The Red Door
NOVEMBER 2014 News of the people and ministries of Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, Sanibel, FL
MESSAGE FROM THE RECTOR
Dear Friends in Christ,
How many different variations of a cornucopia have you seen throughout your
lives? I remember teachers putting large cardboard images of them around the classroom as far back as kindergarten. How many cornucopia have you seen as centerpieces at a dining room table? There are companies who have training programs called “cornucopia,” and there’s a farm in New Hampshire named “Cornucopia Farm” – enticing potential buyers with the promise of delicious and abundant fruits and vegetables. There’s even a town in Wisconsin named Cornucopia! And all of these and more using a word derived from the Latin “cornu copiae” meaning “horn of plenty.” “Horn of plenty” – cornucopia – the familiar woven basket image overflowing with edible, healthy delights, sometimes with a sprig of flowers – signifying abundance – an overflowing abundance of delights! (I remember as a kid wondering why the horn of plenty could not be overflowing with candy and cookies!) One of the frequent themes in Paul’s epistles is what he referred to as “the fullness of Christ” and when I reflect upon the cornucopia these days before Thanksgiving, Paul’s spiritual image comes to mind. The fullness we have in Christ, that abundance of grace we’ve been offered because of his suffering and death – available to all. It is overflowing for us, spilling out of a spiritual horn of plenty. I wonder at times why we’re unable to see this overflowing of grace offered to us. Of course, grace is not a tangible item as are fruits and vegetables. Christ’s abundant grace requires a spiritual mindset that is creatively aware, open, searching – always thirsting and seeking to see where the abundance in our lives is. It’s no surprise that words relating to food are often used by people seeking to know Christ in a deeper way – thirsting, hungering, craving. So, we have this “fullness of Christ” – this bounty of love, forgiveness, and grace. Perhaps it would help us to see the cornucopia of blessings as more than simply abundance that we’ve been offered and may take freely, and also view it as nourishment – our only real nourishment. We can accept this abundance of God’s grace and be thankful, but we must also see it as nourishment that will sustain our very beings. Jesus himself tried to deepen people’s understandings of this by using metaphors of nourishment. “I am the bread of life,” he told them. Come to me and find true nourishment for the soul. Come to me and receive the abundance of my love. As we enter into the month of November, prepare for Thanksgiving, and give thanks for our blessings and the abundance of God’s love for us, let us remember something else. We’ve been offered the nourishment of God’s Spirit in Christ – now ready to flow through all of us. Let us hunger for that, thirst for that, even crave to discover that nourishment. And as we do discover it in our lives, as we drink it in wholeheartedly, let us remember to nourish and feed those around us. There’s the real cornucopia of our existence. There lies the essence of the “fullness of Christ’s love’ – in and through one another in Christ. Blessings, Ellen

worship even more celebratory that day will be

we usher in another season of new life, new

Christ.

(11:00) and continuing until Dec. 18 we will meet to explore and ponder how Jesus
embodied the following titles: "Wonderful Counselor," "Mighty God," "Everlasting Father," and "Prince of Peace." (Yes, this

good too. If you're a musician, let us know. If you'd

Nominating Committee Chair
Appointed At the October Vestry Meeting Stephanie Rahe
was appointed Chair of the 2015 Nominating
Committee, and at its November meeting the Vestry
will appoint other members of the Committee. Per
our by-laws, the Committee is responsible for
presenting the Vestry with a slate of three nominees
to fill the upcoming vacancies of Stephanie Rahe,
Patty Molnar, and Rob Kjoller. The slate will be
presented at the December 11 Vestry Meeting.
Parishioners may also present a name to the
Nominating Committee by preparing a petition
signed by at least three (3) members of the
congregation. The deadline for such a petition is
December 9.
Ministry Fair Sat. & Sun., November 15 & 16
The Vestry invites you to take a stroll around the
ministry tables on November 15th
& 16th
after the
services. As the new season commences – it‟s a
great way to see the more than thirty
ministries active at St. Michael's! It's also a way to
consider using your gifts/skills in a new way - and
to even sign-up and try them out. We'll have lots of
good things to eat as you're visiting each table so
please help the Vestry and Rector make this a
success.
Prayer from a Celtic Psalter by J. Philip Newell
Early in the morning I seek your presence, O God, Not because you are ever absent from me But because often I am absent from you at the heart of each moment where you forever dwell. In the rising of the sun In the unfolding color and shape of the morning open my eyes to the mystery of this moment, That in every moment of the day, I may know your life-giving presence. Open my eyes to this moment That in every moment I may know you as the One who is always now.
Would You Be a Greeter?
I ask that more of you seriously consider
volunteering as a greeter! Although we all need to
greet and welcome visitors and newcomers to St.
Michael's, there is something special about being
greeted at the red door – especially when it's your
first time at a service. Greeters usually do this
ministry in twos – mother-daughter teams, spouse
teams, or two friends as greeters – whatever works
for you. Please take a moment to think about this
ministry and give Christine Steege a call (236-
0573) or email (casailmate@comcast.net) to find
out more. Even one service a year would be very
helpful!
Men‟s Fellowship
Join together in fellowship, discussion
and prayer at 7:30 a.m. on Tuesdays,
October 14th
and 28th
in the Parish
Hall. Light breakfast provided (7:15).

Our UTO is one of the ways in which we are
grateful to God for our many blessings, and are
willing to share our abundance with others. Thank
you for giving of yourselves in this way. Thank
you also to Margery Almas for chairing UTO
again this year. (If you decide to write a check,
please make it out to ECW – St. Michael & All
Angels with a note in the memo “UTO.”)

SPECIAL SEMINAR: The Life and Times of Thomas A.
Madden, Founder of Our Parish
The Rev. Thomas Andrew Madden was the beloved
priest who first arrived on Sanibel Island in 1958 at
the age of 53. He set about at once establishing Saint
Michael’s Mission on the Island, and building, within
a few years, our original church building. The people
of his flock remember him as deeply spiritual and
loving (especially for people and animals in need),
liturgically sensitive, talented in voice and organ
music, frugal, and a man with drive, evangelistic
fervor, and great organizational ability. Who and
what were the major influences in his life that helped
to shape this extraordinary Man of God? How were
his talents and virtues exhibited in the years before he
came to Sanibel? What happened during the ten years
between his retirement from Saint Michael’s and his
death in 1985?
N.B.: Fr. Madden’s ministry as our Founding Vicar
here on Sanibel will be covered in a video (soon to
be made available in a DVD) entitled: Saint
Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church: The
First Three Decades. Therefore, this seminar will
only touch on Fr. Madden’s time at St. Michael’s.
A seminar on the life and times of Thomas A.
Madden will be held on November 25 from 1:00
p.m. to 3:15 p.m., followed by Q&A, in the
Parish Hall. It is open to the Public. (This
seminar will not be repeated, so mark your
calendars!)
Presenters will include: • Dory Rooker, long-time historian of Saint Michael‟s
Church, whose archives and further research
provided key clues and stories as a basis for
research;
• George Farrow, who has performed detailed
research, including face-to-face interviews at the
church and school of Thomas Madden‟s birthplace
of Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He will share
details of Thomas‟ life and times there, as well as
the fascinating story of his transportation to rural
Ontario, Canada at age 18;
• Bill Carr, who has used the Internet, a telephone,
and the US Postal Service to flesh out several
important details of Thomas Madden‟s life in
Ontario, Canada and the United States before he
arrived on Sanibel and after he retired as Vicar of St.
Michael and All Angels Church.

November is
“American Diabetes Month” by Wendy Warner, RN, Parish Nurse
According to healthfinder.gov, “Diabetes is one of
the leading causes of disability and death in the
United States. If it‟s not controlled, diabetes can
cause blindness, nerve damage, kidney disease,”
heart and circulation disorders and other health
problems.
“One in 12 Americans has diabetes – that‟s more
than 25 million people. And another 79 million
adults in the United States are at high risk of
developing type 2 Diabetes.” Type 2 Diabetes is
often times referred to as Adult Onset Diabetes.
If you are overweight, have high blood pressure, or
are age 45 or older, you are at higher risk of
developing type 2 diabetes. The good news is that
you can make changes in those aspects of your life
that you have control. These healthy changes can
greatly lower your risk of developing type 2
Diabetes. Watch your weight, Eat healthy, and Get
More Active are three critical areas you can change
on your own.
There are some factors that may influence your risk
of developing type 2 diabetes that you may not have
control over. Your age is the first. Although many
of us wish we could stop the clock, it keeps on
ticking. Secondly, is our racial/ethnic background.
According to the American Diabetes Association,
“Mexican Americans, American Indians, Native
Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders and Asian Americans
have a higher risk” of developing type 2 diabetes.
Another factor that you do not have control over is
your family history. This information is good for
you to know, but also for your children and
grandchildren to know. Lastly, gender does not
directly play a part in the development of type 2
diabetes, but if diagnosed it affects “how likely you
are to develop heart disease. Men are more likely to
develop heart disease. But once a woman reaches
menopause, her risk for heart disease goes up. But
even then, women still aren't as likely as men.”
To find out more information on Diabetes, check
the American Diabetes Association web site. For
November, there will be a Parish Nurse Board that
will talk about diabetes and diabetes handouts will
be available on the table below.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry “Shawls . . . made for centuries,
universal and embracing,
symbolic of an inclusive
unconditionally loving God.
They wrap, enfold, comfort,
cover, give solace, mother, hug, shelter and
beautify. Those who have received these shawls
have been uplifted and affirmed....” Janet Bristow,
1998, co-founder, with Victoria Galo, of the Prayer
Shawl Ministry.
In January of 2008, we began our Prayer Shawl
Ministry here at St. Michael‟s. These prayer shawls,
all unique, have been knitted or quilted with love and
care by members of our group. Sometimes we start
making a prayer shawl for an unknown recipient and
then realize we know exactly who should receive it.
Part of the journey of prayer and faith is to recognize
we may never know how our love and caring will
touch or change another person‟s life. Instead we are
invited to offer others our compassion and let
whatever needs to happen, happen. When the shawl
is completed, it is blessed at a service by Ellen before
being sent along its way.
Our mission is to reach out to parishioners who are
in need of comfort while going through a difficult
time such as an illness, surgery, a loss or
bereavement. We also knit for someone getting
married or for a baby being baptized. The
possibilities are endless! It is our prayer that the
recipients of these shawls and quilts will feel God‟s
love and comfort as well as our love and concern.
We welcome all knitters and quilters, as well as
those who want to learn, to join this ministry.
Please contact June Ingraham at 481-1990 or
Mary Ann Loh at 395-0041. If you know of
someone who you feel would benefit from receiving
a prayer shawl, please call Wendy or Susan at 472-
2173.

Saturday, December 13, 2014 – 11:00 a.m.

Baptism If I could tell you what this meant,
this threefold phrase, this fluid touch,
this moment sanctified by promise,
you in your [childhood] distraction
would certainly dismiss it,
and I, the priest who dried your head
then lit a candle for remembrance,
might realize again some things are taught
but others are best lived and learned
as is most discernment.
Still, something happened on this day
of such great simplicity,
it might pass by unrecognized.
Clearly there was not birth and death
with human severance and pain.
But portals opened that are unseen
and forces moved to befriend your soul.
You were enrolled into God.
This may seem a small thing
in the surety of youth
but trust as those who brought you here:
There is nothing more.

beautifying St. Michael‟s this past summer.
Considerable discussion ensued about the urgent
problems with the office building. The age of the
building, location over a poor drainage field,
probable mold issues in the Rector‟s office led to
the Vestry approving Hyde to speak to the architect
about a new office building vs. temporary
“bandaiding” repairs of the current one.
Finance Committee: Bob Winters reminded the
Vestry of the Special Projects Fund, and asked the
Vestry to let him know of any projects (property or
non-property) for 2015. Ellen mentioned the
ongoing work of the History and Archives
Committee.
The Rector reported on the health of various
parishioners. There were two weddings this
summer, two boys will be baptized in early
November, and fifty-four adults and children
attended the Youth party at the Sloans‟ house this
summer. She announced that Meghan Warner had
enthusiastically started as Youth Leader.
Ministry Updates: Stephanie Rahe (ECW) reported
that the Noah‟s Ark pre-sale following the Saturday
and Sunday services was a great success. All the
women of St. Michael‟s are being encouraged to
become part of ECW. Joanne Syversen (Pastoral
Care) reported that meetings had just started, and
they were welcoming Wendy Warner as the new
Parish Nurse. Roberta Winters (Parish Life Co-
Chair) said she and Pat Jones had two coordinators
for each service in charge of getting volunteers
lined up for receptions.
The next Vestry meeting is November 13, 2014.
Treasurer's Quarterly Report At the end of the third quarter, income for the year
totals $621,319.11 and adjusted expenses for the
year total $547,176.67. This positive position is a
result of all income categories being on, or above,
budget, together with good expense management.
Contributions are well ahead of budget and are
expected to continue that way for the balance of the
year.
Reports regarding contributions for the first nine
months of 2014 were mailed on October 16th
. Those
who made pledges for this year can see their
remaining balance. Approximately 30% of the
amount pledged for 2014 is expected to be paid in
the fourth quarter.
Budget planning for 2015 is underway and input is
being received from many sources. Our annual
review of the draft budget will be presented to
interested parishioners on December 4th
at 2:30 p.m.
in the Parish Hall. Vestry approval of the 2015
budget is scheduled for the December Vestry
meeting. It will then be presented at the Annual
Meeting on February 22nd
for Parish acceptance.
St. Michael's is in good financial condition at this
time. Income for the fourth quarter is expected to
continue well ahead of plan. The outlook for a
successful year remains strong.
