ABOUT @PEOPLESHARK

RECRUITING IS AN OBSESSION FOR ME.*

* Which means that I may have spent a significant portion of my career hating on HR. But I didn’t mean it. I love you guys.

THIS HAPPENED.

• The Vatican called Twitter• Hashtag #AskPontiFEX• 7 languages, including

Arabic• “No one will be putting

tweets in the pope’s mouth”

THEN THIS HAPPENED.

• 3 Million followers• Tweets about 3x/week• Also on Instagram!• He takes a selfie!

WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH RECRUITING STRATEGY?

THE VATICAN IS ON TO SOMETHING

The shift in population demographics means that we have to do things differently.

TRENDS THAT WILL SHAPE STRATEGY IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS

Demographics Robots vs. Workers

Openness, transparency collaboration

Leapfrogging Leadership

Globalizationa and Mobility

Talent Shortages

Wealth Gap Privacy and Communication

The culture of AWESOME

FOR THE FIRST TIME IN HISTORY 4 GENERATIONS IN THE WORKPLACE

63.3% OF U.S. EXECUTIVES WILL BE ELIGIBLE TO RETIRE IN THE NEXT 5 YEARS

From the time they were teenagers, Millennials have come to expect highly personalized, fast, instant response. They have zero tolerance for delays and expect to give and receive feedback at all junctions.

Sure, they’re fast, but are they prepared to lead?

BY 2030 2 BILLION JOBS WILL SIMPLY DISAPPEAR

Factory workers. Lawyers. Pharmacists. Drivers. Store Clerks. Soldiers. Babysitters. Reporters. Bank Tellers. Lifeguards. Accountants Firefighters. Optometrists. Garbage Men. Librarians. Teachers.

AVERAGE AGE OF A FAST FOOD WORKER IN THE YEAR 2000. IN 2011, THE AVERAGE AGE IS 29.5

40% OF MILLENNIALS THINK THAT BLOGGING ABOUT WORKPLACE ISSUES IS ACCEPTABLE. COMPARED TO 28% OF BOOMERS

• Do you ban social media? Guess what? They have smart phones

• Your company looks lame, old-fashioned and mistrustful

• Top talent won’t stand for it• You could be losing out

WHERE WILL YOUR WORKERS WORK?

• Rising standards of living in Asia and other regions = new customers for U.S. companies

• 1999 to 2009 U.S. Multinational companies eliminated 3 million domestic jobs whilst adding 2.4 million jobs abroad

• Will increasing wages reverse outsourcing trend?

• Working from home, could mean working from anywhere

MILLENIALS ARE MOBILE

• Nearly 60% have changed jobs already

• 70% leave their first job after college within 2 years

• Personal fulfillment more important than compensation

WHAT IF THIS GUY HAD SNAPCHAT?

• Privacy concerns, free speech, content ownership – have you worked it out?

• Self-destructing communication, data, design, transportation

• 43% of 18-24 year-olds say that texting is just as meaningful as an actual conversation with someone over the phone (eMarketer 2010)

AN ESTIMATED 31% OF EMPLOYERS WORLDWIDE FIND IT DIFFICULT TO FILL POSITIONS BECAUSE OF TALENT SHORTAGES IN THEIR MARKETS

• Most educated generation, 63% have a college degree

• Many are life-long learners, entrepreneurial and have side hustle

• Millennials want on-the-job training and prefer to “learn by doing”

• Talent gap attributed to tech skills

THE CULTURE OF AWESOME

MILLENNIALS ARE SAD.

They have been told they can do anything. But turns out it’s hard.

MY GOAL: NOT BORING, DIDN’T SUCK, INTERACTIVE, MADE YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE EMPLOYEES AND RECRUITS

What is the demographic make -up of your company?

Is your social media policy outdated? Do

you need it?

What’s your EVP? Are you green? Offer

training? WFH? Feedback?

Are you tapped into the global

workforce?

Are you optimizing your data? Using it to

predict and anticipate behavior?

The robots are coming!

Do you understand changing attitudes toward work and

everything?

How responsive are you? Is your

organization fast, informal?

THANK YOU!
