What is Orthodontics?

A special discipline of dentistry concerned with aligning the teeth and oral health .Ortho: correctOdont: tooth

Fixed Appliance. a mechanical device cemented to the teeth or attached by adhesive material, for changing the relative positions of the teeth.

Removable Appliance . An appliance that is not fixed to teeth, but can be removed by the patient.

Orthodontic Appliances Types

Braces. Braces are the mechanism we use to “get a

handle on the teeth. used to align and straighten teeth.

Fixed Appliance

appliances are used in the upper arches to maintain space.

Transpalatal Arch TPA

Nance Appliance is used to prevent upper molars from rotating or moving forward after extraction of primary teeth or during your orthodontic treatment.

The Lingual Arch is a metal bar that is attached to the tongue-side of the lower first molar bands, and form fitted behind the teeth.

attached to the molars by 2 bands and has two or four active helix springs that widen the arch of the mouth to make room for crowded teeth.

quadhelix maxillary expansion appliance.

Video.MOV

An orthodontic appliance that is worn to prevent adjacent teeth from moving into the space left by an unerupted or prematurely lost tooth.

Band and loop space maintainer

is appliance used to expanding the maxillary (upper) arch. A palatal Expander is our first choice for patients requiring an increase in the width of the upper dental arch.

Palatal Expander

The Fan-type Expander widens the front of the upper arch without widening the back.

Fan Type Expander

An appliance that is not fixed to teeth, but can be removed by the patient.

is made from a plastic plate with wires coming from the sides. These grip the teeth to keep the brace in place.

Removable Appliance .

Active (produce tooth movement/growth modification)

Mechanical appliances .Functional appliances (FA s.).

Passive Retainers.

Space maintainers.

Classification Of ROA

Active Components. Retentive Components. Acrylic Base Plate. Anchorage.

Components Of Removable Applaince

Screws

Function:

Expansion and distalization

Activation: 1 turn / week = 0.25mm

(1/4 turn)

Active component of Removable Appliances.

Wire springs Finger spring Z-spring Canine retractor Short labial arch

Active component of Removable Appliances.

0.5 mm diameter SS Function: proclination of 1 or 2 incisor

Z-Spring

0.5 mm diameter SS= incisors 0.6 mm diameter SS=premolars Function: proclination of incisors, premolars

T-Spring

0.5 mm diameter SS= incisors 0.6 mm diameter SS= canine and premolars Function: mesial or distal movement

Finger /palatal spring

0.7 mm diameter SS Function: retraction of anterior teeth

Labial Bow

0.7 mm diameter SS Function: Retraction of anterior teeth and close midline diastema

Split Labial Bow

Buccal canine retractor

0.7 mm diameter SS Function: Palatal and distal movement of mesially angulated canines

Types of Clasps

1. Adams Clasps

2. Southend Clasps

3. Labial bow

4. Ball-ended Clasps

Retentive components

Adams clasps.

0.7 mm diameter SS on molars 0.6 mm SS on premolars, canine and

deciduous molar.

Retentive component of Removable Appliances

Southend clasps

0.7 mm diameter SS Function: Useful when distal movement of canines

required.

Retentive component of Removable Appliances

•Undercut interproximally

•good retention

•0.7 mm diameter SS

Ball- ended Clasps

Labial bow •0.7 mm diameter SS •Function: •Retention •important when mesial / distal •movement is planned

Retentive component of Removable Appliances

1. Hold components

2. Clear acrylic :

- heat cure - cold cure

3. Comfortable

4. Good fit

5. Can be active - biteplanes

Baseplate

Twin block appliance

•The upper and lower parts fit together using posterior bite blocks with interlocking biteplanes which posture the mandible forward

TYPES OF FUNCTIONAL APPLIANCE

is removable and stimulates growth of the lower jaw forward to both correct the overbite (deep bite) and over jet (upper teeth sticking out).

Bionator

•Is a functional regulator and uses shield. •Complex, uncomfortable, rapid changes if

worn properly.

The Frankle Appliance
