Chapter 1

Why Do You Need Driver’s Ed.

Drivers Ed is usually required to get a driver’s license for the first time

Drivers ed courses can sometimes help to decrease insurance premiums

Drivers ed can sometimes eliminate remove points from your driver’s license

In some areas, driver ed courses can be taken to dismiss traffic violations

Driver education courses can teach safety tips for new drivers

Drivers Ed courses increase the awareness of driver’s everywhere 

Driver’s ed will improve a driver’s confidence

Driver’s education can help drivers overcome their fear of driving

Proofs of Age and Identity:

A. Original Birth certificate or certified copy.

1. Can not be a photo copy.

2. Can not be a certificate from hospital.

B. Valid U.S. alien registration card combined with a Social Security card.

Proof of Address

Utility or credit card bill showing name and current address w/in the last 90 days

Checking or savings account statement w/in 60 days

Parent/guardian certification that verifies that you are living w/ them

A property tax bill/statement w/in the last year

6 Point ID Verification Program

Used to verify: Age Identification Address SSN # Immigration Status ( if applicable

Purpose: to prevent fraudulent documents from obtaining official documents

Acceptable Documents

4 point documents – Primary docs Birth certificate Adoption papers US Passport Current or expired digital driver license Valid non digital driver license Active Military photo ID Certificate of citizenship

Acceptable Documents

3 Point documents – secondary docs Marriage certificate or divorce decree Legal name change court order Current US military dependent card US military photo retiree card

Acceptable Documents

2 point documents – secondary docs Valid US gov’t employee driver license Valid US gov’t employee photo ID card US military discharge papers (DD214) Pilot license US school photo ID card along with

transcripts US college photo ID along with transcripts

Acceptable Documents

1 point documents – secondary docs Social security card HS diploma or GED ATM card/ Bank Statement Health insurance card Current photo license from another state Bill from a NJ municipality

Types of NJ licenses:

A. Class D – Basic Automobile

B. Class A, B, & C – CDL

C. Class E – Motorcycle

D. Class F - Moped

E. Class G - Farm

Four – Year License:

A. NJ license is good for 4 years. 1st one is a photo.

Americans with Disabilities Act:

A. MVS complies with ADA and can not deny programs.

The Early Bird Road

I. Get a special learners permit-be a least 16 and a half-have a signed consent from parent/guardian-enroll in an approved driving school (6 hrs. behind the wheel)-pass the vision and written driver test-pay the required fee ($10)

II. Practice Supervised Driving

-practice w/ an adult supervising driver in the front passenger seat

-observe the student permit driving

restrictions

-practice for at least 6 months

Student Permit Driving Restrictions

- Must have an adult who is at least 21 and has had a NJ driver license for at least 3 years

- No driving between 11 pm & 5 am- Passengers are from driver’s household,

plus one add’l person- All occupants wear seat belts- Driver may not use cell phone on the road

III. Get a Provisional Driver License

-be at least 17

-complete the supervised period (1 yr)

-pass the road test (MVC)

IV. Driving Unsupervised

-can’t drive between 12:01 am & 5:00 am

-passengers must be from the driver’s household, plus one additional person

(if the passengers are over the age of 21 there are no passenger restrictions)

V. Get the Basic Driver License

-be at least 18

-complete the unsupervised driving period for at least a year

-pay the required fee ($24)

The Young Adult Road

I. Get an examination permit

-be at least 17

-parental/guardian consent

-pass vision and written driver test

-pay fee

II. Practice supervised driving

- practice w/ and adult driver

-observe the permit restrictions

-practice for 6 months

III. Get a provisional driver license

-complete the supervised driving period

-pass the road test

IV. Practice unsupervised driving

-same as early bird road

V. Get basic driver license

-complete the unsupervised driving period

-pay fee

The Adult Road

Must be at least 21 years old Permit for 3 months Must observe GDL restrictions Provisional license for a year Get a basic driver license
