“I. really. thought. it. was. a. candle,”. Robertson.said.

Suttle,.who.is.temporarily.staying.with.Robert-son until his wife is released from a nursing home,said.he.thought.the.smoke.was.from.a.cigarette,.but.as soon as he realized that it was a real fire, he ranto.a.neighbor’s.house.and.called.911.

Robertson, who works at Fuller’s Buffet inLufkin,.said.the.house.was.not.insured.

For.the.sixth.year.in.a.row,.a.Lufkin.Middle School team will compete at theDestination. ImagiNation. state. competi-tion.

Eighth-graders. Lauren. Camp,. Caro-line Zimmerman, Hannah Abner, WillKirby,. Brad. Slusher,. Keeli. Sanderson.and Randi Berger won first place in theregional. competition. March. 5,. earning.them a spot at the state level.

Destination. ImagiNation. is. a. world-wide organization that teaches creativ-ity,. teamwork. and. problem. solving. to.students, according to the organization’sofficial.website.

For many on the LMS team, this wasa.first-time.experience..Camp.and.Zim-merman were both introduced to theprogram.by.friends.

“They told me about all the fun things

they have done,” Camp said. “I thought itwould.be.fun.to.try.”

The group began working in Septem-ber,.dedicating.afterschool.hours.to.plan-ning a skit based on a specific challengepresented.each.year.

The solutions to the challenges pre-sented. by. Destination. ImagiNation. can.have theatrical, structural, improvisa-tional,.scientific.or.technical.focuses.

Camp and Zimmerman said their skitwas.based.on.two.archeologists.looking.for treasure they knew nothing about.

“The. clue. is. ‘DI’. so. they. think. it’s.about the Declaration of Independence,”Camp.said..“Then.they.find.out.it’s.the.Destination ImagiNation trophy.”

A. second. part. of. the. competition. in-cludes an “Instant Challenge” in whichthe. students. must. use. quick-thinking.techniques to provide a solution to thejudge’s.problem.

Zimmerman said they received a per-

fect score in the “Instant Challenge,”landing.the.LMS.team.a.first-place.tro-phy.

LMS.coordinator.Brent.Rich.and.Sh-eryl Townsend provide hands-off sup-port.for.the.students.throughout.the.year.so the kids can learn to work together.

“This.program.teaches.the.kids.real-world problem-solving techniques, cre-ative.thinking.and.teamwork,”.Rich.said..“The best analogy I can think of is if acompany.came. forward.with.a.product.that has glitches, but they need to get itout.in.three.months..That’s.Destination.ImagiNation. The kids learn to relate toeach.other.and.accept.each.other’s.point.of view. It’s a beautiful struggle, but it’sa.blast.”

Angelina County DI teams have along-standing.tradition.of.success.in.the.competition.
