now!
You just know you’ll forget otherwise
…). We’ll also be releasing news of
the Autumn gigs that night – we never
rest here you know…
Links on our website will also take you
to the Buffalo Skinners own website
which has video clips, samples of their
songs and the usual goodies.

Somborne and
District Society Was King William II killed by
accident or was he assassinated? King
“Rufus the Red” (best known as being
the son of William the Conqueror) was
killed on the 2nd August 1100 by an
arrow whilst stag hunting in the New
Forest. The spot is now marked by the
Rufus Stone.
On the 26th April, Gordon Lewis, a
theologian from Totton, challenged the
conventional view that Rufus was
killed accidentally. He claimed that
several of those with him on that
fateful day had good reason to see him
dead. We were told that Purkiss, a
charcoal burner, found Rufus injured
but not dead and that he took him to
Winchester on his cart, via Romsey.
After dying of his injuries, it may have
been the intention to bury him in
Romsey Abbey but Abbess Christina
had good reason to refuse permission.
The King, generally an unpopular man,
had been accompanied by several
colleagues on the hunt. Sir Walter
Tyrell, the man generally regarded as
causing his death, was in fact a superb
archer and therefore unlikely to have
made a mistake. Robert Fitzhamon had
spoken of his wish to see the King
dead and Henry, younger brother of
Rufus and heir to the throne, may have
led a conspiracy. In Winchester, there
was no public mourning and the
King’s body was buried in the
cathedral without a service. Henry was
crowned only three days later and
reigned until 1135.
Much discussion followed this
excellent and thought-provoking
presentation. Thirty four attended.
Members should note that our summer
lunchtime picnic will once again be
held in the lovely garden of Doreen
and John Rowles in Chilbolton on the
10th August. Tickets cost £9.00 each
to include the raffle and will be on sale
both at the June meeting and at the
AGM on the 26th July. If you would
like to attend the picnic but are unable
to attend the meetings, please let me
know.
Our next meeting will be on the 28th
June at the Village Hall when popular
speaker Gerald Ponting visits us once
again. On this occasion, he will talk
about his best-selling book entitled
“Visitors Guide to The New Forest”
which includes its history, the wildlife
of its varied habitats and stories of
interesting, out-of-the-way places
which are well worth a visit. All will
be illustrated with Gerald’s superb
photographs. The meeting starts at
8.00 p.m. but be there by 7.30 p.m. for
a coffee, tea, etc and a chat to fellow
members.

Village Hall News
As promised last month the provisional
plans for the Preschool/ Multi-use
extension are displayed on the V H
notice board, but regrettably we have
not yet applied for planning
permission. There is still some debate
over the design of the perimeter fence
that will enclose the area for the
Preschool play ground that will take up
part of the car park owned by the
Village Hall and will be adjacent to the
new entrance area. The Chair of the
Development committee has met with
Test Valley planning department who
had a positive reaction based on the
plans displayed. Once the management
committee have approved the play-
ground area then we will apply for
planning permission. We have also
received a positive reaction to initial
enquiries about grants for the
construction costs, but neither the
planning permission nor the grant
application can be agreed until we
have a final decision on the actual
plans. This is very disappointing as it
means we will be unable to complete
the building of the extension by 1st
September but we are working
diligently to ensure the planning
problems can be resolved shortly and
that by the time you read this the
planning application will have been
made.
On a more positive note the 9th
Annual Test Valley Clay Pigeon Shoot
was held on the 5th May which was a
great success, as was the latest
Somborne Session held on 6th May
both of which are reported in full
elsewhere in this issue.
The Computer Café sessions continue
on the first and third Thursday of each
month also reported elsewhere in this
issue.

Somborne Sisterhood WI
A good turnout for our Annual
Meeting, and when glasses had been
filled with a welcoming glass of
prosecco the business of the
meeting got underway.
Samantha Boot started the
p roceed ings o f f wi th the
President’s report highlighting all
the wonderful speakers and events
of the last twelve months, and was
followed by the Secretary, Natalie
Ellison, inspiring us with plans for
the year ahead. Finally Treasurer,
Lisa Johnson, gave a low-down of the
Sisterhood accounts for the year.
After the reports visiting WI Advisor,
Helen Carter asked all committee
members to make themselves known
before members voted for their
President for 2017/18. After a secret
ballot Samantha Boot was voted in,
unanimously. Next it was a chance to
hear about, and vote for the 2017 WI
Resolutions – ‘alleviating loneliness’
and ‘plastic soup’. Natalie Ellison
presented each Resolution, reading
both pros and cons before chairing a
brief discussion. Members then voted
in a secret ballot. Both resolutions
came back with a majority ‘yes’ vote
and these will be passed to our link WI
to be taken to the NFWI AGM next
month.
Samantha Boot then highlighted one of
the WI’s 2017 campaigns –
#ShowTheLove (climate change) by
showing a short YouTube film https://

The IT in the Community sessions got

considerably but it is clear there is a
demand for this type of community
activity and we are delighted that our
Borough Councillor, Tony Ward,
agrees. He has presented us with a
TVBC cheque for £84 to help pay the
hire charges for the hall. The Parish
Council are picking up the balance of
the cost for the first 6 months. We are
very grateful to receive such excellent
support from the Parish and Borough
Councils.
There is a considerable amount of
interest in these sessions, and it looks
as though things will go
well for the future.
Any villagers who need
some assistance with their
computer, laptop, tablet,

The Scout Group led the St George’s
Day Parade this year. Our Beavers,
Cubs and Scouts put on their
uniforms, carried their flags and lead
the other Romsey groups through the
town to the Abbey for the St George’s
Day Service.
Those who took part really enjoyed it
and represented the group well. On
May 4 the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts
did a litter pick around some of the
village, we collected 6 bags of
rubbish. This is to help them get their
environmental conservation badge.
Thanks to the environmental services
at TVBC who lent us litter pickers,
gloves and bin bags. We are still in
need of extra helpers and a Cub Scout
leader. It’s only an hour or 2 each
week during term time and you don’t
need to be there each week. We need
extra helpers to keep the group going.

Services for the over 50s This month the minibus takes us to the
seaside!
Do think about coming along for these
trips. It is a lovely day out, and an
opportunity to meet up with old
acquaintances or make new friends.
The trips are subsidised, so they are
good value for money.
The bus is provided by Test Valley
Community Services, the driver is a
volunteer, and Tony Ward has given us
a grant of £500 to support the costs
incurred. However, charges for using
the bus are going up , so we may need
to increase the cost in the future. At the
moment it remains at £6, so it is a
bargain way to get to the seaside!
Remember I am also
here to help with
putting you in touch
with any services you
may need to make your life easier. If
you have any problems or worries, just
phone and I will do my best to help.
I was given the 3 rules for retirement
Get up
Get dressed
Get out
Hope you like them as much as I do!

King’s Somborne WI
The May meeting of the King’s
Somborne W.I. was the last one to be
chaired by Mrs Thelma Blamey who
announced her retirement after
serving 19 years as President and 32
years on the Committee. The W.I. has
flourished under her Presidency and
leadership. It has developed a
friendly, welcoming and caring
atmosphere which is always
commented on by speakers, new
members, and visitors alike.
After a brief general meeting the
proceedings moved on to the AGM
which was opened by Thelma who
welcomed Angela Brice, our W.I.
advisor. Tina Pepper, the treasurer,
reported that the financial was
satisfactory and Linda Aucock, the
secretary, gave an interesting account
of the various lectures and outings
that had taken place during the past
year. Thelma Blamey then spoke of
the pleasure and reward she had
gained from serving the King’s
Somborne W.I. over the last 32years
and she wished members every
success in the future.
Linda then presented Thelma with gift
from the committee and a bouquet
from all the members in recognition
for all her hard work and commitment
over the years.
Angela Brice then supervised the
election of the new committee and
following a ballot Sarah Pennington
agreed to accept the nomination for
President and was congratulated by all
the members.
The meeting ended with discussion of
the two National resolutions. Jo Finch
presented the pros and cons of the first
resolution “Plastic soup- keep micro-
plastic fibres out of the ocean”, and
Janet Ingleson talked about the
second, “Loneliness- How W.I.
members should link with other
agencies in identifying and addressing
loneliness in their communities.” The
majority of the members were in
favour of both resolutions but agreed
that the delegate to the National
A.G.M. could exercise her discretion
on our behalf.
Our next meeting will be held in
the village hall on Wednesday
14th June when Mr. Geoff Burch
will talk on “Ramblings of a
Railway Man”.

Casual visitors to Romsey on the
afternoon of Thursday 4th May were
no doubt a little confused at the
proliferation of orange accessories
sported by individuals making their
way to the Abbey. No-one would have
been more amused by their
bewilderment than the person in
whose honour they were being worn –
namely the late Brian Orange. At the
request of the family many attendees
at the service of Thanksgiving for his
life wore ‘ a little touch of orange’ – a
fact acknowledged by the Rev. Tim
Sledge in his opening words when he
said there could not be a retail outlet
within a ten mile radius of Romsey
which had a single orange item left in
stock! The packed Abbey was proof
of the very high regard and affection
held by so many for Brian, who will
be so sadly missed.
Conducted by the Rev. Tim Sledge,
the service opened with the hymn
‘Eternal Father, strong to save’, after
which Michael Orange read from the
prologue to Chaucer’s Canterbury
Tales. This was followed by what was
in many ways the most touching
reading of the whole service –
‘Grandpa’s Poem’ written and read
beautifully by Brian’s seven delightful
grandchildren – Sophie, Monty, Zoe,
Hattie, Thomas, Gemma and Sam.
T h e p o e m w a s a m o v i n g
acknowledgement of all that these
youngsters had shared with and learnt
from their granddad and the ways in
which their lives had been enriched by
him in so many ways. The family
eulogy was given by Brian’s younger
brother Andrew and the Friend’s
eulogy by Michael del Mar. Harry
Francis, representing Brian’s six
godchildren, read from Ecclesiastes 3
verses 1-15 and this was followed by
a short address from Rev.Tim Sledge.
Brian’s brother-in-law, the Rev.
Antony Grant and Rev. Jonathan
Watkins former vicar of King’s
Somborne read the prayers which
preceded the Lord’s Prayer, after
which the St. John Ambulance Prayer
was read. The service concluded with
the hymn ‘Jerusalem’, the Gaelic
blessing ‘ May the road rise up to
meet you’ and the Organ Voluntary.
All present will have their very own
personal memories of Brian and he
will be remembered with great
affection and sadly missed by so
many, but perhaps the final words
should be those of Brian’s
grandchildren:
So finally we say
Three cheers to Grandpa
PIP PIP Hurrah!
Remembering – with a little touch
of orange.

For most years since the formation of
Hampshire & The Islands Historic
Churches Trust in 1988, supporters
from this Parish have supported the
Trust’s principal fund raising event in
September and raised many thousands
of pounds both for the benefit of the
Trust and the Parish’s Churches.
In the early days our Parish
Coordinator was Christine Mitchell,
who, ably supported by husband Tony,
not only took part themselves but also
induced a number of other people to
participate and/or sponsor those who
did. Sometimes that is difficult
because the event always clashes with
the very popular Romsey Show. The
introduction of JustGiving has helped
enormously.
I am very happy to report that last year
our Parish’s team raised £2,835, the
highest in the County! We will
therefore be attending this year’s
Church Summer Fair and seeking even
more help for this year’s event (on
Saturday 9th September).
The present Coordinator is now in his
eighties and he is looking for a
younger person to leap into the saddle
and take over this less than onerous
role! Please come and talk about it…

Happy 5th
Birthday
Messy Church!
We can’t quite believe it, but our Messy Church has now been running for 5 years! It’s been loads of fun, and we’d
like to say a massive thank you to all those who have
supported us during that time. Here’s to many more years!
Come and celebrate with us at the Methodist Church on
Sunday 18th
June, with an afternoon of family fun from 3.30 – 5.30 pm. As well as our birthday, we will also be celebrating Fathers’ Day, and there will be a small gift for all the Dads and Grandads who come along on that day.
If you’d like to know more about Messy Church, please contact
Pam on 01794 388531 or email pam222@btinternet.com.

This month the Tiny Tots have been
busy learning more about God. We
have been exploring the theme of God
as a shepherd and all the children were
brave enough to wear a blindfold and
explore what it felt like to put their
trust in someone else to be led around
the church. In further sessions children
have thought about listening to God
and the children have been on a listen-
ing walk outside when they found out
that if we listen hard enough we can
hear many sounds, even if they appear
very quiet.
In our craft activities we have pro-
duced sheep masks, finger painted
sheep and paper plate sheep with
curled paper wool! We have also
made special hats with ‘listening ears’
attached to take home and remind us to
listen carefully,
especially to
mummy and
daddy.
If you would like to join us too, please
pop along. We meet each Tuesday
afternoon in term time, starting each
session at 2pm with a drink and biscuit
(for adults as well as children)! We
then enjoy a story and fun activity to-
gether, followed by crafts and end by
3.15 (in time for school pick-up) with
songs and music. If you find your chil-
dren are napping at 2pm, you are very
welcome to join us mid-session. It
would be really great to see you and
your children there!

The Area Dean has the last word Dear Friends
This month is the General Election which is taking place at a profound time,
when the country is seeking an identity to shape itself for the future. This is about
Brexit, but it is about so much more.
We have become more and more apathetic and cynical about politics and
politicians, and the danger is that this overflows into an apathy about democracy.
This is a great gift – travel to many countries around the world and they look on
our democratic institutions with awe and envy, that we have the power and
influence of free speech and to exercise our right to vote without fear or
intimidation.
So how do we make a difference? Last month, the Archbishops of Canterbury
and York issued a letter about the General Election – you can read it in full here
www.churchofengland.org/media/3977056/electionletter_text.pdf but this is an
extract from the end..
“…love, trust and hope, cohesion, courage and stability - are not the preserve of
any one political party or worldview, but go to the heart of who we are as a
country in all of its diversity. An election campaign, a Parliament and a
Government that hold to these virtues give us a firm foundation on which to live
well together, for the common good.”
In addition, contemporary politics needs to work out where faith and the voice of
faith communities has a say and fits in with this. Rather than being a voice of
division, I believe it is a voice of cohesion. Increasingly, faith communities have
a key and defining part to play in social cohesion and establishing community
values alongside our prevailing self-seeking and individualistic culture.
So, I encourage you to come along to the Hustings in Romsey Abbey on June 1st,
where all the candidates for this constituency will be present, have your say and
listen to what is on offer. But above all, I encourage you to vote, and when you
place that X in the box, give thanks to God for those who fought for our liberty.
Give thanks to God for all those who seek to serve in public office and serve us,
and pray that whoever is in government, will work for greater religious literacy,
tolerance, understanding and free expression.
Above all – may those values of love, trust, hope, cohesion, courage and stability
– be at the heart of our new government. It’s a big ask, but we also live in very
tough and challenging times.
