3. Previous Event
The first event for 2018/19 was held in The Recital Room at Bootham
School. We were grateful to our member James Ratcliffe for giving a
presentation on “The Maths of Music”. The presentation was accessible and
provided the right balance the mathematical and musical elements as well
as being very well illustrated by musical examples. The presentation
covered the ways in which mathematics can be seen in the sound and
structure of music and included both aural and notated examples to
demonstrate the points made. The presentation began with Pythagoras and
covered Pythagorean tuning and we were given the opportunity to hear via
computer generated sounds the difference between the Pythagorean scale
and the modern scale. The presentation also looked at how the
mathematical principles of transformation (translation, rotation, reflection
and enlargement) can be seen when looking at the underlying structure of
music. One of the illustrated examples was John Tavener’s composition
“The Lamb” with us being able to see and hear how the principles of
transformation appeared in the structure of the piece. It was noted that
Taverner only went so far and was willing to diverge from the structure and
make alterations which made more musical sense. The final part of the
presentation looked at the relationship between fractals and fugue and we
were able to conclude by hearing a computer-generated fugue which was
created through algorithms. It was noted that mathematically generated
music can only go so far, and a composer’s musical input is needed.
We were grateful to both James and Bootham School for the effort put into
hosting the event and supplying refreshments.

4. Next Event
The December meeting will have a social feel and will be held at Priory
Street , United Reform Church in York. We are grateful to Nigel Holdsworth
for facilitating use of the venue and for providing hospitality. We are also
pleased that John Scott Whiteley will be playing the organ for the event.
Members will have the chance to sing carols and enjoy seasonal
refreshments. It is hoped that as many people as possible can attend what
looks to be an enjoyable event. The event will begin at 14.00.
Please also note that the series of Saturday lunchtime recitals at Priory
Street commence in January. A full page poster with full details appears in
the upcoming recitals section. It is hoped as many as possible will support
the series.
St. Columba's York, United Reformed Church is located at 32 Priory Street, YO1 6EX.Priory Street is a turning off Micklegate, first on the right after entering the walled city through Micklegate Bar. Alternatively, if you are coming up Micklegate from the direction of the river, turn left just after passing Holy Trinity Church.
5.Organists Review
6. Invitation
Invitation from David Thornton of the Preston & District Organists
Association.
For many years I have been involved with taking small groups of organists to
play instruments in France and latterly Germany. Provisional dates for next
year’s trip are Sunday 8th September to Saturday 14th. We will be visiting
the area around Alkmaar and Haarlem, with playing time already arranged
for the F. C. Schnitger organ at the Laurenkerk Alkmaar and the C. Müller
organ at the Bavokerk Haarlem. We will also be visiting several other historic
organs around the region. We usually book 2 hours playing time on each
organ, I intend to take 8 players and at present have a few places available. If
you are interested please contact me, David Thornton at
thornton643@btinternet.com for further details.
7.Churches of North Wales Part 2
St Margaret’s Church, Bodelwyddan is visible for many miles due to is spire of 202 feet and can readily
be seen by people travelling along the A55 trunk road which runs from Cheshire to the Welsh coast.
The church is in a decorated gothic style and was erected by Lady Margaret Willoughby de Broke
(daughter of Sir John Williams of nearby Bodelwyddan Castle ) in memory of her husband,
Henry Peyto-Verney, 16th Baron Willoughby de Broke. Designed by John Gibson and built at
a costs of £60,000 the church was consecrated by the Bishop of St Asaph on 23rd
August
1860.
The church contains fourteen types of marble. The types of marble include Belgian red marble which
is used for some of the pillars and Anglesey marble used for the nave entrance. The church also
contains elaborate woodwork and within the tower can be found stained glass windows on the north
and south sides which feature St Margaret and St Kentigern.
Up to the late 20th century the church was very distinctive due to it being so white but inevitably over
time pollution has resulted in the colour becoming more grey making it look like most other stone
buildings.
To the west of the church is Kimnel camp which was a military camp used by Canadian soldiers in
World War One. The churchyard contains the graves of a number of victims of the Spanish Flu
epidemic which occurred in the camp in 1918-9. In addition there are graves of four of five Canadian
soldiers who were killed in a riot which occurred in the camp in 1919 which was a result of a ship
which was allocated to return troops to Canada being diverted to take food supplies to Russia. In total
there are 112 Commonwealth service personnel commemorated from World War One.
Unfortunately the church layout has meant that there has been a lack of space for there to be an
organ which is worthy of the buildings magnificent surroundings. In 2017 a two manual digital organ
was installed. Prior to this there was a pipe organ approximately 50 years old which was in need of
restoration. I understand that the organ was of two manuals but I have been unable to find any
further information. The digital organ was built by Allen Organs with the opening recital being given
by the organist and composer John Hosking until recently Assistant Director of Music at St Asaph
Cathedral and previously holding posts at Lincoln Cathedral and Westminster Abbey John was joined
by the soprano Olivia Hunt. John Hosking wrote in the local press that “although nothing beats a pipe
organ in my opinion, the new digital installation by Allen sounds fabulous and was definitely the right
choice for the church. Although the instrument only has two manuals and 33 stops , there is a range of
200 additional voices to choose from , which makes the organ extremely versatile indeed”.
I would be interested to hear if anyone has any information on the previous pipe organs in the church.
