A Message from Our ChairDear Guideposts Friends,
I have the honor of serving as Chair of our active, engaged, faith-in-action Foundation Board. The word foundation means the load-bearing support of a building, and every member of the Guideposts Foundation Board takes that to heart, understanding that all of our Outreach Ministries are the sound structure that rises above its sturdy foundation.
Faith made active is what we do. This year members of the Board personally carried our mission into their
communities, ever seeking fresh ways to find the spiritual needs of the many we serve and fill through every one of our Outreach Ministries.
The work of the Foundation begins with you. The Board oversees the generation and distribution of all charitable contributions, the financial lifeblood of all we are able to do. This year we have stepped up our efforts to connect in a personal way with our donors, assuring them that every dollar of their generous support is multiplied many times over in the active outreach of our ministries. We have also worked to bring new donors into the fellowship of our ongoing initiatives, offering them a role in this significant and satisfying work.
We are ever grateful and delighted to have received a number of bequests that came as complete surprises to us. Those quiet, unassuming donors had no need of recognition, selflessly committed to the long-range health of this organization close to their spiritual hearts. We are deeply grateful, to you, our many donors, whose generosity has helped us bring messages of hope and inspiration into the lives of so many people this past year.
Giving has always been an important part of Guideposts from the beginning, because it was an important part of my parents’ lives and with this want to remember one of our greatest Guideposts champions. We were saddened this year to learn of the death of Retired Chaplain (Major General) G.T. Gunhus who was instrumental in the formation of our ever-growing Military Ministry. For eight wonderful years, G.T. gave generously and selflessly to guide the growth of military outreach initiatives at Guideposts for maximum efficiency and effectiveness. We will sorely miss him.
On behalf of the entire Guideposts Foundation Board I extend our gratitude to you who have helped make possible another great year of growth and strength.

Courage, comfort and renewed hope
Dear Guideposts Friends,Guideposts has always been an organization of great
strides and broad vision. As we have for decades, thanks wholly to your steadfast generosity and support, we’ve kept our finger on the pulse of change in the world of seekers we are committed to serve. We continued our work to integrate and strengthen this organization that drives powerful new ways to connect to those we have served for years, and the many younger seekers casting about for spiritual grounding in these dynamic and challenging times. That energy, the power of faith in action, is what we deliver in a multitude of ways to our diverse constituencies.
This is the most promising environment I’ve ever seen for the future of Guideposts. The explosion of digital communication channels offers more ways than ever before to reach the hearts and minds of seekers. We are exploiting the power of digital potential, creating information as dynamic and contemporary as the media that makes it possible. We now have more than 20,000 pages of practical, inspiring spiritual messages across Facebook, Instagram, blogs, websites, and a wide array of video offerings. We make our information easy and available to access, offering the immediate help so often critical in the face of rapid change and escalating need.
Our print presence continues to expand, responsive to what we see is the movement of young seekers back to print media. We are exploring new ideas for magazines and our inspirational literature ministry that is vital and productive, offering a widening array of printed helping materials to meet specific spiritual needs. We observe with gratitude a groundswell of multi-faceted young people with a strong commitment to do good in the world, and all we do has the direct effect of supporting them in this important work.
We talk to people personally, as in real-time conversation, in a way that has always been unique to Guideposts. Our goal is to infuse Guideposts with a digital soul. This is not an overlay on our mission, but wholly reflects our core belief that everything we do is ministry. We are building digital presence into our DNA, so that offers are infused with a spirit and immediacy never possible before.
In every one of its dynamic divisions, Guideposts is available, welcoming, and ever conversant with the spiritual challenges affecting the lives of people of all ages and from all walks of life. We have had a remarkable year of progress and service, putting our own faith into action and offering workable ways to do just that for all who have called on us for help. You are an integral part of this team of serving people. We are forever grateful to you for joining us in this important and deeply satisfying work.

Dear Friends in Faith,But just say the word, and my servant will be healed.
That’s the Centurion talking to Jesus in the famous story from Luke 7. Jesus marveled at the man’s faith and took immediate action, transforming the Centurion’s faith into a miracle of healing. That is the heart of all of our Guideposts Outreach Ministries, each one operating from absolute faith in the power of the Lord to heal, uplift, inspire and encourage. And as we do so, we are able to transfer the energy of that faith to those who call on us for help, so that they too can tap into its transformational power.
We know that people can be inspired in seconds. And so knowing, we have taken our digital ministry wholly to heart, expanding our welcoming presence in a wide variety of digital platforms. A single image can carry the weight of a thousand words, and words combined with images can go directly to the heart in a bright instant of relief, hope, and the courage to go on.
This year we continued to close the spiritual distance between all we do and those we serve. We felt and acknowledged the intimate engagement of men, women and young people with all we have offered. We heard people as they poured out their hearts to us about illness, financial crises, sorrow, despair, natural disasters and anxieties of all kinds.
We know that we have to be there, in the moment. So we have acted with determination on all fronts. Our Military Ministry expanded our helping presence in ever more military bases. We were personally there in VA hospitals across the country, and with the help of military chaplains, we continued to create and provide helping materials of all kinds. OurPrayer generated more than ten million prayer requests. We reached even more hospitals and the children they serve with Comfort Kits. We met the ever-increasing demand for printed materials, often the mainstay of a person’s daily walk with God. We brought the power of faith in action to prisons, nursing homes and senior citizen centers.
And we joined spiritual forces with a variety of helping organizations, including a digital partnership that now offers Guideposts audio books and booklets. These are exciting times for Outreach Ministries as we have worked to keep pace with the critical, changing needs of the many we serve. Our Outreach team lives their own faith-in-action every day, enjoying the deep satisfaction of helping create joy out of deep sadness, courage out of fear, and restoring faith from the depths of despair.
We have the faith of the Centurion, faith made active in the real world of living, seeking beings. In every act of ministry we performed this year, we joined our actions with yours who have brought your own faith to bear on behalf of all we have served together.

Thank you for praying. I have found peace within myself to forgive those who have hurt me. — Louis C.
The personal touch of ministry infused every prayer we prayed on behalf of people like Louis C. with the energy of love. This year, 937 new prayer volunteers joined more than 2,500 volunteers who responded by name and need to close to 11,000,000 prayer requests. The personal touch of ministry vibrated through digital media, reaching more younger seekers than ever before through variety of digital media. The OurPrayer Facebook page generated more than a million ‘likes’, a 119% increase over last year. And 10,500,000 prayer requests flowed in through Facebook’s welcoming portals, more than double last year.
We created new and dynamic ways to respond to the multiple challenges of contemporary life with the power of personal prayer. We connected through Instagram, which generated more than 100,000 followers, and launched the weekly RealTime Prayer Call, bringing callers from far and wide together for 15 minutes of faith-filled prayer and devotion. The shared personal touch of fellowship and love touched the lives of thousands of seekers.
Nuestra Oracion, our Spanish-language OurPrayer page received 28,000 prayer requests and generated 24,900 ‘likes.’ After the US, top site visitors hailed from Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada and the Dominican Republic.
We also worked to enlarge our digital presence, connecting with our constituencies through the OurPrayer app — which generated 17,450 prayer requests, and the creation of innovative videos to communicate and build relationships. We continued to offer online newsletters and a eleven Days of Prayer online, generating more than 24,000 prayer requests. @OurPrayer on Twitter tweeted scriptures and words of inspiration that reached people in their moment of need.
Our 24th annual Thanksgiving Day of Prayer and our Good Friday Day of Prayer gathered thousands of praying friends from around the world into the close-knit, joyful fellowship of spiritual seekers. We joined spiritual forces with a variety of partnering organizations, sending special prayer materials for their specific needs.
OurPrayer pulsed with the joy of prayer 24 hours a day, every day of the year. That joy was the heartbeat of every individual prayer request we responded to with sincerity. It was the life energy of the personal, caring commitment of each of our prayer volunteers. We thank you, our dear friends in faith, for each of you have helped make possible in this momentous year.

If we can get Guideposts into the hands of people who may not have a devotional life or any example of the Holy Spirit, they can share the true-life stories of how God works in the world. — Rob Carter, Director of Pastoral Care
As always, we found new ways to share the power of faith and prayer through an expanding variety of Guideposts publications, central to the work of so many caregivers like Rob Carter, and a mainstay of the daily spiritual lives of thousands of seekers.
Recognizing the need for spiritual help for relationships and caregivers, this year we developed and published two annual booklets. Strength for Relationships was distributed to more than 159,000 people, of this amount 27,222 were the Spanish edition and 38,045 were provided to the military. And we met the demand for more than 121,000 copies of Strength for Helping Hearts: Reflections for Caregivers. Overall publication distribution topped 3,400,000 copies. Guideposts magazine found their way into the eager hands of military and VA, were welcomed by prison chaplains, and received by seekers of all ages and from all walks of life. We expanded our booklet ministry, launching a booklet partnership with an online church that generated more than 20,000 page views and downloads.
When Brad Bertrand discovered that the Guideposts booklet The Healing Power of the 23rd Psalm was available as a complimentary download, as are many others, he quickly printed it out. Five years later, Brad has given away hundreds of these helping booklets and makes them available in his Financial Services office for all his clients. More than 700,000 booklets including The Healing Power of the 23rd Psalm, addressing the most pressing spiritual concerns of those we serve, were distributed this year.
Our Outreach Publication page on Facebook that launched last year saw phenomenal growth. We launched a new partnership with the National Federation for the Blind/NFB-NEWSLINE subscribers that makes Guideposts magazine available in audio version for vision impaired and blind subscribers at no cost to them.
We know how difficult and lonely the holidays can be for so many who call on us for help. We sent beautiful messages of joy and hope via over 100,000 Christmas cards personally signed by volunteers to military personnel and hospitalized veterans.
Everyday people find their lives impacted by the positive, faith-filled messages of free Guideposts Outreach publications. Lives are changed for the better, hope replaces despair, and fellowship softens the pain of grief and loneliness for the many we are called to serve together. Thank you, our friend in faith for your steadfast support and prayers, and for all we do together.

“The Guideposts materials are a source of encouragement to so many. They cause people to reflect through personal testimony and stories on the reality of God’s presence in our broken world. People need to know his love and grace.” — Chaplain Thomas Solhjem, US Army
It has been a year of great and significant growth of Military Outreach. As we mourned the passing of Retired Chaplain (Major General) G.T Gunhus, and honored his eight years of selfless service to Military Outreach, Chaplain Ken Sampson led the march in servicing our military accounts and identifying new ways to increase distribution. This year, we made special efforts to expand our spiritual services to Air Force bases and their Chaplains. In addition to several VA hospitals in PA, CA, DE, NY, TN and DC, Chaplain Samson personally visited Ft. Belvoir, Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Joint Base Anascostia, The Pentagon, and other bases including Andrews AFB, Ft. Campbell, Los Angeles AFB, Ft. Sill, Ft. Sam Houston, and Tinker AFB. We also focused on introducing many new and younger Chaplains to the value of Guideposts in their work.
In an exciting new partnership, we began working with Chaplain Michael McCoy, Director of the National Chaplain Center, to begin development of a VA booklet for 2017 dealing with the issues facing today’s veterans. We supplied VA hospitals, military chaplains and military bases with more than 1,100,000 free booklets and inspirational materials, including more than 685,000 copies of Guideposts magazine, and more than 61,000 copies of the camouflage cover Military Daily Guideposts, enabling a close spiritual connection with loved ones and friends at home.
We delivered 38,000 complimentary copies of Strength for Relationships, our annual booklet, into the hands of military and VA chaplains and those they serve. Our hospitalized vets and military personnel, received more than 100,000 military Christmas cards, deeply appreciated by many service men and women for whom the holiday may be a time of heartache and deep loneliness.
We can do all this because you stand shoulder to shoulder with us in giving and caring as you did in this year of growth and strength. Your generous support ensures that we will always be able to answer the call with the strong, compassionate and uplifting response of our Outreach Military Ministry. Thank you.

Gabriella was so appreciative of the Comfort Kit and Keeps Sparkle the Caring Star on her bed. She loves it! — Josie Cardona, Gabriella’s mother
We formed 41 new hospital partnerships this year, added to our 582 existing ones in 49 states, and began development of a digital tool-kit to inspire individuals to get involved with this dynamic ministry. Our Comfort Kit Facebook page generated 67,500 likes, a significant increase over last year. Demand for the Kits continues to increase as ever more hospitals, grateful parents, and beloved children share the many ways the Kits have brought spiritual and emotional comfort and eased their fears.
The Kits have also inspired a variety of personal ministries. After young Maddie Mizraji fell critically ill and was hospitalized for six days, she knew she had to do something to help other hospitalized kids. As part of a school project she volunteered to do arts and crafts with kids at a local hospital. There she learned that Comfort Kits had been introduced to the hospital in 2009, but the program had waned. It wasn’t long before Maddie headed off the hospital with ten Comfort Kits under her arm. Today, thanks to a young girl with a mission, the vitalized program again brings comfort and joy to the hospital’s young patients.
We were delighted to co-host a Kids Appreciation Day at Oklahoma University Medical Center. Every child received his or her own Comfort Kit treasure box, filled with Sparkle, the cuddly stuffed star, a peaceful piano CD, an “I’m Special” bracelet, stickers, a stress ball, crayons, a parent feedback card, a stand up prayer card and personalized name tag to mount on the wall. And best of all is a special Care Journal that has helped hundreds of children process their feelings and find the strength within.
Kits are also beloved by medical professionals and caregivers, who experience their joy-bringing properties first hand. Staff Chaplain Lisa Hermann, who also doubles as a puppeteer, has added Sparkle to her lively collection of puppet people. Lisa says that kids can confide in Sparkle, communicating with her in a way they are often not able to do directly with their families and medical professionals. “I wish they had Comfort Kits when I was a kid”, she says.
We are grateful for your continuing and generous support. Rest assured, your personal caring and your active faith are in every bright, blue Comfort Kit box of treasures we deliver into a child’s hands.

“Thank you so much for the Guideposts for Kids Comfort Kit you gave me
when I was sick. I loved the yellow smiling star, because it made me smile and cheered me up. I really loved all the things that were in there. It helped pass the time and made me feel happy. I hope you give these to all the sick kids on my floor.” — Isabella
“Thanks for the Kits. My son was treated at Leconte
Medical Center in Sevierville, TN with what turned out to be Walking Pneumonia. Your Kit really made him smile even though he was and is very sick.” — Christina
“I distributed a Comfort Kit to a
little girl in ICU who was very distraught. I walked into the room with the colorful kit and she stopped screaming. As I opened it up and began to display all the goodies inside she settled down and began to smile. Thank you for this wonderful program!”
— Pastor John, Hospital Chaplain

Every Gift Makes A DifferenceThanks to your generosity, the Guideposts Foundation is able to meet the needs of people who are longing for God’s presence and promises. There are many ways to give your support and make a difference! Here’s how…
HelP nOw
Your help supports Guideposts Ministries with gifts made by cash, check, and credit cards and gifts of appreciated securities such as stock or mutual funds. Special needs and opportunities arise and many donors choose to invest via a major gift to underwrite these types of projects, giving outright or pledging over a number of years. Call us at 800-728-5653 or visit www.Guideposts.org/support.

A Bequest through your will: This is the simplest way to make a gift; you only have to add the following specific language to your Will naming Guideposts Foundation as a beneficiary: “I give, devise, and bequeath _________ (a certain sum, a percentage of the estate, or the remainder of the estate) to Guideposts Foundation, Suite 27, 39 Old Ridgebury Rd., Danbury, CT 06810. (A specific program may be designated.)
charitable Gift Annuities: A Guideposts Charitable Gift Annuity is an excellent way to make a gift now, gain tax benefits, and receive payments for life. Guideposts pays a competitive rate and has an outstanding reputation of payment. Upon the death of the named annuitant(s) the remainder is distributed to the ministry programs of Guideposts.
charitable Trusts: The Guideposts Foundation will serve as trustee of such trusts if they have an initial principal amount of a minimum of $100,000 for charitable remainder trusts, or $250,000 for charitable lead trusts.
life Insurance: This is an ideal way to make a gift that will be larger than what you paid for it. You only need to make Guideposts Foundation the owner and beneficiary of the policy and pay any remaining premiums.
retirement Plans: Retirement plans may create a large income tax problem for children or other heirs. Since charities do not pay income tax, leaving this sum to Guideposts Foundation may offer a tax savings to your estate. All you need to do is to name Guideposts Foundation as a beneficiary of some, or all, of your retirement plan.
Gifts of Securities: Appreciated securities are an excellent way to give to Guideposts Ministries. Through a precise process, you may transfer shares to Guideposts. This may allow you to bypass capital gains tax and increase your charitable deduction. It is important to follow the process exactly, so please contact us, and your financial professional, for further information.

Our FoundersGUIDEPOSTS was founded in 1945 by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and his wife, Ruth Stafford Peale. Dr. Peale was one of the foremost motivational speakers and ministers of the 20th Century. He wrote 46 books, including the inspirational bestseller, The Power of Positive Thinking, first published in 1952. More than 20 million copies of this acclaimed book have been sold. Mrs. Peale led the ministries at the Peale Center for Christian Living, now merged with Guideposts, and served as Chair of the Board of Guideposts.
Exemplifying the Peale philosophy that Positive Thinking is faith in God and belief in oneself, Guideposts moves forward in its mission of helping people from all walks of life achieve their maximum personal and spiritual potential.
“ People become really quite remarkable when they start thinking that they can do things. When they believe in themselves they have the first secret of success.”
— Norman Vincent Peale
