Milky Way Facts

• The Galaxy in which holds our Solar System

• Contains over 200 billion stars

• The mass is roughly between 750 billion and one trillion solar masses

• It’s a Barred Spiral Galaxy

What is a Barred Spiral Galaxy?

• A Barred Spiral Galaxy is a form of spiral galaxy that has a central bar shaped structure made of stars

How old is the Milky Way

• The Milky Way is approximately 13.6 billion years old

• And thought to be formed about the same time as the big bang occurred.

How did the Milky Way get it’s name?

• Nobody is sure how the Milky Way got its strange name.

• But we know why it did got its name, the Milky Way is a faint white milky streak across the sky.

How long does it take to orbit around the Milky Way?

• The solar system completely orbits the Milky Way every 225,000,000 years

Is there a ring around the Milky Way?

• Yes! • Scientist have done

research and have found that there is a ring of stars that have the same orbit patterns and are moving at the same rate around the Milky Way.

How the Milky Way Formed

• Evidence suggests that our galaxy, the Milky Way, came into being as a consequence of the collapse of a vast gas cloud.

• The birth of new stars also helped in shaping the Milky Way.

Is there a Black Hole in the center of the Milky Way?

• Most scientist believe that yes there is a possibility that there could be a black hole in the center of the Milky Way.

Will Andromeda eventually crash into the Milky Way?

• Scientist have determined that in roughly three billion years Andromeda will crash into us

• The colliding of the two galaxy's would most likely result in the combining of the two.

• And could become an elliptical galaxy.

What will become of the Milky Way?

• In the future most likely billions of years from now the galaxy will certainly seize to exist.

• This will happen when all the uranium that was made in the early years of the galaxy will burn up.

• Which would result in no more new stars will be born and all the old ones will die.

The Milky Way Galaxy now

• Where we live now is absolutly different from when it all began.

• It is no longer just a mass of helium and hydrogen gas

• And has been formed into what is now a barred spiral galaxy
