THE TRANSPORTATION

OF WINEOVER LONG DISTANCES

The challenges, of transporting wine harmlessly are as old as the wine history is.

The Neumagen Wine Ship – about 2,000 years old

Dolia

These amazing clay containers have been used to store and transport wine in the Western Mediterranean.

In 17th century, Britain started importing wine from Portugal. But the wine couldn’t survive the long journey back to Britain.

In ancient times, there were very limited resources for carrying wine. And there was nothing to control temperature effectively.

Barrels have always been used for storage and transportation of wine and, are very useful in maintaining the temperature to a great extant.

The wine carriers always have challenges in making sure, the wine isn’t exposed to any heat or temperature.

Humidity is another factor that the transporters have to control. The humidity should remain between 50 and 80 % in transit.

The transporters prevent excessive shaking during the transportation of wine.

After each delivery, the carrier tanks need standard cleaning before filling it again with wine.

I can also enjoy wine like humans do……….CHEERS !

There are certain microbiological tests that need to be performed on wine after loading and before unloading it from carrier tanks.

Wine is very precious. As it takes a lot of efforts, time and skills to make a good wine. It’s true that most of the wines deteriorate during its transportation. Hence, transportation becomes an extremely critical part of A Good Wine.

A Good Wine

Cheers !!!!
