RAINBOW REFLECTIONS
Remember, Remember November 11.
In 2017, 11 November marks the 99th anniversary of
the Armistice which ended the First World War
(1914–18). Each year on this day Australians observe
one minute’s silence at 11 am, in memory of those
who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts.
The wars were fought to preserve the freedom of the
people.
Most of us are not engaged in armed conflict, but
there is certainly a war going on: the agenda of some
is to destabilize our nation by undermining the moral
absolutes upon which society functions in a way that
all human life is valued and treated with respect. The
attack on the definition of marriage; assisted dying
legislations; and the dreadful toll of abortion where
the most vulnerable of all humans are tragically being
put to death by their own poor mothers, who see no
other way.
Convenience has become such a priority in our
attitudes – and I am not excluding myself by any
means! So many quick decisions are made simply
because it is inconvenient to go, or do, or listen….. Of
course the partner of convenience is “impatience” –
how our lives are driven by the need to “get things
done”.
Our hearts need to KNOW the “unforced rhythms of
grace” whereby we work hard, but possess our souls
in patience; whereby we labour, but are not weighed
down by worry; whereby we learn to rest in the midst
of every circumstance and have peace guarding our
hearts and minds.
My quest in 2017 has been to learn the unforced
rhythms of grace. It has been a year where I needed to
find REST in my WORK, as I had set myself the task
of investing my time into our Curves Club to build it
up with the intention to make it a saleable proposition.
I cancelled times away – my usual means of
recuperation – rolled my sleeves up, and set to work.
It has been a tough year – but I have learnt some
important lessons!
Giving one whole day a week to God – doing no work
on my business, or on running my household for that
day, is the greatest act of faith I have yet practiced.
But it has brought me into line with the pattern God
set from the beginning of all time. And it has given me
a blessing on my time throughout the week. I discover
that what I did over here, feeds into what is due to
happen over there, without me having planned it.
For my emotional rest I am learning to practice the
beautiful verse in Proverbs 3: 5-6 “Trust in the Lord
with all your heart and lean not on your own
understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him and
He will direct your paths.” Trust is one of the hardest
things for us to develop – we are trained to be
independent from a very early age, and sometimes our

OPINION - Macarthur has become a
developer free-for-all By Jeff McGill
After 50 years, I have come to the conclusion that: 1. Expensive growth centre blueprints aren’t worth the paper they’re written on. 2. Developers and political parties are good mates, and who can stand in the way of a dollar being made. 3. We are a colony of Sydney, not a part of Sydney. 4. Local quality concerns always get ignored because of a “crisis”, whether it’s a jobs crisis, an economic crisis, or housing crisis. But never, ever an environmental or liveability crisis. As a reporter I was at a big press conference in 1990 that canned all the planned urban growth at Appin and Wilton because our region cops most of Sydney’s smog, due to landforms and wind patterns. I don’t recall the big press conference declaring the landforms or wind patterns had changed, but we now have mass housing estates underway and even hi-rise planned. Poor Campbelltown has lost the city-rural balance. Camden and Wollondilly looks set to be next.

parents unwittingly damage our ability to trust. Our
“own understanding” is just the sum total of all we
have experienced in life seen through the lens of our
own beliefs and attitudes. That is not going to meet
the need of what we are facing today.
AND – I have learnt that it is very important to take
some time off to avoid burn-out. I love that we have
4 weeks annual leave as part of our employment
laws in this land. Being a teacher that is a HUGE
reduction, but being a small business owner it is a
HUGE increase! Wisdom for 2018!
I bless you, dear reader, with rest!
Blessings and love,
Sue Peacock
The monument designer John Hibbert from Cunneen Signs said the project was “close to the heart”. He said he was passionate about World War I and he became interested in the Battle of Beersheba after reading a book. “I used George W Lambert’s painting of the Battle of Beersheba as inspiration after seeing it at the Australian War Memorial,” Mr Hibbert said. He said the memorial used a light sandstone clay wall that was 10 metres long and three metres in height. “The light colour of the stone reflects the stone found at Beersheba,” Mr Hibbert said. “A graphic of the soldiers and horses was then lazer cut from Corten steel. “The graphic had to be cut in sections – the horse, saddle, equipment and solider were individually cut then welded together like a jigsaw puzzle. “The lead horse needed to be more detailed then the horses got smaller and less detailed. “The graphic is made from rusty steel and a bronze finish. “Brackets allow the horses to hang off the wall to make them look more three dimensional. “Flood lights on the ground were also a great idea because vertical light washes up the wall to create shadows and allows people to see the monument at night.” Co-founder of the 7th Light Horse Menangle Historic Troop Steve Wisbey was very pleased the Light Horse Regiments could be honoured with the “wonderful” monument. “The monument reminds me of what my great grandfather said about the battle charge, the sand and dust,” he said. “It is very vivid. “It is wonderful the council has recognised our history, which can be passed on to generations. Now the history will not be lost.” Mr Hibbert also thanked his colleagues for their hard work. “I am extraordinarily proud to be associated with the monument,” he said. Cr Brticevic also officially declared Racecourse Avenue become Beersheba Parade. Cunneen Signs has worked with Campbelltown Council designing the Anzac plinths at Ingleburn Railway Station. As part of the Anzac Centenary celebrations, the council has also unveiled the Anzac Memorial at Milton Park in June, the World War I memorial in Mawson Park, the renaming of two Ingleburn bridges after battles – Gallipoli and Beersheba – and the installation of memorial plinths, in partnership with Ingleburn RSL, which take pride of place at Ingleburn Railway Station. Cr Brticevic thanked Lieutenant Len Carter from the 7th Light Horse Menangle Historic Troop for sharing his knowledge, and Club Menangle, the Dahua Group and Cabra Vale Diggers for their support.

Monument Commemorates
Battle of Beersheba
By Ashleigh Tullis
The bravery of the Light Horse Regiments during the Battle of Beersheba was recognised with a large memorial at Menangle Park this week. Campbelltown Council mayor George Brticevic unveiled the double-sided and illuminated monument in recognition of the battle’s centenary. Light Horse Regiments trained on the grounds and surrounding properties now known as Club Menangle. The mounted forces that trained at the Menangle Park site formed part of the regiments that participated in the Battle of Beersheba. The final phase of the all-day battle on October 31 1917 was the famous charge of the Light Horse Brigade – a swift, surprising and brave manoeuvre which resulted in the capture of the strategic town of Beersheba. Thirty-one brave Australians were killed, and 36 were wounded in the battle which enabled the British Empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza on 7 November and advance into Palestine. Cr Brticevic said he was pleased to unveil the monument on Thursday, October 26. “Almost 100 years have passed since the Battle of Beersheba, and I’m certain our Campbelltown veterans would be very proud we have not forgotten their sacrifice,” he said. “The monument acknowledges the service and sacrifice of local men and women who have served across all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations during the past century.”
