Rector’s Corner VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (VBS) We’ve turned a corner at SL2 in doing our VBS.
My first years we were always short of money
and during summer time looked bad. Now we
have funding. Your generosity has made that happen!
The challenges we face being multiple cultures, lan-
guages and economic classes, are all superseded by
VBS. Volunteers show up to pitch in from the 1:00 pm
service, and kids are mixed not only from services but
from inside and outside the church. The result is a
wonderful, textured and diverse salad of people.
Thanks to Ebie Mountford and her crew of support-
ers, Sue Henry, Patty Hale, Lee Wilson, Susan Cole,
Claudia Roseberry and others who come and go, the
event is well attended and lots of fun.
VBS is a model for
unifying events for
the adults, too.
Latinos who are
shy about their
English can help
and share in the
work around VBS.
They might avoid
the planning for
reasons of lan-
guage, but they
seem to just show
up anyway. This
year we will have
Fr. Eliacin with us,
and his three kids!
Ricci might even
crash the party (his
wife). I am very hopeful for a stellar year.

Gracias a Ebie
mos a P. Eliacin y
sus tres hijos. Ricci tal vez venga (su esposa). Estoy

facilitador entrenado. Venga a hablarme

THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 3

SENIOR WARDEN’S REPORT “…truly I tell you, whatever you did for the least of
these brothers and sisters of mine you did for me.”
-Mathew 25:40
The St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas Outreach Committee pro-
vides many programs to serve the needy in our com-
munity. This month I want to highlight the service
we provide for homeless and hungry people. St.
Luke’s has been helping needy individuals and fami-
lies in Vancouver with food for many years, but the
mission has recently expanded and is evolving.
Today a group of volunteers handed out sandwich
lunches, bagels and pastries, clothing, hygiene kits
and a few bus passes each Tuesday through Friday.
Other volunteers make up food bags every Wednes-
day, still others wash, sort and fold donated clothing
for the clothes closet. Most of the items donated come
from parishioners, but pastries, underwear, and some
children’s clothing are donated by local businesses.
Volunteers make 50-60 sandwiches and prepare at
least 10 single, and 10 family food bags per week.
Very little is wasted.
Donations are always needed. During the summer,
baseball caps and visors and men’s casual summer
clothing are in great demand, and the clothes closet is
very short of these items, especially men’s pants with
32-38 inch waists. Please consider donating these
items if you have them. Travel sized shampoo, condi-
tioner, soap and/or lotion are also needed. If you or a
relative is staying in a hotel this summer you may be
able to collect some of these items to donate. More
volunteers are also always welcome!

WHY DO WE GIVE? It has been interesting to hear why members of our
church give to support our church and community.
Here are few more comments from members of the
vestry in response to my question ‘Why do you give
money to the church?’
From Ric Romagosa: We are fortunate to have such a
wonderful community at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. It
just feels right to support it and its ministries.
From Kathy Gallaher: I give because I love my
church community and want to honor the blessings
that I have received in my life. I love the liturgy, the
music, the children—and it takes money to keep
those programs going.
Gratitude, honor, love, a sense of responsibility, a de-
sire to see a good work continue to grow—these are
the reasons why our members share their financial
blessings with the church.
Our collective generosity is what keeps our programs
running, and what enables us to be a vital part of our
community and the lives of those we serve. If you are
not a part of the ministry of giving
financial support to the church, please
consider starting now. No amount is too
small and the time to start is now.

ADULT FORMATION Early in June, I went with Father Jaime to Pacific Lu-
theran University for a conference on adult spiritual
formation. We spent three intense days learning
with other clergy and laypersons--Episcopalians,
Lutherans and Methodists-- about the difference be-
tween spiritual education and spiritual formation,
and how to foster the growth of both in our home
parishes. Among the many take-always that we re-
ceived is the reassurance that spiritual formation is
already occurring here at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas
through a number of ongoing ministries, and we
brought home with us some new ideas and renewed
energy for expanding our parish’s offerings of adult
education and formation. Our ideas require a col-
laborative approach, so be on the lookout for a sur-
vey on adult spiritual education and formation to
arrive via email. This will help our education team
better understand what sorts of things you are inter-
ested in learning, how you like to learn, and what
your ideas are for future programs. One of my fa-
vorite programs of adult spiritual education and for-
mation, Education for Ministry (EfM), is set to begin
THE MESSENGER EL MENSAJERO 7
in the Fall. In EfM a group of participants will dis-
cuss readings on our Holy Scriptures as well as
church history and theology, worship
together, and engage in Theological Reflec-
tion, all guided by a trained mentor. Come
and find me for more information.

mas image, and five additional non-seasonal note

RETIREMENT GROUP Rev. Chuck Barnes, hosts a coffee fellowship group
for those who are retired, bi weekly. Come join the
discussion as we explore the question of where to
shine in retirement bi-weekly, July & August ses-

the Glenwood Place Senior Living (5500
NE 82nd Ave). Meetings in July and Au-
gust will be on Thursdays, July 23 and

Worship NOTES FROM THE MUSIC ROOM Summer allows us all to relax a bit and recharge our
liturgical batteries at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. A volun-
teer Sunday morning choir, open to all, meets occa-
sionally half an hour before the 10 AM service to
provide a little special music and our home-grown
guitarists have a chance to sharpen their skills.
Jazz Vespers will continue
with our perennial favorite
Mike Horsfall at the piano
and vibraphone on August
1st, with music starting that
Saturday at 6:30 PM, a little
later than usual. Correct your
calendar entry with that
slight time change and bring
family, friends and neighbors
for an ecumenical service of
prayer, praise, and pulse led
by a long-standing member
of the Oregon Jazz Hall of Fame. Drummer Nick
Saume will join us again, who not only played for
Jimi Hendrix and recorded as a cover for Ringo
Starr, but also toured with Harry Belafonte.
Nancy and I will spend nearly a month in France,
July 21st through August 18th. We will play three
concerts on three successive Sundays in three differ-
ent towns on three completely different pipe organs,
culminating in a concert at the Cathedral in Orleans
on August 9th. We’ll also fit in a little R&R. I’m very
grateful to the parish and to the vestry
in particular for supporting me and
allowing for some professional time
away.
Tim Nickel, Director of Music
ORGAN RECITAL Nancy and I would like to invite you to a free organ
recital of music on Saturday evening, July 11th at 7:30
PM here at St. Luke’s ~ San Lucas. We will share

ANNUAL SPRING SUMMIT! On May 31st Father Jaime, Lee Wilson and I attend-
ed the Annual Spring Summit of the Faith Action
Network. Held at Vancouver Heights United Meth-
odist Church this multi-denominational gathering
was to help guide legislative action for the upcom-
ing year and determine priorities to act upon. The
process was conducted by voting twice. First sepa-
rated into congressional districts and then individu-
ally. The 5 priorities were all humanity driven in-
cluding managing homelessness/poverty, equalizing
education & healthcare and increasing the minimum
wage. Also a priority is human trafficking. Other
issues put on the table were gun control, immigra-
tion and ending the death penalty.
There was a free will donation taken to purchase
tents for the stricken people of Nepal. Nearly
$1,000.00 was donated. Any questions
about the summit or FAN (Faith Action
Network), feel free to ask.
Peace and Joy!

ESL SUMMER CLASSES There are exciting ESL things happening. If you are
interested in teaching, assisting or helping care for
the children of our students, please contact me.
There are only 16 classes for summer session and no
one is expected to make all of them. Here are the 4
basics:
Child care for those 4 and younger will be pro-
vided by paid staff- Jess Wilson.
Several who helped with spring ESL class have
been meeting to discuss the textbook we have read
(about how to teach ESL) and to see what simple re-
sources we can pull together for anyone who wants
some help. We want to make it easy to volunteer and
make it successful program for all. No experience is
needed to be helpful as ESL teacher
The 16 summer classes will be held in July and
August on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 6:30-
8pm, beginning Tuesday, July 7 and continuing
through Thursday, August 27.
Lastly, there is a possibility that part of these
classes (maybe 30 minutes of the 3 hours of class
each week) will be a reversed- English speakers will
get help from Spanish students to develop/improve
upon their Spanish fluency. This idea is not fully
flushed out yet.
The ESL team looks forward to hearing from you

RELAY FOR LIFE LUMINARIES During Coffee Hour on Sunday, July 5, you are in-
vited to decorate a paper luminaria that will be lite
and displayed during the July 11 Relay for Life at
Columbia River High School. This is a great way to
honor a cancer survivor, someone fighting cancer or
in memory of someone who lost the fight. Your free-
will donation will go to Relay for Life.
ALS WALK – OCTOBER 3, 2015 This is our 7th year in the WALK TO DEFEAT ALS.
As always, we will be walking in loving memory of
Father Eric Werts. This 5K walk helps us raise funds
for research, support of families, awareness and
most importantly finding a CURE.
The ALS Association and the community of St
Luke’s ~ San Lucas were so good to us and helped
make Eric’s journey so much easier. I hope you will
consider supporting our walk team FOR THE LOVE
OF ERIC again this year with a donation as we
WALK TO DEFEAT ALS. You may make an online
donation via our website: http://webor.alsa.org/goto/
ruth_werts or you may send me a check made out to
“ALS Association”.
We would love to have you join us for the walk on
Saturday, October 3rd. If you can join us, please let
me know. (If you walked last year and still have
your red bandana, please wear it again as our team
symbol.) If you or anyone else would like more
information about ALS, please go to

Thank you so very much.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES DRIVE It is almost that time of year --- school supply time!
Many stores already have school supplies on sale.
We will be collecting in August. Any and all sup-
plies are welcome, as well as monetary donations;
checks should have “Outreach” on the Memo Line.
Backpacks are needed as well. All donations are
greatly appreciated, especially by the children who
will be receiving them. There are so many kids in
need whom we have been able to help through the
years. A huge thank you to all of you who
donate and give these kids a start on suc-
cess for the upcoming school year!

PEACE & JUSTICE FAIR The 12th annual Peace and Justice Fair will be
Saturday, September 12 at Esther Short Park. St
Luke's ~ San Lucas has exhibited for several years.
Being at the Fair is the most visible parish presence
in the community outside our campus. Please com-
mit to helping this large and unique once-per-year
event. Help is needed to plan the exhibit in advance,
then on Fair day to load the truck at church, unload
and set up in the Park, welcome visitors to the ex-
hibit from 9AM-4PM, take down, load the truck,
and unload back on campus. Many helpers means
nobody must do all that work. Also, if parishioners
belong to human rights, environmental, social jus-
tice and similar groups that could also exhibit, urge
them to do so. Den Mark is a Fair organizer and can
answer questions about the Fair itself (694-3703).

Facility
PARISH HALL CEILING REPAIR We can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.
The contract has been signed with Team Construc-
tion Company (they did the Narthex addition) to do
the permanent repairs on the sagging ceiling in the
Parish Hall. The temporary posts will be replaced
with steel beams across the ceiling and supported
within the walls and the posts will be gone. The
beams will be wrapped with sheetrock to enhance
the appearance. The ceiling tiles will be replaced
along with new LED lighting and new fans. The
floor will be refinished at the end of the job. The
work is scheduled to commence on July 20 and we
will have full use of the facility by August 8. During
the work the Parish Hall and the basement below it
will be off limits to everyone not involved in the pro-
ject. Access to the kitchen and pie room will be
worked out for those who need to have access to
them. If you have any questions about the project
you can contact Bob Hiltz, John Mathieu,
on me and we will be able to answer
them.

JULY & AUGUST PRAYER REQUESTS
SPORTS AT ST. LUKE’S HALL In 1909, the new rector of St. Luke’s, Otis Gray, had a
portion of St. Luke’s Hall converted for a gymnasi-
um. The hall, located at Eighth and B Streets (to the
east of the church at C Street) had formerly been the
St. Luke’s Parish School, before closing in 1889. The
hall would be a new athletic club where basketball,
handball, and other games could be played. As The
Columbian printed, “The room will be fitted with
lockers and shower baths, and later on it is proposed
to install a swimming pool.” Initially the club was to
be open for men over 18 years old, but that was
quickly changed to “classes for both boys and girls
from 11 to 70 years old”.
Many basketball games were played by various
teams at the hall. There were also fencing and boxing
matches conducted, including well known sportsmen
from Fort Vancouver.
Late in 1911, the Vancouver Ministerial Association,
including religious leaders from all churches in Van-
couver, set up a youth gymnasium program using
the St. Luke’s Hall. This is essentially the forerunner
of the YMCA in Vancouver, Washington.
